Farlowella colombiensis was described by Retzer and Page in 1997 in the same landmark monograph that redescribed the entire genus: Systematics of the stick catfishes, Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann (Pisces, Loricariidae), Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 148: 1–88. It is a new species in that paper, not a redescription, meaning the 1997 monograph is both the primary authority for the genus revision and the original description for this species. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Farlowella colombiensis Retzer & Page, 1997 as valid, with no synonyms listed.
The type locality is the Río Upia, a tributary of the Meta River in the area of Guaicaramo, Meta Department, eastern Colombia. The specific epithet colombiensis is a simple Latin toponym: from Colombia, referring to the country of the type locality and, in practice, the entire known range.
The genus Farlowella was erected by Eigenmann and Eigenmann in 1889 and named in honour of William G. Farlow (1844–1919), a Harvard botanist known for his work on algae — an allusion to the genus's algae-grazing diet. Farlowella belongs to subfamily Loricariinae within Loricariidae.
Morphology
Farlowella colombiensis reaches a maximum standard length of 6.5 in SL, consistent with the larger end of the genus. The body plan is the defining character of Farlowella as a whole: extreme linear elongation, a stiff bony rostrum projecting forward of the mouth, and a covering of keeled scutes arranged in longitudinal rows that give the fish the texture and profile of a stripped twig.
Ground colour is brownish, with two conspicuous dark lateral stripes running from the rostrum tip through the eye to the caudal peduncle — the pattern that constitutes the genus's primary camouflage mechanism when the fish lies stationary against submerged wood or plant stems. The mouth is positioned ventrally, adapted for scraping surfaces rather than open-water feeding.
Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: breeding males develop a fringe of fine odontodes on the dorsal surface of the rostrum, absent in females. Gravid females are visibly broader through the abdomen. No additional dimorphic characters specific to F. colombiensis are documented.
Habitat
The entire known range of Farlowella colombiensis falls within the Orinoco River basin, specifically the Meta River drainage of eastern Colombia. The Meta is a major left-bank Orinoco tributary that drains the eastern Colombian Andes and flows eastward across the vast Llanos — the tropical savanna floodplain that spans much of eastern Colombia and western Venezuela.
The Llanos rivers are characterised by strong seasonality: the wet season (April–November) brings extensive flooding across the plains, temporarily connecting river channels with floodplain lakes and gallery-forest inundations; the dry season (December–March) concentrates fish into shrinking main channels and remaining pools. Water chemistry in the Meta system and its Llanos tributaries is typically soft to moderately soft, warm (approximately 75–82 °F), and slightly acidic to neutral (pH approximately 6.0–7.0).
The Río Upia, type locality, is a smaller Meta tributary within the eastern Llanos. Like other Farlowella species, F. colombiensis is expected to associate with submerged wood, root tangles, and aquatic vegetation — surfaces colonised by the periphyton biofilm that constitutes the species' food.
Feeding
Farlowella colombiensis is a periphyton grazer: the elongated rostrum positions the underslung mouth precisely against biofilm-covered hard surfaces — submerged wood, roots, and large plant leaves — while the fish scrapes diatoms, algae, and fine organic detritus. This feeding mode is shared by all Farlowella species and reflects the subfamily Loricariinae's specialisation for scraping rather than excavating or filter-feeding.
No diet studies specific to F. colombiensis have been published. Information on diet in the aquarium is extrapolated from congeners: established algal growth on tank surfaces, supplemented with thin slices of blanched courgette (zucchini) or cucumber, sinking spirulina wafers, and algae tablets placed near resting sites. The species is not a wood-eater, and driftwood serves primarily as structural cover and a grazing surface for biofilm rather than as a direct food source.
Mating
No specific courtship observations have been published for Farlowella colombiensis, and the species has not been bred in captivity. Breeding biology is inferred from documented accounts of congeners.
In reproductively active males, rostral odontodes become notably prominent, and territorial behaviour around preferred spawning surfaces has been described in related species. Females approaching breeding condition develop a visibly rounded abdominal profile. Given that this species is essentially absent from the hobby, there are no aquarist observations on which to draw.
Breeding
No captive breeding record exists for Farlowella colombiensis. PlanetCatfish holds no registered keeper or breeding reports for this species, reflecting its virtual absence from the ornamental trade.
Breeding information is drawn entirely from documented accounts of congeners such as F. acus and F. gracilis. Farlowella species are surface-egg depositors: the female lays an adhesive clutch on a flat, hard surface — glass, smooth stone, or a broad-leaved plant — and the male takes sole responsibility for brood care, fanning the eggs to maintain oxygenation and removing any that fungus. Incubation in congeners at 77–81 °F lasts roughly 7–10 days. Fry require established biofilm from the earliest stages of free swimming.
Conditioning adults on a diverse vegetable-rich diet, maintaining soft, slightly acidic, pristine water, and providing flat smooth surfaces as potential spawning sites would be the logical starting approach for anyone obtaining this species.
In the aquarium
Farlowella colombiensis has no established presence in the hobby. PlanetCatfish records no registered keepers and no aquarium images, and the species is not known to appear in trade. Any information on its aquarium husbandry is therefore projected from the well-documented care requirements of its congeners — primarily F. acus, F. gracilis, and F. knerii.
As a Llanos-drainage species, it would be expected to tolerate soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at 75–82 °F — parameters consistent with the Meta River system. Like all twig catfishes, it would require a mature, well-filtered aquarium with low dissolved waste, peaceful tankmates that do not outcompete it for food or harass its fragile body, and ample biofilm-covered surfaces for grazing.
The VU conservation status adds a further layer of consideration. Any specimen that appeared in trade would most likely be wild-caught, and responsible sourcing documentation would be warranted. The very restricted range of the species in a threatened landscape argues for caution about wild collection until the population status is better understood.
Conservation
Farlowella colombiensis is the only species in its genus that the IUCN Red List has assessed as threatened. It is listed as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), assessed on 17 October 2020. This dual B-criterion listing is significant: it means both the extent of occurrence (EOO, the total area encompassed by an outer boundary of all known records) and the area of occupancy (AOO, the area actually inhabited) are estimated to fall within the thresholds for Vulnerable, and that a continuing decline in habitat quality is inferred — criterion (iii) specifically identifies area, extent, or quality of habitat as the metric in decline.
The restricted range in the Meta River drainage of the Colombian Llanos is the core conservation problem. The eastern Colombian Llanos have undergone rapid agricultural transformation over the past several decades: cattle ranching, soy and palm-oil cultivation, and associated drainage, sedimentation, and water extraction from Llanos tributaries have degraded riparian habitats and altered seasonal flood dynamics. These pressures affect the gallery-forest inundations, wood-debris accumulations, and rooted aquatic vegetation that twig catfishes depend on for food and shelter.
The species' narrow geographic footprint means that even localised habitat loss in the Meta watershed translates directly to a proportionally significant population impact. No population size estimate or trend data have been published. Conservation action would logically begin with surveys to characterise the full extent of the species' range and the degree of habitat degradation in occupied river segments, followed by protections for riparian gallery forest in key Meta tributaries.
