Taxonomy & naming
The species was first described as Anostomus intermedius by the ichthyologist Richard Winterbottom in 1980, in a monograph on the systematics, osteology and phylogenetic relationships of the Ostariophysan subfamily Anostominae published by the Royal Ontario Museum. For nearly three decades it sat in the large, morphologically defined genus Anostomus alongside species such as A. anostomus and A. ternetzi.
A 2008 phylogenetic revision by Sidlauskas and Vari found that the traditional genus Anostomus, as then constituted, was not a natural (monophyletic) group. To resolve this the authors erected the new genus Petulanos for three species that formed their own distinct lineage — P. intermedius (Essequibo basin), P. plicatus and P. spiloclistron (both Xingu basin) — which the analysis placed phylogenetically closer to genera such as Gnathodolus, Sartor and Synaptolaemus than to the remaining Anostomus species. The species therefore carries the combination Petulanos intermedius (Winterbottom, 1980), with the original describer's name retained in parentheses to show the genus has changed since the original description. It belongs to the family Anostomidae, the headstanders, within the order Characiformes.
Morphology
Petulanos intermedius shares the elongated, torpedo-shaped body plan typical of Anostomidae headstanders: a slender, laterally compressed body, a pointed head, and an upturned, terminal-to-slightly-subterminal mouth suited to grazing surfaces rather than seizing prey. Close relatives in the former Anostomus group max out in the range of roughly 4–8 in, and P. intermedius and its Petulanos relatives are reported at a maximum length in the same broad window, cited here as roughly 6.5–8 in — a real, medium-sized characin rather than a nano fish, and keepers should plan tank size around the upper end of that range.
Detailed colour-pattern and fin-count data specific to P. intermedius are not well documented in the sources available for this account; data sparse. Like other headstanders it likely shows the characteristic longitudinal striping or blotching typical of the group, but this should not be asserted as fact for this specific species without a confirmed source.
Habitat
Petulanos intermedius is known from the Essequibo river basin in Guyana, South America — a river system it shares with the other two Petulanos species' home ranges in the adjacent Xingu basin of Brazil, though P. intermedius itself is the Essequibo representative of the genus. As with other Anostomidae, it is a river-dwelling fish, associated with flowing water over submerged wood, rock and vegetation where it can graze the biofilm and algal turf that coats these surfaces.
Specific published water-chemistry data for P. intermedius itself is sparse. The closely related, better-documented Anostomus ternetzi occupies fast-flowing rivers over rocky substrate in the Orinoco and Guianas region at 68–82 °F and pH 5.5–7.5, soft to neutral and slightly acidic — a reasonable proxy for the conditions P. intermedius likely experiences in the wild, given the geographic and ecological overlap, but it should be treated as an informed estimate rather than a confirmed figure for this species.
Feeding
Headstanders in this group are grazers, not predators. Petulanos intermedius forages in the characteristic oblique, head-down posture shared across Anostomidae, working algae and biofilm ('aufwuchs') off wood, rock and other submerged surfaces, and picking up small invertebrates encountered while grazing. The related Anostomus ternetzi is documented as omnivorous but primarily herbivorous, taking algae, blanched vegetables and wafers alongside occasional live or frozen foods — a reasonable model for how P. intermedius likely feeds, though the specific split has not been quantified for this species.
In the aquarium, a diet weighted toward vegetable matter is the safest approach for any Petulanos or Anostomus-type headstander: algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach) and quality herbivore-leaning pellets, supplemented with occasional small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm or daphnia. Fish kept on a purely protein-heavy diet with no vegetable matter tend to fare poorly over time.
Mating
No specific courtship or pairing behaviour has been documented for Petulanos intermedius in the sources available for this account; data sparse. Across the wider headstander group, external sexual dimorphism is generally subtle to absent, and most hobby accounts of related Anostomus and Leporinus species report that sexes are difficult to distinguish outside of breeding condition, when females may appear fuller-bodied with eggs. Petulanos intermedius is not established as a regularly bred aquarium fish. Headstanders as a group are typically egg-scatterers with no parental care, releasing eggs over vegetation or fine substrate rather than building a nest or guarding a brood site; a handful of related Leporinus and Anostomus species have been spawned in captivity or farmed commercially, but successful home breeding is rare across the family and unreported for P. intermedius specifically.
Given the lack of documented spawning accounts for this species, keepers interested in breeding headstanders are better served starting with a well-documented relative. For P. intermedius itself, the honest position is that this remains essentially an undescribed area of its biology in the aquarium literature.
In the aquarium
Petulanos intermedius is a lean, active, mid-sized characin that needs more swimming room than its slender profile suggests — plan for a long tank of at least 47 in given a likely adult size in the high teens of centimetres, with strong water movement and good oxygenation to mimic the flowing rivers it comes from. Décor should include wood and rock to provide grazing surfaces, since biofilm and algae on hardscape make up a meaningful part of its natural diet.
As with many Anostomidae relatives — several Leporinus and Anostomus species are notorious fin-nippers and become increasingly territorial with age — keepers should be cautious about tankmates and watch behaviour closely as the fish matures; this species has not been specifically documented as aggressive, but it should not be assumed docile purely because detailed behavioural data is lacking. It is very likely, like its relatives, to be an excellent jumper, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. This is not a beginner nano-tank fish: it is a genuine river grazer that wants space, current and a vegetable-forward diet.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Petulanos intermedius as Least Concern, though a specific assessment record with a numeric identifier was not located in the sources available for this account; the status is recorded here as reported. As a fish restricted to the Essequibo basin without evidence of major population decline, a Least Concern listing is broadly consistent with its known range, though detailed population data is sparse — typical of many small, non-commercial characins that receive limited targeted study.
The species is not known to be significant in the aquarium trade or commercial fisheries, and no specific conservation pressures (damming, deforestation, pollution) have been documented for it individually in the available sources; general pressures facing Guianan freshwater systems would apply but should not be overstated without direct evidence for this species.
