Odontocharacidium aphanes was described by Stanley H. Weitzman and Royal D. Kanazawa in 1977, originally within the genus Characidium before later work split off Odontocharacidium to house a small number of Amazonian darters with distinctive dentition. It belongs to the family Crenuchidae — the South American darters — within the order Characiformes, a family that also includes the popular sailfin characins Crenuchus and Poecilocharax alongside the much larger and more numerous stream-bed darters of the genus Characidium.
The genus name Odontocharacidium combines the Greek odous/odont- ("tooth") with a reference to Characidium, alluding to the tooth characters that distinguish it from that genus; the species epithet aphanes is Greek for "unseen" or "inconspicuous," a fitting name for a fish barely large enough to see clearly in the field. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the currently valid combination Odontocharacidium aphanes (Weitzman & Kanazawa, 1977).
Morphology
Odontocharacidium aphanes is minute even by darter standards, with FishBase recording a maximum length of just 0.5 in standard length, placing it among the smallest known fish species. The body is slender and elongate, typical of the Crenuchidae, with a somewhat flattened underside adapted to resting on submerged wood and leaf litter rather than swimming freely in the water column.
Like other crenuchid darters, O. aphanes has a reduced swim bladder, which removes the buoyancy that would otherwise keep it hovering in open water and instead lets it perch and settle on a surface, darting forward in short bursts before resting again — the behaviour that gives the family its common name. Colouration in life includes a greenish cast reflected in the trade name "green dwarf tetra," though at this size fine detail is difficult to observe outside a macro lens.
Habitat
Odontocharacidium aphanes is native to the Amazon River basin, with records spanning Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. It occupies typical Amazonian lowland freshwater habitat, associating with submerged wood, leaf litter and fine root tangles in slow-moving stretches of river and tributary systems, where its perching habit and tiny size let it exploit microhabitat largely unavailable to bigger fish.
FishBase gives a water range of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 5.8–7.0, consistent with the warm, soft, mildly acidic conditions typical of much of the Amazon basin, though hardness data for the species specifically is not well documented. As with many small Amazonian characins, structure — wood, leaves and fine debris — appears to matter as much as water chemistry, giving the fish surfaces to rest on and cover from predators.
Feeding
Odontocharacidium aphanes is a micropredator, taking small invertebrates in the wild rather than grazing or filter-feeding. Its tiny mouth restricts it to correspondingly tiny prey — micro-crustaceans, insect larvae and other minute invertebrates picked from the substrate or leaf litter it perches on.
In the aquarium this translates directly: keepers report the species is effectively omnivorous within its size constraints but often ignores flake food outright, doing best on live or frozen foods sized appropriately for a fish under 1 in — microworm, baby brine shrimp nauplii, cyclops and similarly small fare. Given a maximum size of roughly 0.5 in, Odontocharacidium aphanes is strictly a nano-tank fish, and it should never be mixed with anything capable of eating a fish this small — which in practice rules out the vast majority of typical community tankmates. A quiet, densely planted or leaf-littered nano aquarium with gentle water movement, soft and mildly acidic water in the FishBase-cited range of pH 5.8–7.0 and 75–82 °F, and minimal competition for food gives this species its best chance.
Because it is a bottom-perching darter rather than an open-water swimmer, provide plenty of resting surfaces — driftwood, broad leaves, fine root tangles — rather than open swimming space. Feeding is the other key variable: offer small live or frozen foods routinely, since this micropredator may simply starve on flake alone. Male aggression toward other males means stocking more than one male calls for a reasonably sized, well-furnished tank with multiple sightline breaks.
Conservation
