Taxonomy & naming
Nannocharax monardi was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1936, placing it in the genus Nannocharax within the family Distichodontidae, order Citharinformes (the African characins historically grouped with Citharinidae under the older order Characiformes sensu lato). The species is known only from its syntype series, collected in the Cubango River — the upper Okavango system — and the Kunene River, both in the Angola–Namibia border region of southern Africa.
The genus name Nannocharax combines the Greek nannos ("dwarf") with charax, the root shared across many characin genera, reflecting the small, slender-bodied build typical of the group; the genus currently holds several dozen species distributed across African river systems from the Nile basin to the Zambezi and Okavango. The species epithet monardi honours the Swiss naturalist Albert Monard (1886–1952), who conducted African collecting expeditions between 1928 and 1947. As with many small, geographically restricted Nannocharax species, N. monardi has not been the subject of taxonomic revision since its original description, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) continues to list it under its original combination.
Morphology
Nannocharax monardi is a genuinely tiny fish: FishBase records a maximum length of just 1.5 in total length, making it one of the smaller members of a genus already built around small, elongate bodies. Like other Nannocharax, it is presumed to share the genus's general silhouette — a slender, somewhat cylindrical to laterally compressed body, a subterminal or slightly underslung mouth suited to picking food from the substrate, and the small, banded or barred patterning common to many darter characins — though no dedicated morphological description or photograph-backed account of N. monardi specifically is available in the sources consulted for this article. No sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Cubango (upper Okavango basin) and Kunene rivers, two separate southern African drainages that both rise in the Angolan highlands before running south — the Cubango into the Okavango Delta system in Botswana, the Kunene west to the Atlantic along the Angola–Namibia border. This places N. monardi well outside the tropical core of the genus's range and among the southernmost-occurring Nannocharax species.
Detailed habitat data — water chemistry, flow regime, substrate association — has not been published specifically for N. monardi. Related Nannocharax species are generally associated with flowing water over sand or fine gravel, consistent with a bottom-oriented, current-adapted lifestyle, and the Cubango and Kunene are both warm, seasonally variable African river systems, but applying those generalities to this species specifically would go beyond what has actually been documented.
Feeding
No diet study or feeding observation has been published for Nannocharax monardi. Data is sparse to the point that this article will not speculate on specific food items. Related small Nannocharax species are generally understood to graze algae, biofilm and small invertebrates from the substrate and among submerged debris, consistent with the genus's subterminal mouth and bottom-associated habits, but this is a genus-level generalisation rather than a confirmed fact for this species.

The wider Distichodontidae — including the better-known Distichodus species and the citharinids — are egg-scatterers with no parental care, and species in this family are rarely bred in captivity even when kept; Distichodus in particular is notoriously difficult to spawn in a home aquarium. It is reasonable to expect N. monardi follows the same broad egg-scattering pattern typical of its family, but no confirmed breeding mode, clutch size or parental behaviour has been recorded for this species specifically, and it is not known to have been bred in the aquarium trade at all.

Nannocharax monardi has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. No aquarium husbandry records, care guides or trade reports were located for this species — it is not a fish reliably available to keepers, and any tank parameters offered here would be extrapolation rather than documented fact. At a maximum size of 1.5 in it would, in principle, suit only a small, gently flowing, well-oxygenated nano setup among similarly diminutive tankmates, matching the general profile of small Nannocharax species in the genus, but this is a genus-level inference, not a care record specific to N. monardi. Prospective keepers should treat this as an essentially unavailable, undocumented species rather than a practical aquarium candidate.
Conservation
Nannocharax monardi has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and no dedicated conservation assessment exists for the species. Its known range — the Cubango and Kunene rivers of the Angola–Namibia border region — sits within river systems facing broader regional pressures typical of southern African freshwater habitats, including water abstraction and land-use change in the Angolan highlands headwaters, but no species-specific population data, threat assessment or trend exists to support a conservation status beyond Not Evaluated. Given how little has been published on this species since its 1936 description, its true range and status remain effectively unknown.
