Guyanancistrus brownsbergensis is a small, Endangered loricariid known from a single stream — Kumbu Creek — within the Brownsberg Nature Park in Suriname's Saramacca River basin. Its entire global range fits within one protected area on the Guiana Shield, a restriction that makes habitat integrity within that reserve the whole of its conservation story.

Guyanancistrus brownsbergensis was formally described by Mol, Fisch-Muller, and Covain in 2018 in PLOS ONE (volume 13, number 1, article e0189789), as part of an integrative systematic framework evaluating the genus Guyanancistrus with emphasis on the G. brevispinis complex. The type locality is Kumbu Creek above Kumbu Falls, Saramacca River basin, Brownsberg Nature Park, Brownsberg Mountains, Brokopondo district, Suriname (4°56'57"N, 55°11'07"W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, species ID 75188) recognises the valid name Guyanancistrus brownsbergensis Mol, Fisch-Muller & Covain, 2018.

No L-number has been assigned to this species, and no common name is on record — reflecting its complete obscurity in the ornamental fish trade. No registered keepers or spotters exist in the PlanetCatfish database, and only one specimen photograph is on file.

The genus Guyanancistrus combines 'Guyana' (the Guiana Shield biogeographic province shared by Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana, and northern Brazil) with the suffix -ancistrus, derived from the related genus Ancistrus (itself from Greek ancistros, fish-hook). The species epithet brownsbergensis is a toponym: it refers directly to the Brownsberg Nature Park and the Brownsberg mountain range where the species was collected. The 2018 description was integrative, combining morphological and molecular data to delimit species within the G. brevispinis complex — a methodological approach that has become standard for cryptic loricariid lineages on the Guiana Shield.

Morphology

Guyanancistrus brownsbergensis is a small loricariid; the maximum recorded size is 2.5 in standard length (SL), placing it in the size class of small to medium ancistrine plecos rather than the large Pseudacanthicus or Pterygoplichthys. The dorsal fin has seven rays; the anal fin has six branched rays — a count that falls within the typical Hypostominae range.

Detailed morphological description is available in the 2018 PLOS ONE paper by Mol, Fisch-Muller, and Covain. The integrative framework used in that study emphasises both external morphological characters and molecular markers to distinguish G. brownsbergensis from its congeners within the G. brevispinis complex, suggesting that simple external appearance may not reliably separate species in this group without molecular data.

Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species. In the wider Hypostominae, males typically develop enlarged odontodes on the pectoral-fin spines and interopercular region during breeding condition; these characters are expected but not confirmed in G. brownsbergensis given the species' extreme rarity in captivity and very limited field-collected material.

Habitat

The only confirmed locality for Guyanancistrus brownsbergensis is Kumbu Creek, specifically the upper reach above Kumbu Falls, within the Brownsberg Nature Park, Brokopondo district, Suriname. The creek drains into the Saramacca River basin. The type locality coordinates (4°56'57"N, 55°11'07"W) place it in the Brownsberg mountain range of the Guiana Shield — an ancient Precambrian plateau running across interior Suriname.

The Guiana Shield stream environment typical of sites in this region is characterised by fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over rocky substrate; water is generally soft and acidic, coloured by dissolved organic matter (tannins) leaching from forest litter; and transparency varies with rainfall. Specific measured parameters for Kumbu Creek are not recorded in the cache data.

No other drainage records exist for the species. The entire known range is contained within a single creek inside a single protected area, making the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy both extremely small by any standard — a key factor in the IUCN Endangered assessment.

Feeding

Breeding

Within Hypostominae broadly, cave-spawning with paternal brood care is the predominant reproductive mode. Males defend a cavity, females deposit adhesive eggs on the interior walls, and the male fans and guards the clutch until the fry disperse. Whether this applies specifically to G. brownsbergensis cannot be confirmed from existing data; it should be treated as a working inference only.

In the aquarium

Guyanancistrus brownsbergensis is not present in the ornamental fish trade and is not kept in aquaria in any documented case. No husbandry guidance can be derived from captive experience; the following represents general extrapolation from closely related Guiana Shield loricariids of similar size.

A small specimen of 2.5 in SL would be manageable in a 15–20 US gal aquarium. Guiana Shield stream conditions — soft, acidic water (pH roughly 5.5–6.8), temperature around 75–81 °F, high oxygenation, strong flow over rocky substrate — would represent a first approximation for care. Driftwood and smooth river rocks as substrate are appropriate; bright lighting should be avoided in favour of dimmer, tannin-stained conditions matching the forest-stream environment.

Given the IUCN Endangered status of the wild population, any future interest in captive keeping should be directed toward conservation-breeding efforts rather than ornamental trade collection from the wild. The entire wild population exists within a single creek inside a single protected reserve; any collecting from that population would add pressure to an already critically restricted gene pool.

Conservation

Guyanancistrus brownsbergensis is assessed as Endangered (EN) by the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 20 October 2020. The Endangered listing reflects the species' acutely restricted range: the entire known global population occupies one creek — Kumbu Creek — within one protected area, the Brownsberg Nature Park in Suriname.

The Brownsberg Nature Park is a legally protected reserve covering approximately 84,000 hectares on the Brownsberg plateau in Brokopondo district. The protection status of this reserve provides the species with a degree of formal safeguard against development within its immediate habitat. However, protection does not eliminate all threats: mining activity (gold and bauxite mining are significant industries in interior Suriname), upstream land-use change affecting water quality and flow, and the inherent fragility of an extremely small population confined to one stream all represent ongoing risks.

A species restricted to a single stream is intrinsically vulnerable to stochastic events — drought, pollution incident, invasive species introduction, or any physical disruption of that one drainage. The effective population size is unknown, and no population surveys have been published in the cached sources beyond the initial description.

The single-site, protected-area distribution means that the conservation of G. brownsbergensis is entirely bound to the health and integrity of Brownsberg Nature Park and of Kumbu Creek specifically. Monitoring of water quality and habitat condition within the park is the most immediate conservation need for this species.
