Pseudocurimata patiae was described by the American ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann in 1914 and placed in the genus Pseudocurimata within the family Curimatidae, part of the larger characin superfamily grouping that also contains the true piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae, though the curimatids themselves are a separate, toothless-jawed lineage of detritivorous grazers. FishBase attributes the most recent systematic treatment of the genus to Vari's 1989 revision of the family, which is the standard modern reference for Curimatidae relationships; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) remains the authority for the currently valid combination Pseudocurimata patiae.
