Taxonomy & naming

Steindachnerina elegans was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1875. It belongs to the family Curimatidae — small, toothless, detritivorous characins sometimes lumped by hobbyists into a vague "minor characins" category alongside the hemiodontids, Parodon and their relatives — within the order Characiformes. The genus Steindachnerina itself was later named in Franz Steindachner's honour, a common pattern in Neotropical ichthyology where a prolific describer's own name becomes the root of a later genus.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the governing authority for the valid name and combination used here; GBIF records the type locality simply as Brazil. Curimatid taxonomy has seen substantial revision over the past several decades as researchers have worked to sort the many superficially similar silver, toothless grazers into natural genera, and Steindachnerina is one of the larger resulting genera, but nothing in the available sources suggests this particular species has been affected by a recent name change — it is treated here under its established combination, Steindachnerina elegans.

Habitat

The species is known from a cluster of river basins in eastern Brazil: the Pardo, Jequitinhonha and São Francisco river basins across the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais, along with coastal river systems of Bahia. Within the São Francisco system, a reproductive study specifically documents the population downstream of the Três Marias dam in Minas Gerais, indicating it persists in a regulated, dam-affected stretch of river rather than only in pristine headwaters.
