Named for the ferocity and stocky build of the North American mustelid, the wolverine pleco is a medium-sized Xingu rapids specialist defined by the hypertrophied, recurved odontodes at the corners of its snout — defensive weapons that look exactly as advertised. One of the later-described species in the diverse genus Hopliancistrus, it carries a hobbyist code with a complicated history: the L017 number was originally applied to a different fish altogether before being reassigned.

Taxonomy & naming

Hopliancistrus wolverine was described in 2021 by de Oliveira, Zuanon, Rapp Py-Daniel, Birindelli, and Sousa in a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Hopliancistrus published in PLoS ONE (volume 16, number 1, article e0244894). The type locality is Pimental Furo da Crente, Rio Xingu basin, Altamira, Pará, Brazil (3°27'30"S, 51°54'41"W). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid name Hopliancistrus wolverine with no synonyms.

The genus Hopliancistrus was erected by Isbrücker and Nijssen in 1989 within Loricariidae: Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini. It is most reliably characterised by the presence of stout, strongly recurved odontodes in the interopercular cheek mass — a defensive armament unique among ancistrine plecos in degree. Males develop the most extreme expression of this trait.

The L-number history of this species is worth noting: the code L017 was originally assigned in the German aquarium press (Stawikowski, DATZ) to a Pseudancistrus from the Rio Xingu, subsequently described as Pseudancistrus asurini, which was later renumbered L067. The code L017 was subsequently applied by the hobby to the unnamed Hopliancistrus now described as H. wolverine. PlanetCatfish's Cat-eLog currently uses L017 for H. wolverine. LDA015 is a separate Das Aquarium coding that also refers to this species.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 5 in standard length — a modest, manageable size compared to many loricariid plecos. The body is covered in the typical loricariid scute armour; coloration is dark brown to near-black dorsally, typically with pale spots or a patterned reticulation on the flanks, and a pale cream to white abdomen. The caudal fin characteristically bears yellow to pale orange pigmentation at the margin, a feature shared with other Hopliancistrus and the basis for early confusion with Pseudancistrus asurini.

The defining morphological feature of the genus is the hypertrophied interopercular odontodes: stout, recurved hooks emerging from the cheek region. Armbruster's key notes that while the genus is putatively defined by three stout recurved odontodes, the actual count in the cheek mass is 1–16, with 1–5 of these being the strongly recurved, hooklike type. This distinguishes Hopliancistrus from Lasiancistrus (which has thin, whisker-like cheek odontodes) and from all other Ancistrini. The caudal peduncle bears five rows of plates, vs. three in Lasiancistrus. Males develop the hypertrophied odontodes most pronouncedly and also show a broader head region; females are distinguishable by a less armoured snout and broader body when gravid.

Habitat

Hopliancistrus wolverine is known from the middle Rio Xingu, from immediately below the Belo Monte village, through the Volta Grande do Xingu to the vicinity of São Félix do Xingu, and also from the Rio Iriri immediately upstream of its confluence with the Xingu to the mouth of the Rio Curua. This is a narrow, rheophilic specialisation — the species inhabits rock crevices, submerged boulders, and cave-like gaps in rapids and fast-flowing stretches of these clear, warm Amazonian rivers.

The Xingu is a clearwater river with remarkably warm, well-oxygenated water and low conductivity. Typical Xingu conditions for rheophilic plecos: temperature 79–86 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, very soft and acidic water, high dissolved oxygen from constant turbulence. The Volta Grande (Great Bend) of the Xingu — the downstream part of this species' range — is the section most severely altered by the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Complex, which has dramatically reduced flow through much of the Volta Grande reach and devastated populations of its endemic fauna.

Feeding

Hopliancistrus wolverine is an omnivore with a strong preference for aufwuchs — the biofilm of algae, cyanobacteria, and organic detritus coating rock surfaces in fast water. The mouth is positioned ventrally with the typical loricariid sucker structure, well adapted to rasping hard, current-swept surfaces. Scotcat notes that in captivity the species accepts a range of vegetable-based foods: lettuce, spinach, cucumber, and vegetable tablets, supplemented by live or frozen invertebrates such as Cyclops, Daphnia, and brine shrimp.

