Odontocharacidium varii is a miniature darter tetra from the upper Río Orinoco basin, described only in 2020 and known from just three blackwater tributaries in Venezuela. It belongs to the sailfin-tetra family Crenuchidae, whose members perch and dart along the bottom rather than swim in open water like a typical characin, and at roughly 1 in total length it ranks among the smallest fish in the entire order Characiformes. It is a true micro-predator that picks tiny invertebrates and insect larvae from leaf litter rather than a flake-eater, and it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade — described too recently, and from too narrow and remote a range, to have built any real captive-care record. This article lays out what the original description and related sources actually document, without padding in facts nobody has yet gathered.

Taxonomy & naming

Odontocharacidium varii was described in 2020 by Queiroz Rodrigues and Netto-Ferreira in the Brazilian journal Neotropical Ichthyology, the second species placed in the genus Odontocharacidium alongside O. aphanes. The genus sits in the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters and sailfin tetras — within the order Characiformes; Crenuchidae is a distinct lineage from the better-known tetra families, characterised by a benthic, perching lifestyle rather than open-water shoaling.

The species epithet varii honours Richard P. Vari (1949–2016), the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History ichthyologist whose decades of work on Neotropical fishes, including Crenuchidae, underpins much of the modern taxonomy of the group. O. varii is distinguished from its only congener, O. aphanes, by a combination of characters including the presence of an antorbital bone, a supraorbital laterosensory canal, a single postcleithrum, conspicuous bars that extend further down the flank, and two dark round blotches at the base of the caudal peduncle.

Morphology

Odontocharacidium varii is a genuinely tiny fish: the original description gives a maximum standard length of 0.5 in in the largest examined specimen, which corresponds to roughly 1 in total length — placing it among the smallest characiforms known. Like other crenuchid darters, it has an elongate, slender body built for resting on and darting between pieces of submerged wood and leaf litter rather than for sustained open-water swimming.

Diagnostic features separating it from O. aphanes are largely structural and best seen under magnification — the antorbital bone, laterosensory canal pattern and postcleithrum count noted above — alongside external pattern differences: bars on the flank that reach further ventrally, and a pair of dark round blotches on the caudal peduncle. As with many recently described micro-species, detailed information on live coloration and sexual differences has not been documented beyond the preserved-specimen description.

Habitat

The species is currently known from just three localities, all in the upper Río Orinoco basin of Venezuela: Caño Chola (the type locality), a caño entering the Río Casiquiare, and Caño Curcutito in the Río Autana — small, forest-shaded tributary streams typical of the upper Orinoco's blackwater and clearwater drainage. All three sites fall within areas that carry some form of protection, including national parks and indigenous reserves, which has helped keep the habitat comparatively undisturbed.

Detailed water chemistry for these specific caños was not reported in the original description. The upper Orinoco system generally runs soft and acidic to circumneutral, and the closely related O. aphanes has been documented in extremely soft, acidic blackwater (pH around 5.3, very low conductivity) at a similar temperature range in the low-to-mid 20s °C — a reasonable proxy for O. varii's likely conditions, though it is not a confirmed measurement for this species itself.

Feeding

The original description did not report stomach-content data for Odontocharacidium varii, but the genus and family are well characterised as micro-predators: crenuchid darters perch on leaf litter and submerged wood and dart out to take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other micro-fauna picked from the substrate and water column, rather than grazing or filter-feeding.

In the aquarium, this feeding style means a fish of this genus is unlikely to recognise or take flake food readily; keepers of the related O. aphanes report success only with small live and frozen foods — microworm, newly hatched brine shrimp and cyclops-sized fare — matched to the fish's tiny mouth. No captive feeding record exists yet for O. varii specifically, so this is drawn from its close relative and the family's documented ecology rather than direct observation.

Mating

Nothing specific to Odontocharacidium varii's courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented. The original description notes that the gonads of the examined specimens were either immature or in a resting state, meaning the type series itself provides no direct evidence of breeding condition or behaviour in the wild.

Within Crenuchidae more broadly, the sailfin darters Crenuchus spilurus and Poecilocharax species are known cave- or leaf-spawners in which the male takes up a brief guarding role over a small clutch, and true Characidium darters are known to scatter eggs over the substrate. Whether O. varii follows either pattern has not been confirmed by direct observation, so this should be treated as a plausible family-level expectation rather than a documented fact for this species.

Breeding

Breeding in nature is undocumented for Odontocharacidium varii — the original description explicitly notes that examined specimens carried immature or resting gonads, so no spawning behaviour, egg description or fry account exists in the primary literature. As a species described only in 2020 and essentially absent from the aquarium trade, there is likewise no hobby or commercial breeding record to draw on.

By analogy with its genus and family, a cave- or leaf-spawning mode with brief male attendance (as in Crenuchus and Poecilocharax) is a reasonable expectation given the group's biology, but this has not been confirmed for O. varii itself. Any keeper attempting to breed this species would essentially be working from first principles rather than an established protocol.

In the aquarium

Odontocharacidium varii is not an established aquarium fish — it was described in 2020 from three remote Orinoco tributaries and has no meaningful presence in the trade, so care information has to be inferred cautiously from its genus and close relative rather than from direct keeper experience. If it were kept, its size argues strongly for a true nano setup: at roughly 1 in total length it is easily outcompeted or even eaten by ordinary community tankmates, and it would need a quiet, species-appropriate nano tank with soft, acidic, warm water, a leaf-litter and fine-wood substrate to perch on, and gentle flow rather than open swimming space.

Because it is a micro-predator rather than a flake-eater, any keeper would need to commit to small live or frozen foods sized for its mouth — the same requirement documented for its congener O. aphanes. Given the total absence of a captive-care track record, acquiring wild specimens (were any ever exported) would carry real risk, and this species is best regarded today as a taxonomic curiosity and a conservation-watch fish rather than a viable aquarium subject.

Conservation

Odontocharacidium varii is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. That assessment rests on its documented occurrence within well-preserved habitat inside national parks and indigenous reserves in the upper Río Orinoco basin, with no identified threats reported at the time of its 2020 description and assessment.

The caveat that comes with any Least Concern rating for a species known from only three localities is that its full range may simply be under-surveyed — the upper Orinoco's caños are remote and have not been exhaustively sampled — so the true extent of occurrence could be larger, or the species could in fact be genuinely narrow-range. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on O. varii, and its protected-area distribution is currently its strongest safeguard.
