Taxonomy & naming
Petulanos spiloclistron was described in 1974 by Winterbottom, originally placed in the genus Anostomus. A later taxonomic revision of the family Anostomidae split three Anostomus-group species — including this one — out into the newly erected genus Petulanos, reflecting differences in dentition, body proportions and other characters from the type species Anostomus anostomus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for this combination; older literature and some hobby sources may still list the species as Anostomus spiloclistron.
The species belongs to Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes — a family named for the oblique, head-down feeding posture many of its members adopt while grazing algae and biofilm from submerged surfaces. Petulanos spiloclistron is endemic to a single drainage, the Nickerie River basin in Suriname, which sets it apart from the far more widely distributed Anostomus species more commonly seen in the aquarium trade.

Like other anostomids, Petulanos spiloclistron has an elongated, torpedo-shaped body built for holding position in current while grazing at an angle rather than for open-water pursuit. Given its 6.5 in adult size, a minimum tank of around 55 US gal is recommended, with a footprint of roughly 100 × 15.5 in to give the shoal room to establish territory and line up along driftwood and root structures.
