Nannocharax hadros is a banded, bottom-hugging little characin described in 2021 from the Luapula River basin in the Upper Congo system, and it holds the distinction of being the largest species in its genus — a genus otherwise built of small, elongate, algae-grazing fish that cling to rocky riverbeds in fast African currents. Its species name, hadros, is Greek for "well-developed" or "bulky", a fitting label for a fish that still tops out under 3 in. Like most Nannocharax, it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and barely documented outside its original description and a FishBase summary, so this account is necessarily brief and leans on what has actually been published rather than on hobby lore that does not yet exist for this species.

Taxonomy & naming

Nannocharax hadros was described in 2021 by Auguy Manda, Jos Snoeks, and colleagues (including Manda and Emmanuel Vreven) as a new species of "banded Nannocharax" from the Luapula River basin in Zambia, part of the Upper Congo drainage. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae within the order Citharniformes (the citharinoid characins), a largely African lineage that also includes the much larger, plant-shredding Distichodus and the deep-bodied, algae-grazing Citharinus.

The genus Nannocharax comprises small, slender-to-moderately built riffle-dwelling characins found across tropical Africa, most of which stay well under 4 in. FishBase notes that N. hadros is in fact the largest species so far described in the genus, at a maximum of 3 in standard length — still a genuinely small fish, but large by Nannocharax standards. The original description distinguishes N. hadros from its close relative N. procatopus using several diagnostic characters, including pectoral-fin ray count, body depth at the origin of the anal fin, and the distance between the nostrils (internostril distance). The specific epithet hadros is Greek for "well-developed", "strong" or "bulky", referring directly to the species' comparatively large size within its genus.

Morphology

Nannocharax hadros reaches a maximum recorded length of 3 in standard length, making it a small fish in absolute terms but the largest known member of its genus. Like other banded Nannocharax, it has an elongate, torpedo-shaped body suited to holding position against current, and FishBase records a completely pored lateral line running the length of the body — a trait shared with some but not all of its relatives, and used alongside other characters to separate it from similar species.

A distinctive field mark noted in the original description and FishBase summary is bright red lips in life, a contrast against the fish's banded body pattern. Unlike some congeners, N. hadros lacks a black spot on the adipose fin, a useful character for distinguishing it from superficially similar Nannocharax species sharing its range. Detailed colour-pattern and fin-count data beyond these points have not been compiled into accessible secondary sources at the time of writing.

Habitat

The type locality for Nannocharax hadros is the Kalule Nord River, a tributary of the upper Lualaba River — itself the headwater stretch of the Congo River — within the Upper Congo basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, close to the Luapula basin material described in the same paper. FishBase characterises the habitat as shallow, rocky river reaches with high current, consistent with the riffle- and rapid-dwelling ecology typical of banded Nannocharax generally, which use their body shape to hold station on stony substrate in fast-flowing water rather than swim in open, slow water.

FishBase gives a water temperature range of roughly 64–82 °F and a pH range of 7.0–8.4 for the species, indicating cooler, more neutral-to-alkaline conditions than the warm, soft blackwater typically associated with Congo basin fish more broadly — consistent with upland, well-oxygenated, swift-flowing headwater streams rather than lowland swamp or floodplain habitat. Data on seasonal variation, exact depth range and substrate composition beyond "rocky" have not been published in sources available for this account.

Feeding

No species-specific diet study has been published for Nannocharax hadros in the sources available for this account. Other Nannocharax species are generally understood to graze algae and biofilm, and to pick at aufwuchs and small invertebrates from rock and gravel surfaces in fast-flowing water, consistent with their small mouths, riffle-dwelling habits and body form built for holding position rather than open-water hunting. Given the close relationship to and shared habitat with these congeners, a broadly similar grazing/omnivorous diet is plausible for N. hadros, but this has not been confirmed for the species itself and should be treated as inference rather than documented fact.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Nannocharax hadros in any source available for this account. The species was described only in 2021 from a limited number of specimens, and no aquarium or field breeding observations appear to have been published. Data sparse.

Breeding

There is no published record of Nannocharax hadros being bred in the aquarium, and no field data on its reproductive biology. Like the great majority of small African riffle-dwelling characins in the family Distichodontidae, related Nannocharax species are understood as egg-scatterers with no parental care, but this has not been specifically documented for N. hadros, and the species is not established in the aquarium hobby. Given the total absence of trade or hobby history for this recently described species, no honest breeding account can be offered beyond noting that it has not been bred in captivity as far as published sources show.

In the aquarium

Nannocharax hadros is not established in the aquarium trade; there are no hobbyist care reports, and it appears to be known only from the scientific literature and FishBase at the time of writing. Its habitat data — shallow, rocky, high-current river reaches at 64–82 °F and pH 7.0–8.4 — point to the general requirements a keeper would need to replicate if the species were ever collected for the trade: strong water flow, well-oxygenated water, a rocky or gravel substrate, and cooler, more neutral-to-alkaline water than is typical for many Congo basin aquarium fish. At a maximum size of 3 in SL it would suit a modest streamlined-current setup rather than a large predator tank.

FishBase rates the species as having low vulnerability to fishing pressure and as harmless to humans. Given the complete lack of documented aquarium history, any care advice beyond matching its known wild habitat parameters would be speculation rather than fact, and is deliberately omitted here.

Conservation

Nannocharax hadros has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and currently carries no status; it is treated here as Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2021 from a restricted area of the Upper Congo/Luapula basin — recently described, range-limited fish routinely await a full Red List assessment for years after publication.

No specific threats to the species have been documented in available sources. As with other narrow-range Upper Congo and Luapula basin fish, plausible long-term watch items would include habitat change, water-quality pressure and any mining or land-use change affecting headwater tributaries in the region, but none of this is confirmed for N. hadros specifically, and this account does not assert threats beyond what has actually been published.
