Among the rubbernose plecos, Chaetostoma anomalum occupies an intriguing ecological niche: a torrent-adapted grazer from the cool, high-gradient streams draining into Lake Maracaibo at elevations reaching 3,500 metres. Its squat, rubber-lipped head pressed flat against fast-moving rock — combined with a tolerance for cooler temperatures that most common plecos cannot match — makes it a genuinely distinctive choice for the informed hobbyist's tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Chaetostoma anomalum was formally described by Charles Tate Regan in 1903 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History (Series 7, volume 11, number 66, article 79), from syntypes collected at Mérida, Río Albrieggas and Río Milla, Venezuela, at elevations of 1,500–3,500 metres. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists the valid combination as Chaetostoma anomalum Regan 1903, with the earlier combination Chaetostomus anomalus treated as a synonym.

The genus Chaetostoma was established by Regan as a catchall for the 'rubbernose' or 'bulldog' plecos — a large and notoriously difficult group within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae (Armbruster, 2004). As of 2026, the genus contains over 40 valid species, many from Andean piedmont streams, and the boundaries between taxa remain subject to ongoing revision. Fisch-Muller (in Reis et al., 2003) placed C. anomalum in the Ancistrinae (now Hypostominae), consistent with Armbruster's comprehensive phylogenetic treatment.

Phylogenetically, Chaetostoma belongs to a clade of rheophilic (current-loving) armoured catfishes with characteristic mid-ventral abdominal nakedness and prominent interopercular odontodes. The species sits within the Lake Maracaibo basin fauna, sharing its range with a handful of congeners in the Chama, Capazon, and Escalante river systems.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 6.5 in standard length (SL), making C. anomalum one of the larger Chaetostoma species and placing it near the upper end of the genus's size range. The body follows the classic rubbernose plan: heavily armoured with overlapping bony scutes, the head broad and flattened with a ventrally positioned sucking disc reinforced with a wide papillose oral disc that allows high-traction attachment to smooth rocks in fast current.

Ground coloration is dark brown to olive-grey on the dorsal surface, with paler underparts. Many specimens show faint reticulate or vermiculate patterning on the flanks, though this varies with age and condition. The caudal fin is moderately forked.

A distinguishing feature of the genus is the presence of interopercular odontodes (spines projecting from behind the gill cover), the absence of abdominal plates in most species, and the lack of the snout-edge plates seen in C. platyrhynchus. Chaetostoma is distinguished from Ancistrus by the complete absence of fleshy snout tentacles.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle. Males develop a broader, more massive head and slimmer ventral profile than females. They also possess disproportionately enlarged pelvic fins, which researchers have suggested may aid fertilisation by shielding a spawned clutch in fast-flowing water, preventing sperm dispersal by current. Gravid females are notably deeper-bodied when viewed laterally, particularly between the pectoral and pelvic fin bases.

Habitat

Chaetostoma anomalum is endemic to the Lake Maracaibo drainage of northwestern Venezuela and adjacent Colombia, specifically in the upper Chama, Capazon, and Escalante river systems. Type-locality elevations of 1,500–3,1640 ft indicate that this is primarily a high-altitude Andean stream species — an important distinguishing point from many tropical lowland loricariids.

At such elevations, the water is typically fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, cool (often 64–75 °F), slightly alkaline to neutral, and relatively soft due to granite and metamorphic substrates rather than calcium-rich limestone. Substrates are dominated by cobbles, smooth boulders, and bedrock slabs — surfaces that rubbernose plecos' powerful sucking discs are specifically adapted to exploit.

The fish occupy the most turbulent zones, pressing themselves against rocks in the main current and in the interstitial spaces between boulders. This habitat preference means they are highly dependent on high dissolved oxygen levels, which should be replicated in the aquarium. Lake Maracaibo itself is a large lowland system, but C. anomalum is found in the mountain tributaries feeding it, not in the lake proper.

Feeding

Chaetostoma anomalum is a periphyton grazer — it feeds primarily by rasping the biofilm of diatoms, green algae, cyanobacteria, and fine organic detritus that accumulates on submerged rock surfaces in fast-flowing mountain streams. The wide, papillose oral disc is ideally adapted to conforming to irregular rock surfaces and maintaining contact during feeding in current.

In the aquarium the same behavioural pattern prevails. Rocks colonised with a dense diatom or algae growth are the preferred feeding surfaces. Supplementary food should be delivered in forms that sink to the substrate and cannot be swept away: algae wafers, spirulina discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach, and sweet potato all work well), and commercial sinking pellets. The species is not a wood-eater and does not require driftwood in the way that Panaqolus or Panaque do.

