Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus is a whiptail catfish like no other — instantly recognisable by its swollen, knob-tipped rostrum and its diamond silhouette viewed from above. Described by Rudolf Kner in 1853 from the Rio Guaporé in Brazil, this monotypic genus carries one of the most unusual reproductive strategies in the entire family Loricariidae: the male broods a clutch of eggs attached to his greatly enlarged lower lip, ventilating them continuously with slow mouthpart movements until they hatch. It lives buried in, or resting motionlessly on, sandy riverbeds across a broad arc of South American drainages — yet it remains genuinely uncommon in the hobby, partly because acclimatisation after import is notoriously delicate.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus was originally described by the Austrian ichthyologist Rudolf Kner in 1853 in the Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften in Wien (volume 6, p. 92 [28], Plate 7, figures 2a–c), under the basionym Hemiodon acipenserinus, from a specimen collected at the Rio Guaporé, Rondônia, Brazil. The lectotype (NMW 46139) was selected by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1974 (Beaufortia 22[290]:204), who also erected the current genus name Hemiodontichthys and formally removed the species from the older genus Hemiodon. Because the species was originally placed in Hemiodon rather than the current genus, the authority is cited with parentheses: (Kner, 1853).

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS, updated June 2026) accepts Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus (Kner, 1853) as the valid name, with Hemiodon acipenserinus Kner, 1853 as its basionym. No additional synonyms are recognised. The genus is currently monotypic — H. acipenserinus is its sole species — and is placed in subfamily Loricariinae of the family Loricariidae (order Siluriformes) following Ferraris (2003) and Armbruster (2004).

FishBase records a taxonomic note that the species was redescribed by Le Bail et al. (2000) in the context of the fishes of French Guiana. The species epithet refers to the sturgeons of the genus Acipenser, to which the fish bears a superficial resemblance in its elongated snout profile, as noted by Seriously Fish.

Morphology

Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus is a moderately sized whiptail catfish, reaching a maximum of 5.5 in standard length (SL) per Ferraris (2003) as cited in FishBase; Seriously Fish quotes 5.5 in SL and PlanetCatfish 5.5 in SL, and the figures are essentially concordant. The body is strongly depressed and tapers to a narrow caudal peduncle, but it is the head shape that sets this species apart from all other loricariids: the rostrum (snout) is uniquely swollen and rounded at the tip — a prominent fleshy knob — giving the fish its common names 'Pinocchio whiptail' and 'knobnose whiptail'. When viewed from directly above, the head and pectoral-fin base form a distinctive diamond or rhombus shape, visible in any good photograph and diagnostic at a glance.

The body is covered in typical loricariid bony scutes, but the head and pectoral fins conspicuously lack the pronounced odontodes (hair-like bristles) present in many other Loricariinae. Colouration is cryptic: pale grey-brown to sandy tan dorsally, finely mottled to match sandy substrate, with a whitish belly.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, centred on the mouthparts. In mature males the lower lip becomes greatly expanded and fleshy — the 'labial veil' — and the teeth of males are described as spoon-shaped (spatulate), whereas females and juveniles have pointed teeth. The labial veil enlarges further when a male is approaching or in spawning condition, making it a reliable indicator of reproductive readiness. Females lack this hypertrophied lip structure and are generally plumper through the body when gravid.

Habitat

The Catalog of Fishes (updated June 2026) places the distribution of H. acipenserinus in the Rio Madeira drainage and Amazon River basin, as well as the Essequibo, Paraguay and Oiapoque (Oyapock) drainages and coastal rivers of northern Brazil, covering Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana and Peru. FishBase additionally lists the Amazon, Essequibo, Oyapock and Paraguay River basins; PlanetCatfish expands this further to include the Nanay (a blackwater tributary of the upper Amazon near Iquitos) and the La Plata basin via the Paraná and Paraguay.

The species is exclusively associated with sandy substrates, in both clear and white-water habitats. FishBase's biology note states that it 'lives on sandy bottom where it feeds on worms and micro-crustaceans' and that the genus is capable of facultative air-breathing — an adaptation found widely in loricariids that occupy the warm, organically enriched, occasionally hypoxic conditions of floodplain sandbars and river margins.

In the aquarium, Seriously Fish emphasises that a soft, fine sand substrate is not optional but essential to the species' welfare: the fish buries itself in the sand as camouflage and will be chronically stressed if forced to rest on gravel or bare glass. Well-oxygenated, gently flowing water at 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.0 and soft to moderately hard chemistry (2–12°H) best replicates the natural environment.

Feeding

In its natural habitat, H. acipenserinus feeds primarily on small aquatic invertebrates — worms, micro-crustaceans, and aquatic insect larvae — encountered on or just beneath sandy substrate surfaces. The oral morphology is not suited for biofilm-scraping or wood-rasping in the manner of Hypostominae; instead the fish sifts substrate and picks invertebrate prey from the sand surface, a feeding style consistent with the shallow, sandy riverbeds it inhabits.

In the aquarium, feeding requires careful attention. The fish is very retiring and will readily be out-competed by active midwater species. Seriously Fish recommends prioritising live and frozen invertebrate foods — bloodworm (chironomid larvae), daphnia, chopped earthworm — as the dietary core, supplemented with sinking dried foods (catfish pellets, wafers) and occasional blanched courgette or cucumber. Food must reach the substrate, as this species will not rise to the surface or pursue food in the water column.

