Taxonomy & naming
Nannocharax luapulae was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1915, with a type locality at the Luapula River at Kasenga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It sits in the genus Nannocharax within the family Distichodontidae — the African characin family that also contains the much larger, plant-grazing Distichodus and the deep-bodied, algae-scraping citharinids — inside the order Characiformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid combination, and it remains Nannocharax luapulae.
For decades the species was treated as fairly widespread across the southern Upper Congo system, but a 2023 revision published in the Journal of Fish Biology (Katemo Manda et al.) re-examined the type series and additional material and found that true N. luapulae is restricted to the Luapula-Moero basin straddling the Zambia-DRC border. Populations from further up the Lualaba that had previously been referred to N. luapulae were shown to represent a distinct, closely related species pair and were described as new: Nannocharax chochamandai. That split is the most important taxonomic fact about this species — any older literature describing N. luapulae as broadly distributed across the Upper Congo should be read with the narrower, revised range in mind.
Morphology