The high-current native habitat means the digestive system is adapted to low-calorie, high-fibre food processed in relatively small quantities almost continuously. Overfeeding with high-protein foods (bloodworm, tubifex) is discouraged and may lead to digestive upset or compromised immunity over time. Variety of vegetable-matter foods, combined with a well-established algae growth in the tank, best mirrors the wild diet.

Mating

Very little specific field or laboratory data exists on the mating behaviour of C. anomalum in particular, but the reproductive biology of the genus Chaetostoma has been inferred from hobbyist accounts of congeners and from the anatomy documented in the literature. Males are territorial over spawning sites and likely defend suitable rock surfaces or crevices against rival males using the enlarged interopercular odontodes as both display and contact weapons.

The pelvic fin anatomy in male Chaetostoma is notable: the fins are disproportionately large relative to body size. One hypothesis, based on hobbyist observations of spawning in allied species, is that the male inverts himself over the clutch and uses the spread pelvic fins to create a physical barrier that helps retain sperm near the eggs in fast-flowing water — an unusual spawning adaptation for a loricariid.

Conditioning pairs in captivity mirrors the approach used for related genera: a nutritionally varied diet with heavy algae and vegetable components, clean, well-oxygenated water, and either a slight temperature drop (simulating seasonality in Andean highland streams) or an increase in water flow to trigger spawning readiness.

Breeding

As of 2026, no verified captive breeding reports for Chaetostoma anomalum specifically are recorded in the PlanetCatfish community database. Chaetostoma species in general are considered challenging to breed in captivity, and the specialist habitat requirements — cool, highly oxygenated, fast-flowing water — make it difficult to replicate the conditions these fish evolved in.

From what is known of congeners and from hobbyist accounts, Chaetostoma are presumed to be egg-adhesive spawners that deposit clutches on the underside of flat rocks in fast-flowing water. Unlike cave-spawning plecos such as Panaqolus, the eggs are placed on exposed rock surfaces in current — a strategy that depends on high water movement to supply oxygen to the clutch rather than parental fanning. Male guarding behaviour has been observed in some species, with the male pressing his body over the adhesive egg mass.

For aquarists interested in attempting a breeding project, a dedicated species tank with a strong canister filter and spray-bar return creating significant flow, a temperature of 68–73 °F, smooth flat rocks as spawning surfaces, and generous conditioning on varied algae-based foods would be the recommended setup. Patience and careful observation are essential.

In the aquarium

The most important thing to understand about C. anomalum in the aquarium is its demand for high dissolved oxygen and significant water movement. A tank with a gentle powerhead and a mature, slowly circulating filter will not satisfy this species. Strong directional flow from a canister filter return or spray bar — enough to ripple the surface — is required, and the fish should be observed regularly to ensure it is actively feeding and not gasping at the surface.

Temperature is the other critical parameter. As a high-altitude Andean species, C. anomalum is adapted to cooler water than most tropical plecos. A temperature range of 64–75 °F is appropriate; the species will likely show stress, immune suppression, and shortened lifespan at the 79–82 °F ranges suitable for most aquarium fish. This makes it an ideal companion for other cool-water species — temperate South American tetras, hillstream loaches, or Corydoras from high-altitude localities — but incompatible with most tropical community setups.

A 150-litre tank is a reasonable minimum for a pair or small group. The substrate should be smooth river gravel or flat stones, with an open water area and some rock caves for shelter. Plants are optional; robust species tolerant of strong flow (Anubias, Java fern) work well. Driftwood is not necessary. Water quality must be impeccable: zero ammonia and nitrite, with regular partial water changes of 25–30% weekly. The species is peaceful toward other fish and generally ignores tankmates unless they compete for the same algae-covered rocks.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Chaetostoma anomalum as Least Concern in 2021, reflecting a distribution across multiple river systems in the Lake Maracaibo drainage of Venezuela and Colombia and no evidence of rapid or severe population decline at the time of assessment. The species is occasionally collected for the ornamental fish trade but is not among the most commonly exported Chaetostoma, and captive breeding is not established in the hobby.

The key threats to high-altitude Andean stream species of this type are deforestation in watershed catchments, which increases sedimentation and turbidity — damaging to a periphyton grazer dependent on clean, algae-coated rock surfaces — and alterations to stream hydrology from agriculture and road construction. Venezuela's ongoing socioeconomic difficulties since the mid-2010s have made systematic monitoring of freshwater biodiversity in its mountain streams difficult, creating uncertainty about the species' current status. At present, the LC assessment stands, but ongoing catchment degradation warrants monitoring.
