Nannocharax fasciolaris was described by John Treadwell Nichols and Rudyerd Boulton in 1927, placing it in the small African genus Nannocharax within the family Distichodontidae — the African characin family that also holds the much larger, plant-grazing Distichodus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it treats Nannocharax fasciolaris as a currently accepted species rather than a synonym.
Nannocharax is a distinctive genus within Distichodontidae: unlike its bulkier relatives, its members are small, slender, bottom-oriented fish with a characteristic banded or striped pattern (fasciolaris itself references fine bands or stripes) and a body plan suited to hugging the substrate rather than cruising mid-water. The genus sits well apart from the pacu and silver-dollar lineages of South American Serrasalmidae that dominate the popular image of characins, and it is a useful reminder that Characiformes spans everything from nano invertebrate-pickers to metre-long river giants.
Morphology
This is a genuinely tiny fish: FishBase records a maximum size of just 1.5 in total length, making it one of the smallest characins in the African fauna. The body shape typical of Nannocharax — elongate, subcylindrical and somewhat flattened along the belly — suits a fish that spends most of its time in close contact with the substrate rather than swimming freely in the water column.
Detailed published descriptions of colour pattern and fin structure beyond the original 1927 species account are sparse, and no separate account of external sexual differences exists in the sources reviewed here; data on this species is genuinely limited, and it is more accurate to say so than to extrapolate confidently from better-known congeners.
Habitat
Nannocharax fasciolaris is known only from its type locality at Capelongo, Angola, and available distribution data does not extend the species beyond that single site. This makes it a narrow-range endemic in the strict sense — a species whose entire documented occurrence is one place in the upper reaches of Angola's river systems.
No detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species was found in the sources reviewed; broader Nannocharax accounts describe the genus as inhabiting benthic zones of streams and rivers where individuals forage over stone, gravel and leaf-litter substrates. Given the narrow, single-locality record, any water-parameter figures for this species specifically should be treated as unconfirmed rather than assumed from the wider genus.
Feeding
In the wild, Nannocharax fasciolaris is a benthic invertebrate feeder, picking small aquatic invertebrates from the substrate rather than grazing plant material or hunting other fish — a diet consistent with its diminutive size and bottom-oriented habits. This sets it apart sharply from the plant-shredding Distichodus and the detritus-grazing citharinids that share its family.
In aquarium accounts of the genus, Nannocharax species are reported to strongly prefer small live or frozen foods — bloodworm and Daphnia are specifically noted — over dry flake or pellet food, and feeding success in captivity depends on offering foods sized and presented for a fish that forages along the bottom rather than in open water.
Mating
No courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for Nannocharax fasciolaris in the sources available here. Data on reproductive behaviour in this genus generally is thin, and nothing specific to this species — sexual dimorphism, courtship display or spawning triggers — could be confirmed. It is more honest to report that gap than to borrow behaviour from a better-studied relative.
Breeding
Nannocharax fasciolaris has no documented aquarium breeding record. Like most Distichodontidae, African characins in this family are egg-scatterers with no parental care, but that is a family-level generalisation, not a confirmed observation for this species — no spawning account, egg description or fry-rearing report for N. fasciolaris turned up in the sources reviewed.
A related species, N. fasciatus, has occasionally been bred in the hobby, but that success has not been reported for N. fasciolaris itself. Given the species' extremely restricted known range and its Data Deficient status, it is essentially unknown to captive breeding, and any keeper attempting it would be working without an established protocol.

At a maximum of 1.5 in, Nannocharax fasciolaris is a true nano fish, and if it appears in the trade at all it is a rarity rather than a staple. Aquarium accounts of the genus recommend a densely planted tank furnished with driftwood and smooth pebbles to give this bottom-dwelling, inquisitive fish the cover and foraging texture it uses in nature; open, bare tanks do not suit its natural hovering-and-hopping movement over the substrate.
Feeding is the main husbandry challenge: this is a fish that wants small live or frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, Daphnia and similar) rather than flake, and it may struggle to compete for food against faster, more established tankmates. Given its extremely small size and specialist needs, it is best suited to a dedicated nano or species-only setup rather than a general community tank, and given how rarely it is available and how little is documented about its husbandry, prospective keepers should treat it as an advanced-hobbyist proposition rather than a beginner nano fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Nannocharax fasciolaris as Data Deficient, an assessment dated 1 March 2007. This reflects a genuine absence of population, threat and trend data rather than any evidence that the species is secure — with the entire known record confined to a single locality at Capelongo, Angola, there simply has not been enough recent fieldwork to support a more definitive category.
A species known from only one site is inherently vulnerable to any localised habitat change — water abstraction, siltation or degradation of that one stream system could affect the entire known population — but no specific threat assessment has been published. Renewed survey work in the Capelongo area would be needed to determine whether the species persists and in what numbers, and until then Data Deficient remains the honest, evidence-based classification.
