Taxonomy & naming
Dolichancistrus fuesslii was described by Steindachner in 1911 from a single specimen collected in Colombia. Isbrücker transferred it to Dolichancistrus in 1980 (Beaufortia 30(1):44), the placement followed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) and by Fisch-Muller (2003) in the Check List of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (CLOFFSCA). The species has never been redescribed and is known only from its holotype.
The species name is widely regarded as a probable printer error for fasslii — an epithet that would honour the collector August Heinrich Fassl (1876–1921), a German naturalist and butterfly collector who gathered specimens in Colombia during the early twentieth century. The name fuesslii appears in Steindachner's original publication without explanation, and no person named Fuessl is otherwise associated with Colombian ichthyology of that period. The correction has not been formally published, so the name as printed, fuesslii, remains the valid epithet under the Code. The name Dolichancistrus pediculatus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Maximum recorded size is 5 in total length (TL), based on the holotype. Dolichancistrus is characterised within the Hypostominae by an elongated body plan — the genus name encodes this directly (Greek dolichos, long, combined with agkistron, hook). The body is armoured with bony scutes in the loricariid manner. The head is depressed, with a ventrally-placed scraping mouth typical of rheophilic Hypostominae that graze periphyton from rock surfaces in fast water.
No detailed colouration or meristic data beyond the type description are available in the literature consulted. Given that only the holotype is known, comparative morphological accounts drawing on multiple specimens do not exist.
Habitat
Dolichancistrus as a genus comprises Andean fast-water rheophiles, associated with the clear, oxygenated rivers that drain the Colombian and Ecuadorian Andes. Their morphology — compressed elongated body, robust pectoral spines, sucker-like mouth — is consistent with inhabiting cobble and boulder runs in montane or submontane streams.
The precise collection locality of the holotype of D. fuesslii is not specified in the available sources beyond 'Colombia'. No water chemistry, depth, or microhabitat data are recorded. The Colombian Andean drainages historically encompassed systems flowing into the Magdalena, Cauca, Pacific slope, and Orinoco tributaries; which of these the type specimen came from is not documented in the consulted literature.
Feeding
No feeding data exist for Dolichancistrus fuesslii. Based on the genus-level ecology and the scraping mouth anatomy shared by Andean rheophilic Hypostominae, the species is expected to graze periphyton — algae, diatoms, and associated biofilm — from rocky substrate in flowing water. No captive observations are on record.

No mating data are documented for Dolichancistrus fuesslii. The species has not been recorded in the aquarium trade or studied in the field beyond its original collection. General Dolichancistrus biology suggests cave or crevice spawning with territorial males, consistent with Andean rheophilic loricariids of comparable body plan, but nothing species-specific is documented.

No breeding data exist for Dolichancistrus fuesslii in the wild or captivity. Given that the species is known from a single museum specimen with no subsequent records, aquarium breeding observations are not available. No clutch size, incubation period, or parental care mode is on record.

Dolichancistrus fuesslii has no documented trade or aquarium history. The species is not known to have been kept or bred in captivity. Without verified records of the fish being collected and maintained since the type specimen, no husbandry guidance can responsibly be offered. Any fish sold under this name in the trade should be treated with taxonomic caution.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Dolichancistrus fuesslii as Near Threatened (NT) on 30 November 2020. The Near Threatened listing reflects the extreme paucity of information: the species is known only from its holotype, making it impossible to assess current population size or trend with confidence. It is listed from Colombia, where Andean river systems face ongoing pressures from agriculture, hydropower development, deforestation, and urban runoff.
The lack of any confirmed rediscovery since 1911 means the species could be genuinely rare, could occupy an inaccessible or unsurveyed locality, or could in theory be in synonymy with a more recently collected taxon not yet recognised as conspecific. Until the holotype is restudy and field surveys of candidate Colombian drainages are conducted, its conservation status will remain poorly constrained.
