Taxonomy & naming
Nannocharax brevis was described by the Belgian-based ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1902, one of dozens of small Congo basin characins he named during his prolific survey work on Central African fishes. It sits in the genus Nannocharax, a large assemblage of small, elongate, bottom-oriented characins within the family Distichodontidae — the same family that contains the much larger, herbivorous Distichodus, though the two genera could scarcely look or behave more differently.
The genus name Nannocharax itself signals the split from its bigger relatives: "nanno-" (dwarf) attached to "charax," the classical root shared across many characin genera. The species epithet brevis is Latin for "short," a fitting descriptor for a fish whose adult length tops out around 2 in. As with many small, geographically restricted Nannocharax species, N. brevis is not a fish most hobbyists will have encountered outside specialist African-biotope circles, and taxonomic literature on the genus remains sparse relative to its species count.
Morphology
Nannocharax brevis is a small, slender, torpedo-shaped characin reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2 in total length — a genuine dwarf even by the standards of its own dwarf-heavy genus, and nothing like the deep-bodied grazing Distichodus that share its family. The body is built low and elongate, an adaptation shared across stream-dwelling Nannocharax species for holding position and darting along the bottom in current rather than cruising open water.
Detailed colour-pattern and fin-ray data for this species were not available in the sources consulted here; as with several small Nannocharax, published descriptions focus more on meristic counts and type-locality detail than on live colouration, so keepers should expect the understated, camouflage-toned patterning typical of small rheophilic (current-loving) African characins rather than dramatic finnage or colour.
Habitat
Nannocharax brevis is endemic to the Congo basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it inhabits swiftly flowing sections of river with rocky substrates and marginal vegetation. This is a fish of current, not still water — it favours stretches with strong flow and correspondingly high dissolved oxygen, a habitat preference that shapes almost everything about how it needs to be kept in the aquarium.
Water in this setting runs warm and is neither the extreme soft blackwater of some Congo tributaries nor hard and alkaline; source data places a comfortable range around 73–81 °F with pH roughly 6.0–7.5. Frequent water movement and turnover in the wild habitat translate directly into a captive requirement for strong flow and clean, well-oxygenated water rather than the sluggish, tannin-stained conditions sometimes assumed for Congo basin fish generally.
Feeding
Nannocharax brevis feeds on small benthic invertebrates, foraging along the substrate in the swift water it inhabits rather than picking food from the water column or grazing on plant material the way its larger Distichodus relatives do. In the aquarium it strongly favours live and frozen foods — bloodworm and Daphnia are specifically noted as preferred — over dried flake or pellet, and keepers should expect to feed a live/frozen-heavy diet rather than relying on prepared foods alone.
Because it hovers and hops along the bottom to feed, food needs to reach the substrate where this species forages; fast-swimming or midwater tankmates can out-compete it for food offered only at the surface or in open water.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for Nannocharax brevis in the sources available here. Small rheophilic Nannocharax and their Distichodontidae relatives are generally presumed to be egg-scattering characins with no pair bond or nest-building behaviour, consistent with the wider pattern in the family, but this has not been specifically confirmed for this species and no external sexual dimorphism has been reported.
Breeding
Breeding has not yet been achieved in the aquarium hobby for Nannocharax brevis. This is consistent with the wider pattern among small African Distichodontidae, where Distichodus and the citharinids are likewise egg-scatterers that are rarely if ever bred at home — the specialised flow, oxygenation and probably seasonal cues these fish require in the wild have so far not been successfully replicated in captivity. No spawning mode, egg type or parental-care behaviour can honestly be reported for this species; anyone encountering fry-like behaviour or a spawning event with this species would be documenting something genuinely new to the hobby.
In the aquarium
Nannocharax brevis is a specialist stream fish, not a casual community characin, and its aquarium requirements follow directly from its Congo rapids habitat. It needs fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water — strong filtration output and/or a powerhead creating real current — plus frequent water changes to keep water quality high, mirroring the constantly renewed water of its natural rocky river margins. A stable, well-established tank with a fine gravel or sand-and-rock substrate suits its bottom-hugging, hopping locomotion far better than a heavily planted, still-water setup, though marginal vegetation and cover are appreciated.
Behaviourally it is inquisitive and active but can be somewhat territorial toward its own kind and similar bottom-dwellers, while remaining peaceful within a well-planted community of appropriately sized fish. Suggested tankmates include other African rheophilic species such as Garra and Steatocranus, South American characins accustomed to similar current, danionins, hillstream loaches and smaller Loricariid catfish — all fish adapted to moving water rather than the still, densely planted tanks often set up for typical community characins. Given its tiny adult size, it should never be housed with anything large enough to see it as food.
Conservation
Nannocharax brevis is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. As a Congo basin endemic restricted to a specific type of flowing-water habitat, its conservation status nonetheless bears watching alongside the broader pressures facing Congo basin rivers — including sedimentation, deforestation and any future hydrological development — even though the species is not currently considered threatened. It is not a significant presence in the aquarium trade, and no data on collection pressure or trade volume was found in the sources consulted here.
