Serrasalmus stagnatilis was described by the Scottish naturalist William Jardine in 1841, one of the earlier names given within the genus Serrasalmus, which the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises as the largest and most difficult piranha genus — dozens of nominal species distinguished by fine details of dentition, humeral spot pattern, and body proportions that have shifted repeatedly under revision. Serrasalmus sits in the family Serrasalmidae alongside the other true piranhas (Pygocentrus), the pacus, and the silver dollars, within the order Characiformes.
As with much of the genus, identification of S. stagnatilis in the wild and in the trade is not straightforward, and older literature and aquarium suppliers have at times used overlapping or superseded names across similar-looking Serrasalmus. This account follows the current valid combination, Serrasalmus stagnatilis (Jardine, 1841), without attempting to reassign it to any other genus.
Morphology
Serrasalmus stagnatilis shares the classic piranha build: a laterally compressed, deep-bodied silhouette, a blunt profile with a strongly underslung lower jaw, and a single row of interlocking, tricuspid, razor-edged teeth in both jaws that shear rather than tear. No confirmed maximum length figure for S. stagnatilis specifically was found in the available literature. Across the genus Serrasalmus as a whole, adult sizes documented in the scientific literature span roughly 4.5–14 in, with a few species reaching up to about 21.5 in, so S. stagnatilis most likely falls somewhere in that broad range — but that is a genus-level inference, not a species-specific measurement, and should be treated as such.
Colouration details specific to this species were likewise not found in the sources reviewed. Most Serrasalmus show a silvery body with varying degrees of dark speckling and a humeral (shoulder) spot, and colour intensity across the genus commonly shifts with age, mood, and water conditions.
Habitat
Serrasalmus as a genus is distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná and Guianas river systems of South America, and S. stagnatilis is part of that broad Neotropical radiation. Specific locality data, type-locality coordinates, and habitat descriptions particular to this species were not available in the sources consulted for this article.
Water conditions across the genus are generally warm and softer, mildly acidic tropical river water. For S. stagnatilis specifically, published aquarium-care references cite a working range of roughly 75–86 °F and pH 5.5–7.5 — consistent with typical South American river conditions rather than an extreme blackwater environment. Structure such as submerged wood, roots and dense cover is standard for the genus, supporting an ambush-and-retreat lifestyle rather than open-water pursuit.
Feeding
Serrasalmus stagnatilis is an opportunistic carnivore, and the genus's well-documented feeding strategy is fin- and scale-nipping combined with predation on smaller fish, insects and crustaceans, plus scavenging carrion and, occasionally, plant material. This is a stalking, ambush-oriented predator rather than a schooling pursuit hunter — it lies up in cover and takes advantage of passing prey rather than chasing in the open.
In the aquarium this translates into a varied meaty diet: fish fillet, prawn, mussel and quality carnivore pellets are all appropriate. Live "feeder" fish should be avoided on general principle — the disease and nutritional-quality risk applies here as with any predatory fish — and any smaller or slower tankmates should be assumed to be at risk of fin damage or predation.
Mating
No species-specific courtship description for Serrasalmus stagnatilis was found in the sources reviewed. Across the genus, spawning in captivity is rare — aquarium literature notes that only two or three Serrasalmus species have been bred with any regularity, and most, including presumably this one, have no documented captive-breeding account. Where courtship has been observed in related Serrasalmus, it follows the broader true-piranha pattern of a pair separating from other individuals and becoming more territorial around a chosen substrate site ahead of spawning, but this should not be taken as confirmed for S. stagnatilis itself.

True piranhas in the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are substrate egg-layers: a pair clears and defends a nest site among plants or root tangles, the female releases adhesive eggs that are guarded and fanned — most often by the male — and the eggs hatch within a few days in warm water. This is the expected mode for S. stagnatilis by genus-level pattern, and it is emphatically not a mouthbrooder or bubble-nest builder.
That said, no confirmed aquarium or commercial breeding report specific to Serrasalmus stagnatilis was found. Breeding within Serrasalmus generally is described as difficult and uncommon compared with the shoaling Pygocentrus species, several of which (notably P. nattereri) are bred routinely in the hobby and commercially. Prospective breeders should treat successful captive reproduction of this species as unproven rather than assume it will follow readily from generic piranha husbandry.
In the aquarium
The essential fact for keeping Serrasalmus stagnatilis, as with most members of its genus, is that it is a solitary, territorial predator, not a shoaling fish — the opposite husbandry approach to the well-known Pygocentrus piranhas. It should be kept alone, in a tank sized generously for an unconfirmed but likely mid-sized adult (plan conservatively, in the 12 in-plus range, given the genus's typical spread), with strong filtration, dim lighting, and dense cover from driftwood or robust planting to give it places to retreat and ambush from.
The teeth and jaw strength typical of Serrasalmus are genuinely formidable, and this fish should be moved by container rather than net. Tankmates are generally not recommended for solitary Serrasalmus; any companion fish would need to be too large or fast to be seen as prey or a nipping target, and most keepers simply house the species alone. As with all piranhas, keepers must check local and state or national law before acquiring one — piranhas are restricted or banned outright in many U.S. states and a number of countries — and must never release this or any piranha into open water.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment for Serrasalmus stagnatilis was found; the species should be treated as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than assumed safe or at risk. This data gap is common among the less commercially prominent members of a large, taxonomically complex genus like Serrasalmus, where research and assessment effort concentrates on a handful of well-known species.
In the absence of a specific assessment, the general pressures facing South American freshwater fish across the Amazon, Orinoco, Paraná and Guianas systems — damming, deforestation-linked sedimentation, and water-quality change — are the relevant long-term watch items for this species as for many of its relatives. Given the sparse data, keepers and researchers alike should be cautious about asserting either a healthy or a threatened status for S. stagnatilis specifically.
