Pseudocurimata troschelii is a small, quiet grazing characin from the Pacific-slope rivers of western Ecuador and northern Peru — a fish that will never headline a piranha documentary and has no place in it. It belongs to the curimatid lineage of Serrasalmidae relatives that spend their lives sifting detritus, algae and biofilm from riverbed sediment rather than hunting, and it tops out at a modest 8 in total length. In its native Guayas and Zarumilla drainages it matters far more as a subsistence food fish — locally known as "boquiche" and eaten as "dica" in rural Ecuador — than as an aquarium subject, and almost nothing has been published on keeping or breeding it in captivity. It sits in the genus Pseudocurimata within the family Curimatidae, a group of small-mouthed, toothless-jawed detritivorous characiforms that are only distantly related to the true piranhas and pacus of Serrasalmidae but are grouped with them here among the Amazon and Neotropical basin's non-tetra characins. As with much of the curimatid literature, older sources and databases may still carry this species under alternate generic placements from the twentieth-century revisions of the group; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the reference point for the currently valid combination, and this article keeps the name Pseudocurimata troschelii as given.

Little has been published specifically on the species' phylogenetic placement within Pseudocurimata, and no molecular or morphological revision turned up in the available sources. What is well documented is its regional identity: it is one of a small number of freshwater fishes native to the Pacific-draining rivers of western Ecuador, a fauna that is biogeographically distinct from the better-known Amazon basin characins most aquarists associate with the family.
