Neolebias trewavasae is a tiny West African characin, one of the largest species in its own genus and yet still barely finger-length as an adult — a fish that belongs to the same broad group as the plant-shredding Distichodus and Nile-basin citharinids, but shares almost none of their reputation for size or destruction. In the aquarium trade it is sometimes called the African emperor tetra, a quiet, active shoaler that spends its time swimming steadily through cover rather than causing trouble, and it is rarely seen for sale despite being easy to keep once its soft, warm forest-stream water is respected.
