Microcharacidium geryi is a tiny darter characin from the Ucayali River basin of Peru, a fish that spends its life perched on or near the bottom rather than swimming in open water, darting a short distance to snap up a passing insect larva or micro-crustacean and then settling back onto a leaf, root or patch of sand. At a maximum recorded size of just 1 in standard length, it is one of the smallest members of the Crenuchidae, the family that also contains the much better-known sailfin characins of the genus Crenuchus. It rarely appears in the aquarium trade and almost never under its own name, but for keepers of small, quiet, well-planted nano tanks it is a genuinely interesting alternative to the usual tetra roster: a true bottom-perching darter rather than a mid-water shoaler, with a micro-predator's diet and habits that reward close observation over spectacle.

Taxonomy & naming

Microcharacidium geryi was described by the German ichthyologist Axel Zarske in 1997, in the same paper that established the genus Microcharacidium itself along with a second new genus, Geryichthys (for the species G. sterbai), both erected for small darter characins collected from the Ucayali River drainage in Peru. The description was published in Zoologische Abhandlungen (Dresden) under the title "Geryichthys sterbai gen. et spec. nov. und Microcharacidium geryi spec. nov.: Beschreibung einer neuen Gattung und zweier neuer Arten von Bodensalmlern aus dem Einzugsgebiet des Rio Ucayali in Peru" — roughly, a description of a new genus and two new species of "bottom salmonids" (darter characins) from the Ucayali catchment.

Microcharacidium geryi sits in the subfamily Characidiinae within the family Crenuchidae, the darter and sailfin characins, a Characiformes lineage split between open-water, gentle nano species like Crenuchus spilurus and the strictly bottom-dwelling darters such as Characidium and Microcharacidium. Subsequent taxonomic review by Buckup (2003) treated M. geryi as incertae sedis within Crenuchidae, meaning its exact placement relative to other darter genera has been flagged as unsettled rather than firmly resolved; this article follows the currently accepted genus, Microcharacidium, as used by FishBase and GBIF.

Morphology

Microcharacidium geryi is minute even by darter-characin standards, reaching a maximum recorded length of only 1 in standard length, which places it among the smallest described Crenuchidae. Like other darters in the Characidiinae, it has an elongated, slightly compressed body built for short bursts of movement over the substrate rather than sustained swimming, with the paired fins — particularly the pectorals — positioned and shaped to let the fish prop itself against wood, leaf litter or sand between darts.

Detailed colouration and fin-ray counts for this species are not well documented in the available literature, which is typical for a poorly known micro-species from a single river basin; keepers and researchers should expect the muted, cryptic patterning typical of benthic darter characins rather than the bright, flag-like fins of the sailfin characins in the same family.

Habitat

Microcharacidium geryi is known only from the Ucayali River basin in Peru, one of the principal headwater systems of the Amazon. It is recorded as a benthopelagic freshwater species, meaning it lives close to the bottom in the lower part of the water column rather than roaming mid-water, consistent with its darter lifestyle of perching and short dashes rather than continuous swimming.

Water parameters specific to this species have not been directly measured in the sources available, but the wider Characidiinae subfamily to which it belongs is documented from soft, acidic-to-neutral, cool-to-warm streams — broadly pH 5.5–7.5, general hardness 5–25° GH and temperatures of 64–81 °F — and the Ucayali drainage itself carries the soft, tannin-influenced water typical of much of the western Amazon. Given the genus's small size and benthic habits, leaf litter, fine sediment and submerged wood are almost certainly important structural features of its natural habitat, as they are for related darters.

Feeding

As a member of the Characidiinae, Microcharacidium geryi is a micro-predator rather than a grazer or generalist scavenger: darter characins feed by watching from a perch and darting out to seize small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, micro-crustaceans and similar tiny prey — picked from the substrate or water column immediately around them. This sit-and-dart foraging style is the behavioural signature of the group and the reason for the common name "darter."

In the aquarium, darter characins of this size typically ignore dry flake food and need to be offered live or frozen foods sized to a 1 in fish — microworm, baby brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), Cyclops and other small live or frozen invertebrates — fed in a way that lets the fish forage naturally along the bottom rather than compete at the surface.

Mating

No courtship or pairing behaviour specific to Microcharacidium geryi has been documented in the sources consulted. Within the Crenuchidae more broadly, the sailfin characins (Crenuchus, Poecilocharax) are known for a distinctive cave- or leaf-spawning courtship in which a male displays to and guides a female to a chosen surface, and it is plausible that the true darters (Characidium, Microcharacidium) follow a broadly similar pattern given their shared subfamily, but this has not been confirmed for M. geryi specifically and should not be assumed as established fact for this species.

Breeding

Breeding of Microcharacidium geryi has not been documented in the available literature, and the species is essentially unreported in aquarium spawning accounts — unsurprising for a micro-species known from a single Peruvian river basin that rarely if ever reaches the hobby. Within Crenuchidae generally, the sailfin characins (Crenuchus spilurus, Poecilocharax species) are cave or leaf spawners in which the male provides brief guarding care of a small clutch, a genuinely breedable pattern at nano scale that has been reproduced by hobbyists; true darters in the genus Characidium, by contrast, are reported to scatter eggs over the substrate with no parental care.

Where M. geryi falls between these two patterns is not established from current sources, so this account does not assign it a confirmed breeding mode. Given the total absence of hobby breeding reports, a prospective keeper should treat this species as effectively unbred in captivity rather than expect to replicate a known protocol.

In the aquarium

Microcharacidium geryi is a true nano fish: at a maximum of 1 in, it is comfortable in small, quiet aquariums that would be far too small for almost any other characin, but its needs are specific. As a bottom-perching micro-predator it does poorly on flake alone and needs small live or frozen foods offered where it forages, and as a shy, poorly known species from soft, structurally complex water it benefits from a tank with fine leaf litter, driftwood and dim lighting rather than open, brightly lit space.

Because it is essentially unavailable in the aquarium trade and undocumented in hobbyist care literature, anyone encountering this species — most likely as an unidentified "darter tetra" import from Peru — should treat it with the same caution given to any freshly imported micro-species: quarantine carefully, avoid boisterous or much larger tankmates that could see it as food, and expect to learn its care requirements largely by observation rather than by following an established hobby protocol.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Microcharacidium geryi as Least Concern. This reflects the absence of documented major threats to the species within its known Ucayali basin range rather than an assessment based on abundant population data; like many small, single-basin Amazonian characins, it is not a target of commercial fishing or the aquarium trade at any meaningful scale, and habitat pressures across the wider Ucayali drainage — deforestation, sedimentation and water-quality change associated with development in the Peruvian Amazon — are the most relevant long-term watch items even though the species itself is not currently considered threatened.