Given the fish's low profile — it does not cling to aquarium walls and rarely visits the upper water column — the physical signs of starvation (a hollow belly visible from the side) may not be obvious until the fish is severely malnourished. The PlanetCatfish Catfish of the Month article for March 2020 (Linder) describes exactly this scenario: a fish lost to starvation whose condition was masked by its benthic posture and heavy armour. Regular target-feeding directly onto the substrate, or feeding in a separate container, is strongly advisable.

Mating

The mating system of Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus is extraordinary among loricariids and was noted already by Kner in the original 1853 description. Rather than depositing eggs in a cave, on wood, or on a flat surface as most loricariid species do, the male of this species broods the egg clutch attached to his greatly expanded lower lip. The eggs are held within the folds of the labial veil and ventilated by continuous slow movements of the mouthparts as the male rests on or moves across the sandy substrate.

Spawning details are not well-documented in the scientific literature, but PlanetCatfish records five hobbyist breeding reports. Seriously Fish notes that spawning occurs at night and that the precise mechanics are unknown, but that a successful spawn is unmistakable: the male is subsequently found bearing a visible cluster of eggs on his lower lip. The dramatically enlarged mouthparts of a male in breeding condition are a clear pre-spawning signal.

Water chemistry and temperature changes appear to trigger spawning readiness. Seriously Fish recommends maintaining a dedicated breeding group with no boisterous tankmates, feeding a high-quality varied diet, and performing large weekly water changes (40–50%) to bring the fish into condition. Once eggs are visible on the male, removing all other fish to minimise disturbance is advised.

Breeding

Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus employs paternal lip-brooding — the male retains the fertilised eggs attached to his labial veil (lower lip) for the entirety of the incubation period. FishBase notes that this brooding period lasts approximately one week, after which the fry leave the parent's protection. Seriously Fish gives a somewhat longer incubation of 10–15 days, stating that the male ventilates the eggs continuously by movements of his mouthparts throughout this period.

Not all males brood reliably. Seriously Fish cautions that some individuals may drop or eat the egg mass early, while others guard consistently through to hatching. If the male retains the eggs to full term, the emerging fry require a further 2–3 days to absorb their yolk sacs before first feeding. At this point they are large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii or microworm.

Fry are sensitive to water-quality deterioration and starvation. Seriously Fish emphasises that rigorous water maintenance and constant access to appropriately sized live foods are essential to reach a reasonable survival rate. The combination of unusual brooding biology and demanding fry care means that captive breeding, while documented (five reports on PlanetCatfish), is not a routine achievement. Patience, a species-only breeding tank, and consistent conditioning effort are the prerequisites for success.

In the aquarium

Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus is a genuinely rewarding species for the specialist hobbyist, but it is unforgiving of the wrong setup or the wrong tankmates. The two absolute requirements are a fine, soft sand substrate of sufficient depth for partial burial, and well-oxygenated water with gentle flow. Without sand, the fish is perpetually stressed; without adequate dissolved oxygen, it declines rapidly — a major factor in the high post-import mortality rate noted by Seriously Fish.

A small group of three to five individuals can be managed in an aquarium of approximately 75 × 30 × 12 in (about 20 US gal) given that the fish are largely inactive and territorial interactions are modest. Water parameters: 75–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately hard (2–12°H). A stringent water-change regime is important — weekly changes of 30–50% are recommended. Other décor can be minimal: some dried oak or beech leaves, a few pieces of smooth-surfaced driftwood for shelter, and perhaps rounded stones for visual effect. Caves are not used and thick plant growth should be avoided as it limits available sand floor and bottom-resting space.

Compatible tankmates are small, peaceful species that occupy the upper water column and will not out-compete the catfish for food: small tetras (e.g., Hyphessobrycon or Moenkhausia species), dwarf cichlids (Apistogramma), and small Corydoras are all cited as suitable by Seriously Fish. Avoid boisterous or fast-feeding species at all cost. Once properly established and acclimatised, the species is actually quite hardy — the difficulty lies almost entirely in the initial import period and in ensuring adequate food delivery to the substrate.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Hemiodontichthys acipenserinus as Least Concern (assessed 8 October 2020, referenced in the 2023 published Red List version). The assessment reflects a wide geographic range spanning multiple major South American drainages — the Amazon and its tributaries (including the Madeira and Rio Guaporé in the type locality region), the Essequibo, Paraguay, and Oiapoque systems — across seven countries, combined with no demonstrated evidence of major population-level decline.

The species occurs across a vast territory in which sandy-substrate habitats are abundant. Unlike specialists of rocky rapids (such as many Hypancistrus and Chaetostoma species), which are acutely vulnerable to dam construction that alters flow regimes and eliminates rocky substrate, H. acipenserinus inhabits sandy riverbeds that are generally more resilient to moderate river engineering. The primary conservation concerns for such habitats are sediment loading from agriculture and deforestation, and large-scale floodplain modification.

The species is collected for the ornamental trade, though its difficulty in acclimatisation and modest hobbyist profile means it is not heavily targeted. Captive breeding is documented but not widespread, so most specimens in the trade remain wild-caught. No protective measures are currently considered necessary given the broad range and apparent population stability.
