Taxonomy & naming
Chaetostoma bifurcum was formally described by Lujan, Meza-Vargas, Astudillo-Clavijo, Barriga-Salazar, and López-Fernández in 2015 in Copeia (volume 103, number 3), as part of a multilocus molecular phylogenetic study of the Chaetostoma clade. The holotype (MEPN 14687) was collected from the Otongo River upstream of its confluence with the Baba River, in the Guayas River drainage of Santo Domingo de las Tsáchilas Province, Ecuador (00°21′06.90″S, 79°12′52.32″W), at roughly 328–2133 ft elevation in the Andean foothills. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the species as valid; the IUCN has not yet evaluated it.
The specific epithet bifurcum is Latin for 'two-pronged' or 'forked', referring directly to the diagnostic 1–2 evertible cheek odontodes (interopercular spines) — the character that most reliably distinguishes C. bifurcum from congeners, which typically bear more. The genus Chaetostoma takes its name from the Greek chaite (hair, bristle) and stoma (mouth), alluding to the bristle-like odontodes of the snout common to all members.
Morphology
Chaetostoma bifurcum reaches a maximum of 5.5 in standard length (SL; confirmed at 5.5 in SL in the DePaul University checklist of western Ecuador's freshwater fishes). Total length is not published; an estimate near 6.5 in is reasonable. It is a relatively small to mid-sized Chaetostoma.
The diagnostic characters of the species are the 1–2 evertible cheek odontodes (interopercular spines), which are fewer than in most Chaetostoma — the reduced number gives the species its forked or 'two-pronged' name. Additional differentiating features include eight or more branched dorsal fin rays, at least one vertical column of five plate rows at the narrowest point of the caudal peduncle, and a naked band of skin along the anterior and anterolateral snout margins (plates absent where most congeners carry them). Coloration consists of dark, vertically elongate bars on a lighter background; the bars may be irregular, broken, or continuous, and are described as indistinct.
As with all Chaetostoma, the body is fully armoured in overlapping bony scutes, the head is broad and dorsoventrally flattened, and the mouth is ventral and disc-like, adapted to maintaining purchase on current-swept rock surfaces.
Habitat
Chaetostoma bifurcum occupies Pacific-slope foothill streams in western Ecuador and extreme northwestern Peru. Its confirmed range spans the Esmeraldas, Guayas, and Santa Rosa river drainages in Ecuador and the Tumbes drainage in Peru. Within this range it inhabits coastal Andean mountain streams at roughly 328–2133 ft above sea level — channels with fast, turbulent flow, rocky or boulder substrates, and water that is typically clear, soft to moderately hard, and well-oxygenated.
No water-parameter measurements specific to C. bifurcum have been published. Extrapolating from the Pacific foothill zone of Ecuador generally, temperatures are expected in the range of 64–77 °F (lower at higher elevations, warmer toward the coast), pH approximately 6.5–7.5, and conductivity relatively low. The critical requirement is current: this is an obligately rheophilic fish whose disc-like ventral sucker and armoured body are engineering solutions to the challenge of remaining anchored in fast water while feeding on exposed rock faces.
The species is considered relatively widespread and not rare in western Ecuador, which distinguishes it from the more restricted Chaetostoma of the Atlantic-slope Andes or the Colombian Chocó.
Feeding
No dietary study of Chaetostoma bifurcum has been published. Based on the genus, the species is a periphyton grazer: it uses its ventral sucker mouth and fine teeth to rasp diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and the microbial biofilm coating rock surfaces in fast current. This feeding mode is consistent across Chaetostoma, and the species' habitat in clear, well-lit foothill streams where primary production on exposed boulders is high supports the inference that periphyton is the dietary staple.
Some Chaetostoma species have been documented as facultative air-breathers, surfacing to gulp atmospheric oxygen when dissolved oxygen is transiently reduced — an ability that may also apply to C. bifurcum, though this has not been specifically investigated.
Mating
No mating observations have been published for Chaetostoma bifurcum. Within the genus, males are typically distinguished by more pronounced interopercular odontodes (cheek bristles) and engage in territorial displays centred on rock crevices or undercut boulders that serve as potential spawning sites. The reduced odontode count (1–2) that defines C. bifurcum may affect the nature of male-male competition and female assessment compared with higher-odontode congeners, but this has not been studied.
Breeding
No published captive or field breeding data exist for Chaetostoma bifurcum. Based on the broader Chaetostoma and loricariid pattern, the species is expected to be a cave or crevice spawner depositing adhesive eggs under flat rock surfaces or within boulder interstices, with the male guarding and fanning the clutch. Fry would be expected to resemble miniature adults and begin grazing periphyton shortly after emergence. Captive breeding of this species has not been documented in the accessible literature.
In the aquarium
Chaetostoma bifurcum does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade under its scientific name, though small Chaetostoma from Ecuador and Peru are occasionally exported under generic common names. If kept, the fish's rheophilic ecology dictates the primary aquarium requirements: strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen (a powerhead or spray bar aimed to agitate the surface is advisable), and a rocky substrate or rockwork that replicates the boulder-field microhabitat. Temperature should reflect the Andean foothill origin: approximately 64–75 °F is appropriate, and this fish is unlikely to thrive at the higher temperatures often used for Amazonian species.
At up to 5.5 in SL the species is a manageable size. Diet in captivity should centre on algae (natural growth on rock surfaces is ideal; supplement with algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables such as courgette or spinach). The species is expected to be peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates but may show the limited territorial behaviour toward conspecifics typical of the genus.
Given the species' preference for well-oxygenated, clean current, water quality must be maintained rigorously. Any prolonged elevation of nitrate, or reduction in flow, risks health complications typical of rheophilic loricariids kept in suboptimal conditions.
Conservation
Chaetostoma bifurcum has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it was described only in 2015 and many recently described neotropical fishes await formal assessment. Field surveys in western Ecuador suggest it is relatively common within its range, which spans multiple river drainages across the Ecuadorian Pacific slope and into Peru. This broader distribution provides some buffer against localised habitat loss compared with single-basin endemics.
Nevertheless, the Pacific slope of the Andes in Ecuador and Peru faces ongoing threats from land conversion, agricultural runoff, and artisanal mining that affect water clarity and stream geomorphology. The foothill streams where C. bifurcum is found are generally less intensively studied than Amazonian systems, and population-level data are lacking. No targeted conservation measures for this species are documented; its status rests on the general health of the Pacific-slope stream ecosystems of western Ecuador.
