Barely 1.5 in long as an adult, Corumbataia cuestae is one of the most diminutive loricariids in the upper Paraná basin — a type specimen for the concept of a micro-pleco. Confined to the stream network of the Rio Tietê in São Paulo state, it lives in fast, clear upland water where it rasps biofilm from rock and leaf surfaces, largely ignored by the ornamental trade but quietly documented by ichthyologists studying southern Brazil's extraordinary small-stream fish diversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Corumbataia cuestae was formally described by Heraldo A. Britski in 1997 in Comunicações do Museu de Ciências e Tecnologia da PUCRS (volume 10, page 233), where it simultaneously served as the type species for the newly erected genus Corumbataia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; updated June 2026) recognises Corumbataia as a valid genus within Loricariidae: Hypoptopomatinae, with Britski 1997 as the correct authority for both genus and species.

The genus belongs to the Hypoptopomatinae, the 'cascudinhos' — a diverse subfamily of small to minute armoured catfishes distributed through cis-Andean South America. Armbruster (2004) placed Hypoptopomatinae as one of the five principal subfamilial lineages within Loricariidae, though the subfamily's internal relationships remain a subject of ongoing molecular and morphological study. Corumbataia currently comprises three described species: C. cuestae (upper Paraná, Tietê drainage, São Paulo), C. tocantinensis (Araguaia and Tocantins basins), and C. britskii (upper Paraná, Sucuriú drainage, Mato Grosso do Sul), described by Ferreira & Ribeiro in 2007. Among these, C. cuestae is distinguished by a more rounded head profile and the presence of stripes on the unbranched caudal-fin rays.

Note that some authors have placed Corumbataia within Otothyrinae (a subfamily split from Hypoptopomatinae by some classifications); the Catalog of Fishes, followed here as the authoritative taxonomy, retains it in Hypoptopomatinae sensu lato.

Morphology

Adult C. cuestae reach approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL) — placing this among the smallest loricariids on record and making even the well-known dwarf Otocinclus look robust by comparison. The body is dorsoventrally flattened in the typical Hypoptopomatinae fashion, broad and depressed anteriorly, tapering into a slender caudal peduncle. The head is rounded in dorsal view, a feature that distinguishes it from the more depressed, elliptical-snouted C. britskii.

The skin is fully armoured with overlapping bony scutes. Ground colour in preserved specimens is pale to light brown with scattered melanophores; live colouration tends toward yellowish-brown with a faint speckled or reticulate pattern. A diagnostic character noted by Ferreira & Ribeiro (2007) is the presence of stripes on the unbranched caudal-fin rays in C. cuestae, absent in C. britskii. The mouth is ventral and sucker-like, with fine multicuspid teeth adapted for rasping biofilm and algae from hard substrates.

The exposed portion of the scapular bridge is formed only by the coracoid — narrow cleithra are covered by lateral scutes — a diagnostic character Britski used to define the genus Corumbataia. The swim bladder capsule is reduced, as in many benthic loricariids. Sexual dimorphism is not formally described for this species; as in related genera, males of breeding condition likely develop odontodes on the snout and pectoral spine, but data are sparse.

Habitat

Corumbataia cuestae is endemic to the Tietê River basin, a major tributary of the upper Paraná system draining south-eastward across the state of São Paulo. Within this basin it occupies small upland streams — clear-water riachos running over rocky and sandy substrates in the Atlantic Forest highland zone. The Tietê's headwaters lie at elevations above 2625 ft in the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar foothills, where stream temperatures are cooler and flows are highly seasonal.

Field data from comparable Tietê-basin cascudinhos indicate clear, well-oxygenated water with low to moderate conductivity, temperatures roughly in the range of 64–75 °F during cooler months and up to 79 °F in summer, soft to slightly hard water chemistry, and pH on the slightly acidic to near-neutral side. Current is typically moderate to fast over the rocky microhabitats favoured by the species. The fish adhere closely to smooth rock surfaces, submerged leaf litter, and wood, grazing the biofilm layer rather than digging into sediment.

The Tietê basin is one of the most heavily altered river systems in South America — its main channel passes through metropolitan São Paulo — but C. cuestae populations persist in upper headwater tributaries where riparian forest remains and water quality is relatively intact.