In the aquarium, providing a varied diet that includes spirulina-based algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen invertebrate foods will maintain condition. Like most Xingu plecos, H. wolverine benefits from good current and high oxygen levels at the feeding surface. Sinking foods placed near the current output will find the fish more readily. Unlike wood-eating genera such as Panaqolus or Panaque, this species does not appear to require driftwood as a dietary component, though providing it as structure and enrichment is beneficial.

Mating

Captive breeding of Hopliancistrus wolverine has not been formally documented — PlanetCatfish lists no breeding reports. What is known about reproductive biology is inferred from the genus and from close relatives in the Ancistrini. Males develop the most hypertrophied cheek odontodes and a broader head during maturity, traits that are likely deployed in territorial and courtship contexts. The recurved odontodes serve as defensive weapons and probably play a role in male-male competition for territory and nesting sites in rock crevices.

Male Hopliancistrus are territorial around suitable crevices in rocky rapids. In a well-arranged aquarium with strong current and multiple rock caves, competing males will posture and may engage in contact displays. A ratio of one male to two or more females, with ample cave density, is likely to reduce conflict and improve the chances of conditioning pairs. Females in breeding condition will show a fuller, wider abdomen when viewed from above.

Breeding

No captive spawning has been recorded for Hopliancistrus wolverine. Based on related Ancistrini, the species is expected to be a cave-spawner, with the male selecting and guarding a tight crevice or tube as a spawning chamber. Eggs are adhesive and the male would be expected to provide paternal fan-guarding during incubation. Fry would be expected to emerge as miniature adults and begin feeding on biofilm almost immediately.

To create conditions that might trigger spawning attempts, keepers should provide tight-fitting rock caves or ceramic tubes approximating Xingu crevices, maintain high oxygen levels and significant water movement, and perform regular large water changes with slightly cooler water to simulate seasonal cues. Conditioning on live and frozen foods alongside vegetable matter improves gonadal development. The species' manageable size (5 in SL) makes it one of the more practical Xingu cave-spawning candidates, but its sensitivity to stale or warm, poorly oxygenated water is the main obstacle.

In the aquarium

At 5 in standard length, Hopliancistrus wolverine is a tractable mid-sized pleco for a dedicated Xingu biotope or a well-set-up hillstream aquarium. A minimum of 55–65 US gal is recommended for a group of two to four fish, with strong filtration and a high-flow powerhead or wavemaker to replicate the Xingu current. Rocky terrain with multiple tight crevices is essential — the fish spend much of their time wedged inside or pressed flat against rock faces.

Water must be warm and oxygen-rich: 79–86 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, very soft (less than 5 dH), and high dissolved oxygen. Regular, significant water changes (30–40% weekly) are non-negotiable; the species does not tolerate nitrate build-up and will lose condition quickly in stagnant or polluted water. Scotcat notes the need for frequent water changes to keep these fish in good health.

The species is described as peaceful toward dissimilar tankmates. Small to mid-sized characins, dwarf cichlids, and other peaceful Xingu residents are suitable companions. Conspecific males in a small enclosure will dispute caves, so ensure multiple refuges per male. The hobbyist-coded L017 designation means this fish is occasionally available through specialist retailers and Xingu pleco enthusiasts, though it is not common in mainstream trade. All specimens should be assumed wild-caught from Brazil unless the seller can document captive provenance.

Conservation

Hopliancistrus wolverine has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List — it was formally described only in 2021, and many recently described Xingu endemics have not yet undergone formal Red List evaluation. However, the conservation picture for this species is extremely concerning given its restricted range in the Volta Grande do Xingu.

The Belo Monte Hydroelectric Complex, completed in the early 2020s, reduced average flows through the Volta Grande by approximately 80% during the dry season, transforming the rapids and boulder fields that constitute critical habitat for this and dozens of other endemic Xingu loricariids. Field surveys since dam operations began have found dramatic declines in rheophilic pleco populations throughout the Volta Grande reach. H. wolverine's known range extends from just below Belo Monte village through the Volta Grande — precisely the most heavily impacted section. The species also occurs in the Rio Iriri, which provides a refuge outside the main Volta Grande, but the overall trajectory is deeply worrying.

Given the extreme habitat specialisation, limited range, and the scale of hydrological alteration, this species would almost certainly qualify for a threatened category if formally assessed. The ornamental trade is a secondary concern compared to habitat destruction, but wild collection pressure on an already-stressed population adds to the risk.
