Taxonomy & naming
Nannocharax usongo was described in 2009 by Sonja Dunz and Ulrich Schliewen, part of a wave of revisionary work on the genus Nannocharax that resolved a number of previously confused or undescribed West and Central African forms. It belongs to the family Distichodontidae within the order Characiformes — the African characin family that also includes the much larger, plant-shredding Distichodus and the deep-bodied, algae-grazing citharinids (traditionally placed in their own family, Citharinidae, by some authors) — and to the genus Nannocharax, a group of small, elongated, bottom-oriented characins found across tropical West and Central Africa.
The species epithet honours Dr. Leonard Usongo, though the cache consulted for this account does not preserve the fuller citation context for that dedication. As with much of the genus, Nannocharax usongo is a narrow-range endemic known from a specific drainage rather than a widespread species, and its 2009 description means it postdates most of the older aquarium and ichthyological literature on the genus.
Morphology
Nannocharax usongo is a genuinely small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum size of just 1.5 in standard length — well within the "nano fish" bracket and far smaller than the trade-familiar piranhas and pacus that dominate popular ideas of what a characin looks like. Like other members of the genus, it has an elongated, subcylindrical body suited to life close to the substrate rather than in open water.
A distinctive feature noted for the species is a thickened first pelvic-fin ray, an adaptation shared with other stream-dwelling Nannocharax that helps the fish cling to submerged wood and stone in current rather than being swept downstream. The dorsal fin carries 10–14 soft rays and the anal fin 10–12, with no spines recorded in either fin — a fin-ray count consistent with the genus as a whole.
Habitat
The species is known from the Cross River and Niger Delta drainages of Cameroon, in the tropical latitude band roughly 6°N to 5°N and 6°E to 10°E — a narrow, specific range rather than the continent-spanning distribution seen in some African characins. FishBase classifies it as a benthopelagic freshwater species, meaning it lives close to the bottom while still moving up into the water column, consistent with the pelvic-fin adaptation for holding position against current.

A keeper should plan around live and frozen small foods as the backbone of the diet, offered where the fish can find them on or near the substrate rather than relying on foods that float or scatter through open water, since these are bottom-oriented feeders by nature.
Mating

As a bottom-oriented fish, floor space and surface texture (wood, smooth stone, leaf litter) matter more than tank height.
Because it is a wild-caught nano species from flowing water, good oxygenation and gentle but real water movement are sensible design choices, and tankmates should be equally small and non-aggressive so this diminutive characin is not outcompeted at feeding time.
