Parodon pongoensis was described by William Ray Allen in 1942 and placed in the genus Parodon, one of three genera (with Apareiodon and Saccodon) making up the family Parodontidae — a small group of scraping characins often called "scraper tetras" or "scrapetooth characins" for their specialised, downturned mouths. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for the valid combination Parodon pongoensis (Allen, 1942); the species has not been subject to the kind of large-scale generic reshuffling seen elsewhere in Serrasalmidae, and it remains in Parodon as originally placed.
Parodontidae sits within Characiformes but well outside the piranha-pacu lineage (Serrasalmidae) that dominates this atlas's "Piranhas & Pacus" section; Parodon is grouped here editorially with the hemiodontids and other minor grazing/schooling characins rather than with the predatory or migratory food-fish genera. The species epithet "pongoensis" refers to a pongo — a Spanish-derived term used in Peru and Ecuador for a narrow river gorge or canyon — pointing to the swift, confined tributary reaches where the type material was collected.
Morphology
Parodon pongoensis is a slender, elongate, faintly torpedo-shaped fish that reaches a maximum recorded size of about 4 in standard length, making it one of the smaller characins covered in this section — nothing like the pacus or true piranhas it shares a broad taxonomic order with. FishBase gives a tropical freshwater temperature range of roughly 72–79 °F, and aquarium sources give a workable pH range of about 6.0–7.5, consistent with the moderately soft, flowing, well-oxygenated water typical of Amazonian foothill and tributary streams.
As a benthopelagic species, Parodon pongoensis is generally found near the bottom in current, over rock, gravel and submerged wood where algae and biofilm accumulate — its principal food source — rather than in still, heavily vegetated backwaters. Conservation

As a species with no meaningful presence in the aquarium trade and no commercial fishery, Parodon pongoensis is not subject to collection pressure; its main long-term watch items would be the broader threats facing western Amazon foothill streams generally, such as deforestation-linked sedimentation and water-quality change, rather than anything specific to this species.
