Taxonomy & naming
Guyanancistrus nassauensis was formally described by Jan H.A. Mol, Sonia Fisch-Muller, and Raphaël Covain in 2018 within a wide-ranging integrative revision of the genus Guyanancistrus published in PLOS ONE (volume 13, issue 1, article e0189789). The species belongs to what Fisch-Muller and colleagues termed the Guyanancistrus brevispinis complex — a cluster of closely related small loricariids endemic to Guiana Shield drainages.
The genus Guyanancistrus is itself nested within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, one of five subfamilies within Loricariidae (Armbruster, 2004). The 2018 paper applied an integrative framework combining morphological characters with molecular data to resolve species limits within this complex, distinguishing G. nassauensis from its closest relative G. brevispinis by subtle but consistent differences in meristics and distribution.
The specific epithet nassauensis is a Latinised toponym: it refers directly to the Nassau Mountains (Nassau Gebergte) of eastern Suriname, the only region from which the species is currently known. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Guyanancistrus nassauensis Mol, Fisch-Muller & Covain, 2018 as the valid combination.
Morphology
Adults reach a maximum recorded length of approximately 2.5 in standard length (SL), placing G. nassauensis among the smaller loricariids. Like all members of Guyanancistrus, the body is encased in interlocking bony scutes arranged in the typical loricariid pattern. The genus is characterised by relatively short, stout spines and features diagnostic within the Ancistrini.
Detailed external morphology distinguishing G. nassauensis from G. brevispinis was documented in the 2018 revision but involves meristic characters that are difficult to assess without specimens in hand. When viewed from above the body is moderately depressed and broadly fusiform, typical of current-dwelling loricariids that press close to rocky substrates. Odontode development on the interoperculum and cheeks reflects the standard Ancistrini pattern, with males typically bearing more elaborate odontodes than females, though sex-specific dimorphism data for this species remain sparse in the literature.
Habitat
The type locality is Paramaka Creek, a medium-sized shallow stream on the eastern drainage of the Nassau Mountains within the Marowijne (Maroni) River basin, Suriname. Field notes from the collection event describe a stream 3–7 metres wide and less than 19.5 in deep over a rocky substrate, bordered by terra firme rainforest. The water was transparent and soft: pH 6.26, conductivity 24.2 µS/cm, temperature 74 °F.
These conditions — cool, oligotrophic, highly transparent blackwater or clearwater over rock — are characteristic of Guiana Shield headwater systems and stand in sharp contrast to the turbid, sediment-laden waters that gold and bauxite mining produces. G. nassauensis was collected syntopically with Harttiella crassicauda and, in upper plateau portions of Paramaka Creek, with its close relative G. brevispinis.
The IUCN assessment estimates an extent of occurrence (EOO) of approximately 179 mi² and an area of occupancy (AOO) of approximately 89 mi² (best estimates), with only five known localities falling within two threat-based locations. The species does not appear to occur in the lower Maroni drainage or in adjacent French Guiana, based on expert assessment by J. Mol (pers. comm. 2021).
Feeding
No specific feeding data have been published for G. nassauensis in the wild. Based on general Guyanancistrus biology and the rocky, current-swept habitat it occupies, the species almost certainly feeds primarily on epilithic biofilm — the thin layer of diatoms, cyanobacteria, algae, and organic detritus that colonises rock surfaces in fast-flowing Guiana Shield streams. Loricariids of the Ancistrini tribe typically possess fine, multi-cusped teeth well suited to scraping this material from hard substrates.
Given the extremely low conductivity and nutrient-poor character of Paramaka Creek, prey invertebrates are likely scarce, and biofilm grazing probably constitutes the primary energy source. Aquarium dietary requirements are unknown; the species has not been established in captivity.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been observed or documented for G. nassauensis, either in the wild or in captivity. By analogy with related small Ancistrini loricariids, cave or crevice spawning with some degree of male parental care is the most plausible reproductive mode, but this remains speculative. The rocky substrate of Paramaka Creek would provide ample crevice sites.
Breeding
No breeding data exist for this species. It has not been successfully maintained or bred in aquaria. The combination of its restricted range, Endangered status, extreme habitat specificity, and absence from the ornamental trade means that captive breeding programmes are not currently in place. Any future attempt would require careful collection permitting from Surinamese authorities and specialist facilities capable of replicating the very soft, cool, oligotrophic conditions of its native streams.
In the aquarium
Guyanancistrus nassauensis is not available in the aquarium trade and is unlikely to appear in it in the foreseeable future. It has not been maintained in public aquaria or specialist collections to any documented degree. The species' hyperendemic status, restricted wild population, and Endangered classification under IUCN criteria mean that any collection for ornamental purposes would require stringent assessment of impact on the wild population.
For reference, if specimens were ever maintained, the habitat data suggest that very soft, acidic, cool, well-oxygenated water — pH around 6.0–6.5, temperature approximately 72–75 °F, conductivity below 30 µS/cm, strong current, and rocky substrate — would be necessary minimum requirements.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Guyanancistrus nassauensis as Endangered (EN) under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) in October 2020 (published 2021), assessed by J. Mol and S. Fisch-Muller. The assessment reflects both a restricted extent of occurrence and ongoing decline in the quality of its habitat attributable to mining activity.
The Nassau Mountains are the site of significant bauxite deposits and active gold-mining operations. Mining causes sediment mobilisation and deposition, altered stream hydrology, and chemical contamination — all of which are acutely adverse for a small, epilithic loricariid adapted to transparent, oligotrophic water over clean rock. The majority of the species' estimated range is affected by existing or proposed extractive operations, and slow but significant habitat decline is projected to continue.
No formal conservation measures are in place for G. nassauensis. The species is not commercially traded and has no established ex-situ population. Assessors note that the species could qualify for downlisting if future surveys reveal a broader distribution, but at present the available evidence supports the Endangered listing. Its recent description (2018) means it was absent from all earlier conservation planning frameworks.
