A little-known rheophile from the upper Atrato drainage of western Colombia, Dolichancistrus atratoensis is a small armoured catfish that lives close to the Andean foothills in clear highland streams — a habitat rich in character but sparse in the scientific record. Its Data Deficient status on the IUCN Red List reflects how much remains to be learned about this montane Hypostomine.

Taxonomy & naming

Dolichancistrus atratoensis was originally described by the Danish ichthyologist Georg Dahl in 1960, based on specimens collected from Quebrada La Noche, a small tributary of the upper Río Atrato in the Departamento de Antioquía, near Riosucio in western Colombia. Dahl's description was published in Caldasia (volume 8, number 39, p. 455). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts the combination Dolichancistrus atratoensis as valid, with the original combination Pseudancistrus atratoensis treated as a junior synonym following the placement of this species in Dolichancistrus by Isbrücker in 1980.

The genus Dolichancistrus sits within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, a large radiation of armoured suckermouth catfishes. Dolichancistrus can be distinguished from the closely related genera Leptoancistrus, Cordylancistrus, and Chaetostoma by a combination of characters: the presence of both adipose and anal fins (lost in Leptoancistrus); pectoral-fin spines in adult males that are noticeably longer than those of females and immatures of both sexes (equal between sexes in Cordylancistrus and Chaetostoma); a fully plated snout (naked in most Chaetostoma); and hypertrophied cheek odontodes in mature males that are evertible to more than 90° and recurved distally — a striking feature that distinguishes D. atratoensis from Chaetostoma platyrhynchus, in which the odontodes are evertible only about 30–40° and remain straight.

The species epithet atratoensis is a straightforward Latinisation of the Atrato River, from which the type drainage takes its name. The genus name Dolichancistrus derives from the Greek dolichos (long) and agkistron (hook), meaning roughly 'long Ancistrus', an allusion to the elongated odontodes characteristic of mature males in the genus.

Morphology

Dolichancistrus atratoensis is a small species, reaching approximately 3 in standard length (SL) in adults. Like all loricariids it is encased in bony dermal scutes arranged in lateral series, and the ventral surface is flattened — an adaptation for living in flowing water on hard substrates. The snout is fully plated (distinguishing Dolichancistrus from the naked-snouted Chaetostoma relatives), and the mouth is positioned ventrally as a suctorial disc suited for grazing biofilm from rock and wood surfaces.

The most striking morphological feature of mature males is the greatly elongated pectoral-fin spines, which noticeably exceed those of females and immatures. Males also develop enlarged, evertible cheek odontodes (interopercular bristles) that can be spread outward to more than 90° from the head; these recurved spines are likely used in male–male competition and may assist in lodging the fish within crevices against current. Females and juveniles lack these hypertrophied pectoral spines and carry shorter, non-evertible cheek odontodes.

Detailed colour pattern data for this species are sparse in the literature. The body colouration is presumably brown to greyish-brown with lighter undersides, consistent with other Dolichancistrus and Chaetostoma-group relatives from similar habitats, though no published colour description is available for wild-caught specimens.

Habitat

The type locality — Quebrada La Noche, a tributary of the upper Río Atrato near Riosucio, Antioquía — lies at approximately 1804 ft elevation in the western Andes of Colombia. This places D. atratoensis in the cool-to-warm transitional zone below the true cold-water Andean streams but well above the hot lowland floodplains; the type elevation suggests water temperatures in the range typical of Andean foothill streams, though no field measurements have been published for this species.

The upper Atrato drainage runs through a biodiverse but geologically and hydrologically distinct region: the Atrato is one of few major Colombian rivers draining westward into the Caribbean rather than eastward into the Orinoco or southward into the Amazon. The watershed is characterised by high annual rainfall, forested catchments, and swift clear-water streams over rocky or gravelly substrates — conditions that broadly favour rheophilic suckermouth catfishes. The genus Dolichancistrus as a whole is reported to be facultatively capable of aerial respiration, a trait that may aid survival during brief exposure or low-oxygen episodes in fast-moving microhabitats.

No aquarium or field data on water chemistry specific to this species have been published. Based on its Andean foothill origin, the water is likely soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral, and cool relative to lowland Loricariidae.

Feeding

Dolichancistrus atratoensis has not been kept or studied in captivity, and no direct feeding observations are available. By analogy with other members of the Ancistrini and with other Hypostomines occupying similar montane stream habitats, the diet almost certainly centres on periphyton — the biofilm of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and organic detritus that coats hard substrates in clear, flowing streams. The suctorial, ventrally placed mouth and plated snout are morphological expressions of this grazing lifestyle, allowing the fish to maintain position against current while rasping biofilm from rock surfaces.

Opportunistic ingestion of aquatic invertebrates, plant material, and fine detritus is probable, consistent with the generalised diet of related Ancistrines. Given the sparse published record, any further characterisation of its diet remains speculative and is not presented here.

Mating

No aquarium observations of courtship behaviour exist for Dolichancistrus atratoensis. The pronounced sexual dimorphism — elongated pectoral-fin spines and evertible, recurved cheek odontodes in adult males — strongly implies male–male competition for territories or nesting sites, a pattern widespread across the Ancistrini. Evertible cheek odontodes in this group are commonly used in lateral grappling contests and in anchoring within crevices to resist displacement by rivals.

Female choice and mate attraction mechanisms in Dolichancistrus are unknown. In related genera, males holding defended crevice territories attract females through persistence and territory quality rather than elaborate display. Given the absence of aquarium records and the sparse wild data, any further description of mating behaviour would be speculative.

Breeding

Breeding of Dolichancistrus atratoensis has not been reported in aquaria, and no field data on nesting or reproductive biology have been published. Based on the biology of related Ancistrini, cave or crevice spawning with paternal egg-guarding is the presumed reproductive strategy — the pattern that predominates across the tribe and correlates with the territorial behaviour implied by the male's armament.

Given the complete absence of captive records and the species' Data Deficient conservation status, no clutch size estimates, incubation periods, or conditioning recommendations can be offered with confidence.

In the aquarium

Dolichancistrus atratoensis is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. No registered keepers or aquarium observations have been documented in the specialist catfish literature, and the species does not carry an L-number or common name. Wild imports from the upper Atrato have not been recorded in the trade.

For any keeper who might encounter this species, the Andean foothill origin suggests preference for well-oxygenated, moderately cool water with low to moderate hardness and near-neutral to slightly acidic pH, and a tank furnished with smooth rounded stones and moderate flow. A diet of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and biofilm-rich surfaces would represent a reasonable starting point. Because this species is poorly known and potentially restricted in range, responsible sourcing and careful observation would be especially valuable — and any captive breeding observations would constitute a genuine contribution to the literature.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Dolichancistrus atratoensis as Data Deficient in October 2014, reflecting the inadequacy of available distributional and population data to determine its extinction risk at that time. The known range is apparently restricted to the upper Atrato basin in western Colombia — a geographically limited drainage that differs fundamentally from both the Orinoco and Amazon systems with which most aquarium enthusiasts are more familiar.

The upper Atrato region faces significant anthropogenic pressure. Artisanal and illegal gold mining is widespread throughout the Chocó department and Antioquía borderlands, generating sediment loads and mercury contamination that can devastate benthic fish communities in formerly clear foothill streams. Deforestation for agriculture and coca cultivation further degrades riparian cover and destabilises stream hydrology. A species apparently restricted to a single river drainage and documented from a single type locality is inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation, even if population size is currently unknown.

No trade pressure has been identified, and the species is not known from the aquarium market. A reassessment with modern field survey data would be needed to determine whether the Data Deficient status should be upgraded to a threatened category.
