Taxonomy & naming
Serrasalmus neveriensis was described in 1993 by Antonio Machado-Allison, William Fink, Hernán López Rojas and Rodenas, placing it within the true piranha genus Serrasalmus in the family Serrasalmidae (piranhas, pacus and silver dollars), order Characiformes. The species epithet neveriensis refers to the Río Neveri drainage in Anzoátegui state, Venezuela, where the type material was collected — specifically from the Río Querecual, a tributary of the Neveri system.
Serrasalmus neveriensis is closely similar externally to Serrasalmus medinai, another Venezuelan coastal endemic, and the original description distinguishes the two chiefly by a lower number of body spots in S. neveriensis. As with the rest of the genus, the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the standing authority for the valid name and combination; nothing in the available sources suggests the species has been reassigned or synonymised since its description.
Morphology
Like other true piranhas, Serrasalmus neveriensis has the classic deep-bodied, laterally compressed silhouette with a blunt head, an underslung jaw and a single row of interlocking, blade-like tricuspid teeth in both jaws. FishBase records a maximum size of 7 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of the genus and considerably smaller than well-known Amazonian Serrasalmus such as S. rhombeus.
Detailed colouration and pattern data are sparse in the sources available here beyond the diagnostic note that it carries fewer body spots than its close relative S. medinai, which was the character used to separate the two species in the original description. Serrasalmus neveriensis is essentially absent from the aquarium trade — it is a small-range Venezuelan endemic with limited to no commercial collection, and the available hobby references describe it as rare and poorly documented rather than as an established aquarium fish. Prospective keepers should treat any specimen in the trade as very unusual and should not expect established husbandry protocols the way they would for a widely traded species like Pygocentrus nattereri.
Unlike the shoaling Pygocentrus species, Serrasalmus piranhas — including this one — are solitary and territorial and are kept singly rather than in groups; OpeFe's reference notes a minimum tank of around 31.5 in for the species, inferred largely from its close relative S. medinai rather than from direct rearing data. As with all Serrasalmus, the jaws are genuinely capable of a serious bite and the fish should be moved by container rather than net. Given its Endangered status and narrow native range, and the fact that piranhas of this genus are restricted or banned outright in many U.S. states and countries, a keeper should verify local law before acquiring any Serrasalmus and should never release one into open water under any circumstances.
Conservation

The assessment describes a small, localized population confined to central coastal Venezuelan fluvial systems, citing roughly 182 known specimens (about 91 mature individuals) and an estimated total of fewer than 250 mature individuals, meeting the small-population criterion (Criterion D) for the listing.
As a narrow-range coastal endemic restricted to a handful of small river systems rather than a major basin, the species is inherently vulnerable to localized threats — habitat degradation, water abstraction or pollution in the Neveri/Querecual drainage could disproportionately affect its entire known population. Its rarity and the associated Endangered status mean it should not be a target for aquarium collection, and the very limited data available on the species is itself a conservation concern, underscoring the need for further field survey work in its native range.