Feeding

Like other Hypoptopomatinae, C. cuestae is a periphyton grazer and biofilm rasper. Its fine multicuspid teeth are well suited to scraping the thin film of diatoms, filamentous algae, bacteria, and organic detritus that accumulates on rock, wood, and leaf surfaces in fast-flowing streams. Gut content studies on related species in the Hypoptopomatinae consistently find predominantly algae (particularly diatoms), fine detritus, and sand particles — the latter likely ingested incidentally while feeding on hard substrates.

The species is not a wood-eater (xylophage) in the manner of Panaqolus; its teeth are not spatulate and it does not appear to depend on cellulose digestion. Instead it relies on the nutritionally richer epilithic biofilm community. This dietary strategy means that in an aquarium context, periphyton-covered surfaces, vegetable matter, and high-quality algae wafers are appropriate foods. Detailed dietary data specific to C. cuestae are sparse in the published literature, so comparisons to congeners and close relatives in the Hypoptopomatinae are the best available proxy.

Mating

No published observations of courtship behaviour in Corumbataia cuestae are available. Given its minute size and its occurrence in fast-flowing upland streams, studying live behaviour in the field is challenging, and the species is rarely maintained in aquaria. Inferences from other small Hypoptopomatinae suggest that males establish small territories around suitable spawning sites — crevices in bedrock, sheltered undersides of stones, or sheltered areas of bark — and compete for access to females by displaying and patrolling.

Seasonal cues such as rising water temperature and increasing day length in spring (September–November in austral terms) and possibly elevated flow following rains are likely triggers for reproductive readiness, consistent with the breeding seasonality documented for related taxa in the Paraná and Atlantic Forest drainages. The species' small size and cryptic stream habitat make it unlikely to become an aquarium breeding subject without dedicated effort; no reports of captive reproduction appear in the hobbyist or scientific literature at this time.

Breeding

Specific breeding data for Corumbataia cuestae are not published. Based on the biology of related small-stream Hypoptopomatinae, the reproductive mode is expected to involve deposition of adhesive eggs in a sheltered microhabitat — a rock crevice, under a stone, or in a hollow of submerged wood — with some degree of parental guarding, likely by the male. Clutch sizes in micro-loricariids are typically small relative to larger species, with egg diameter corresponding to the parent's size.

Braga & Andrade (2005), studying a different stream fauna in the upper Paraíba do Sul region, documented spawning in related cascudinhos between October and February, with the reproductive cycle concluding by April — suggesting austral spring to summer as the primary breeding window for this guild of small loricariids in southeastern Brazil. If this pattern holds for C. cuestae (which is ecologically comparable), then breeding coincides with warmer, higher-flow stream conditions. Direct breeding records for the species do not exist in the peer-reviewed literature, and captive reproduction is not documented.

In the aquarium

Corumbataia cuestae is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade. It is not assigned an L-number, has no established common name outside its scientific one, and is not offered by commercial importers. Its ecological specialisation to clear upland streams, its minute adult size, and the relatively inaccessible headwater localities it inhabits explain its absence from hobbyist circles.

For a dedicated enthusiast willing to source the species through scientific or specialist networks, its diminutive size (1.5 in SL) makes a small tank — 10–15 US gal with good current, a sand and pebble substrate, smooth stones, and well-established biofilm growth — adequate for a small group. The fish require clean, cool, well-oxygenated water reflecting its highland origin: temperature around 64–75 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. High flow and surface agitation are important to prevent the stagnant conditions this species never encounters in nature.

Diet should be primarily algae-based — spirulina tablets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and ideally the growth of natural periphyton on flat stones. Tankmates should be small, non-aggressive, and comparable in ecological requirements. The species poses no threat to plants or other small fish. Captive breeding has not been documented, so the species is not available through the hobby.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Corumbataia cuestae as Least Concern (2022), assessed by Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) under criteria version 3.1. The IUCN assessment accession is e.T187140A1823719.

Despite this benign global listing, the context gives reason for watchfulness. The Tietê basin is one of Brazil's most heavily urbanised and industrially degraded river systems — the main Tietê channel through greater São Paulo was long one of the most polluted rivers in South America, though recent remediation efforts have improved conditions. C. cuestae persists only in headwater tributaries where catchment land use and water quality are relatively intact.

Deforestation of the Atlantic Forest zone, agricultural runoff, and urban sprawl continue to threaten the small upland streams on which this species depends. Its restricted range within a single river system, combined with the broader pressures on the Tietê watershed, mean that ongoing monitoring of headwater stream quality in São Paulo is important for the species' long-term security. No captive-breeding programme exists, and the species is not present in zoo or public aquarium collections.
