Taxonomy & naming

Nannocharax parvus was described by the French ichthyologist Paul Pellegrin in 1906. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae within the order Characiformes, a strictly African lineage that also contains the much larger, plant-shredding Distichodus and the deep-bodied, algae-grazing citharinids. The genus Nannocharax — from the Greek nannos, "dwarf", plus the characin root charax — comprises a large number of small, bottom-oriented species distributed across West and Central African river systems, most of which, like this one, are poorly studied outside a handful of taxonomic and aquarium accounts.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid combination Nannocharax parvus; nothing in the cached record suggests a historical synonym or a recent reclassification for this species, so it is treated here under its original combination. GBIF and FishBase both list it within Distichodontidae with Pellegrin's 1906 authority.

Morphology
