Nannocharax fasciatus was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1867, with a type locality in Gabon. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae — the African characins that also include the much larger, plant-grazing Distichodus — within the order Characiformes, and to the genus Nannocharax, a group of small, elongate, bottom-associated species distinguished from their bigger relatives by their diminutive size and specialised, fin-assisted perching posture.

Morphology
