Taxonomy & naming
Nannocharax minutus was described by the British ichthyologist Edgar Barton Worthington in 1933. It belongs to the genus Nannocharax, a large group of small, often bottom-associated African characins placed in the family Distichodontidae — the same family that contains the much larger, plant-grazing Distichodus species. The genus name Nannocharax itself signals the group's general habit: "nanno-" (dwarf) plus "charax", a characin genus name, i.e. "dwarf characin", and this species carries that theme further with the specific epithet minutus, Latin for "very small" or "minute".
Nannocharax is a taxonomically active genus with dozens of small, similar-looking species distributed across African river systems, and identification within the genus rests on fine details of scale counts, fin-ray counts and colour pattern that are not resolved by common names alone.
