Taxonomy & naming
Farlowella curtirostra was described by George S. Myers in 1942 on the basis of material from Venezuela. It belongs to the speciose genus Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889, which currently encompasses more than 30 valid species placed in the subfamily Loricariinae of the family Loricariidae — the largest family of catfishes. The genus is defined by an extremely elongated, depressed body, a pointed rostrum, and a series of lateral scutes that give the fish its characteristic twig-like silhouette. Within Farlowella, species-level taxonomy has historically been complicated by morphological conservatism and geographic variation; several undescribed forms are known from museum collections. Myers chose the specific epithet curtirostra from the Latin curtus (shortened, curtailed) and rostrum (beak or snout), a direct reference to the proportionally shorter snout that distinguishes this species from longer-snouted relatives such as F. acus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats F. curtirostra as a valid species. No subspecies have been formally recognised, and no junior synonyms are currently listed for this name.
Morphology
Like all members of the genus, F. curtirostra is extraordinarily elongated and laterally depressed, with a body cross-section that is essentially rectangular in outline. The rostrum is pointed but noticeably shorter relative to head length when compared to sympatric congeners, which serves as the primary diagnostic character. The mouth is small, inferior, and adapted for rasping algae and biofilm from submerged wood and leaf litter. The body is covered in rows of keeled scutes; the lateral line runs along a ridge of particularly prominent plates. Coloration is cryptic — a mottled warm brown to grey-brown, often with fine dark and pale speckling that replicates the texture of a dry twig or waterlogged stem. The caudal fin is forked, with the lower lobe often somewhat more elongated and filamentous in adult males. Maximum recorded standard length is approximately 6–6.5 in, though most wild individuals and aquarium specimens are somewhat smaller. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; mature males develop odontodes (bristle-like dermal denticles) on the cheeks and the leading edges of the pectoral spines, and tend to have a slightly broader head profile than females of comparable size.
Habitat
Farlowella curtirostra occupies slow-flowing to almost still lowland streams, flooded forest margins, and backwater lagoons in Venezuela and adjacent Colombia, primarily within the Orinoco drainage. It shows a strong preference for shallow, heavily vegetated zones where submerged roots, fallen branches, and aquatic macrophytes provide both feeding substrate and shelter. Water conditions in its native range are warm — typically 75–84 °F (75–84 °F) — and may be either slightly acidic and tea-stained (in blackwater tributaries rich in humic acids) or near-neutral in clearer rivers. Dissolved oxygen is typically adequate near the surface, but the species is not found in fast, highly oxygenated rapids; its delicate physique suits it to gentle currents. Like most Farlowella, it relies almost entirely on crypsis against woody debris rather than active escape from predators, remaining motionless for extended periods during the day. It is generally found at depths of 2–10 ft and may move into shallower inundated areas during the wet season.
Feeding
Farlowella curtirostra is an algivore and periphyton grazer. The inferior, sucker-like mouth with its fine teeth is well suited to scraping aufwuchs — the community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and associated organic detritus — from submerged woody substrates, leaf surfaces, and macrophyte stems. In the wild, this diet is supplemented by fine organic particles settling onto surfaces. Observations of related congeners suggest that F. curtirostra rarely if ever actively hunts invertebrates, though incidental ingestion of small meiofaunal organisms embedded in biofilm cannot be excluded. In the aquarium, specimens accept sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber, spinach), spirulina-based foods, and commercial sinking granules with a high vegetable content. Unlike some more robust loricariids, Farlowella species are not powerful raspers and should not be expected to eliminate heavy algae growth from glass; they are best thought of as biofilm specialists. Feeding largely takes place at night or during dim-light periods.
Mating
Specific observations on the reproductive behaviour of F. curtirostra in the wild are sparse in the published literature. Breeding biology is inferred from aquarium observations of the genus more broadly and from data on close relatives. Like other Farlowella, the species is presumed to be a substrate-spawning, paternal guarder. Males select a flat, smooth surface — typically a broad leaf, a length of driftwood, or a piece of slate — and perform courtship by closely following and nudging the female. Spawning results in a compact adhesive clutch of eggs deposited directly onto the chosen surface. The male then fans the clutch with his pectoral fins and body movements to maintain oxygenation, physically excluding females and other fish from the clutch site. Fertilisation is external. The degree to which pair bonds persist beyond a single spawning event is unknown. Breeding activity in the genus appears to be influenced by slight drops in temperature and increases in water flow, possibly simulating the onset of the dry season when water levels drop and streams clear.
Breeding
Aquarium breeding of F. curtirostra has been achieved by hobbyists, though detailed published accounts are limited. Conditioning with a varied diet of high-quality vegetable matter, live or frozen small invertebrates, and frequent partial water changes is the standard recommendation. Gradually lowering the water temperature by 36–37 °F (3–5 °F) over several weeks and increasing surface agitation with a spray bar or airstone can trigger spawning behaviour. A clutch typically comprises 30–80 eggs, though this estimate is drawn primarily from congeners and may vary. Eggs are yellowish-cream, oval, and adhesive. The male guards and fans the clutch, which hatches in approximately 7–10 days at typical aquarium temperatures (77–81 °F / 77–81 °F). Newly hatched larvae are equipped with a large yolk sac and cling to the substrate; they begin free-swimming and grazing on biofilm surfaces within a further few days. The male's guarding behaviour typically ends once larvae are free-swimming. First foods for juveniles include powdered spirulina, microfauna on aged wood, and fine commercial fry foods.
In the aquarium
Farlowella curtirostra is an undemanding species in terms of temperament but demands careful attention to water quality and diet. A minimum tank volume of 20 US gal is appropriate for a single specimen or a small group; a longer footprint is preferable to a tall tank, as this is a mid-level to surface-zone species. Decor should include ample driftwood, twisted roots, and broad-leaved plants such as Echinodorus or Anubias to provide both grazing and hiding surfaces. Water temperature should be maintained at 73–82 °F (73–82 °F), pH 6.0–7.5, and general hardness below 15 °GH; soft, slightly acidic water is ideal. Strong, turbulent flow is not necessary and may stress these fish — moderate, gentle circulation is preferable. Farlowella are very peaceful and can be combined with small characins, dwarf cichlids, and other non-aggressive species; avoid robust, boisterous tankmates that may outcompete them for food or nip their delicate fins. The species is sensitive to poor water quality, so frequent partial water changes and a well-cycled filter are essential. Because the fish is cryptically coloured and essentially motionless during the day, owners must ensure food reaches the substrate near favoured resting spots.
Conservation
Farlowella curtirostra has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as a distinct species, and its status is therefore listed as Not Evaluated (NE). Data on wild population trends are sparse. Its range in the Orinoco basin encompasses areas subject to varying degrees of land-use change, including agricultural expansion, deforestation of gallery forests, and localised water pollution from gold mining operations — pressures that are known to affect other loricariid catfish in the region. The species' dependence on intact riparian vegetation and slow-flowing, well-vegetated micro-habitats makes it potentially sensitive to habitat simplification, though without systematic surveys its resilience or vulnerability cannot be quantified. The trade in wild-caught Farlowella is modest and probably does not constitute a significant population pressure. Aquarium breeding reduces reliance on wild harvest, though it is not yet widespread for this species specifically. In the absence of formal assessment data, precautionary conservation of its riparian forest habitats in Venezuela and Colombia represents the most relevant protective measure.
