Nannocharax maculicauda was described by Richard P. Vari and Jacques Géry in 1981, part of a broader revision of the small, elongate African characins placed in Nannocharax. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae — the African characin family that also contains the much larger, plant-shredding Distichodus and the deep-bodied, algae-grazing Citharinus — within the order Characiformes.
Nannocharax is a genus of around 30 described species, all African endemics, and N. maculicauda is among the smallest of them. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid combination; nothing in the available record suggests the species has been moved out of Nannocharax since its description, and this article keeps that genus assignment throughout.
Morphology
Nannocharax maculicauda is a genuinely tiny fish: the original description gives a range of roughly 1 in standard length, with a maximum recorded specimen of about 1 in SL — in practical terms, an adult runs about 1 in. It shares the elongate, slightly compressed body form typical of small Nannocharax species, built for holding position and darting among cover rather than for open-water cruising.
The species name maculicauda ("spotted tail") points to its most distinctive field mark: a dark spot or blotch on the caudal peduncle, a pattern shared with several small Nannocharax species and useful for distinguishing it from close congeners in the field. Beyond that peduncle spot, detailed colour and fin-ray counts are documented in the original taxonomic description rather than in accessible aquarium literature, and this account does not extend beyond what that source establishes.
Habitat
Nannocharax maculicauda is known from tributary streams of the northwestern Congo River basin in Gabon. As with many small, single-country Distichodontidae, the documented range is narrow, and the available sources do not describe the species' habitat in the level of detail available for wider-ranging African characins.
Broadly, small-bodied Nannocharax species occupy shallow, well-oxygenated forest streams typical of the Congo basin — warm water over sand, leaf litter and submerged wood, often overhung by riparian vegetation. Specific temperature, pH and hardness data for N. maculicauda itself is not available in the cache; keepers and researchers should treat any numbers as inferred from the wider genus rather than measured at this species' type locality, and this article does not invent precise figures it cannot source.
Feeding

Nannocharax maculicauda is not established in the aquarium trade. It does not appear in mainstream hobbyist care literature, and the only usable comparison is the related N. brevis, which has occasionally been kept in small setups around 45×30×12 in — modest tanks suited to a fish this size. If a keeper were ever to encounter true N. maculicauda, that scale of housing, soft leaf-litter substrate, gentle flow and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods would be the reasonable starting point based on genus behaviour, not species-specific experience.
Because it is essentially unknown in captivity, there is no tested word on tankmates, group size or long-term husbandry for this exact species. Anyone acquiring fish sold under this name should independently verify identification, since misidentification is common among small, rarely traded Nannocharax species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Nannocharax maculicauda as Least Concern. This reflects the absence of documented specific threats to the species within its known Gabonese range rather than dense population data — a pattern common to small, narrow-range Central African stream fish that have not been targeted by fisheries or heavily impacted by development in the areas they are known from.
Because the species has essentially no footprint in the aquarium trade, wild collection pressure is not a relevant conservation factor here. The more general watch items for Gabon's Congo-basin tributary streams — deforestation, artisanal mining and associated sedimentation — are broadly relevant to the region's small endemic fish fauna, though no source in hand ties a specific pressure to this species.
