Taxonomy & naming
Hopliancistrus tricornis was formally described by Ike Isbrücker and Han Nijssen in 1989, in Die Aquarien- und Terrarienzeitschrift (DATZ), volume 42, number 9, pages 543 and figures 5–7. The holotype (MZUSP 22007) was collected from Poça de Pedra on the Rio Tapajós, near São Luís, Pará State, Brazil. Extensive paratypes were deposited at IRSNB, MZUSP, and ZMA. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination Hopliancistrus tricornis Isbrücker & Nijssen 1989, distributed in the middle Tapajós River basin (including the lower Jamanxim and Itapacurá drainages) and the Cupari River drainage, Pará State, Brazil.
The genus Hopliancistrus was established in the same 1989 paper specifically to accommodate this species, with the generic diagnosis centring on the hypertrophied, stout, recurved odontodes at the corners of the snout in males. The name translates from Greek as 'weapon hook', a direct reference to these striking armaments. The specific epithet tricornis is Latin for 'three-horned', referring to the three particularly stout recurved odontodes that constituted the original diagnostic count — though subsequent work by de Oliveira et al. (2021, PLoS ONE) clarified that the actual number of hypertrophied cheek odontodes in the genus ranges from 1 to 16, with 1–5 being stout and recurved.
The de Oliveira et al. 2021 revision of Hopliancistrus, which included a full redescription of H. tricornis alongside four newly described species (H. wolverine, H. xavante, H. xikrin, H. munduruku), is the most recent comprehensive treatment of the genus. H. tricornis was confirmed as the Tapajós-system species, distinct from the Xingu-distributed H. wolverine — which carries the older aquarium code L017 — and the smaller spotted H. xikrin. The Tapajós specimens had circulated in the trade as L212.
Morphology
Adults of H. tricornis reach up to 5.5 in standard length (SL), making it a medium-sized loricariid — appreciably larger than many hypancistrine plecos but well within the manageable range for a specialised keeper. The body is covered in the typical loricariid bony scute armour; cross-section is angular rather than rounded, a characteristic of the Ancistrus lineage.
The species is characterised by large yellowish-white spots distributed along the body and dark brown spots on the fins — a bold, high-contrast pattern. The de Oliveira et al. 2021 redescription provides formal distinguishing characters: H. tricornis has four branched rays on the anal fin (versus five in other congeners), a narrow bar-shaped connection strut between the anterior process of the compound pterotic and the main body (leaving a large posterior gap), a pectoral-fin spine length of 25.1–29.9% SL, and the transverse process of the first dorsal-fin pterygiophore sutured to the transverse process of the second pterygiophore.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Breeding males develop the genus-defining feature: extremely stout, strongly recurved odontodes at the corners of the snout, forming a cluster that looks like curved thorns. These interopercular odontodes are much more developed in mature males than in females or juveniles. Males may also be recognised by their broader, more robust head profile and thicker pectoral-fin spines. Females lack the prominent recurved snout odontodes, appearing far less armed.
Habitat
Hopliancistrus tricornis is confined to the middle Tapajós River basin in Pará State, Brazil, including the lower Jamanxim River, the Itapacurá River drainages, and the Cupari River drainage. The Tapajós is a clearwater river — its waters are characteristically clear with low turbidity, moderate hardness, and pH close to neutral, quite distinct from the blackwater of the Rio Negro or the whitewater of the main Amazon stem.
The type locality, Poça de Pedra ('rock pool') on the Rio Tapajós near São Luís, suggests a rocky microhabitat — likely a section with exposed bedrock, large boulders, or boulder fields of the kind typical of the Tapajós at low water. The genus as a whole is associated with rocky, fast-flowing sections of clearwater Amazonian rivers. PlanetCatfish records a temperature range of 73–82 °F for the species, consistent with the Tapajós' thermal regime.
The Tapajós below the Itaituba rapids has been significantly affected by the Belo Monte-related hydropower infrastructure on the Xingu, and by proposals for dams on the Tapajós itself (including the cancelled São Luiz and Jatobá dam projects). These projects would directly affect the rocky-substrate habitats of restricted-range plecos in this system, contributing to the species' Endangered assessment. Its limited distribution — essentially within the drainage basin of a single river system — makes it acutely vulnerable to any catchment-scale alteration.
Feeding
In the wild, Hopliancistrus tricornis is presumed to feed on aufwuchs — the epilithic algae, biofilm, and associated micro-invertebrates that colonise rocky surfaces in clearwater rivers. The Tapajós' clear water allows substantial algal growth on exposed rocks, and the loricariid mouth disc of Hopliancistrus is well-suited to scraping these surfaces. Some detrital material and fine organic particles likely supplement the diet, as is typical for Ancistrini in riverine habitats.
In the aquarium, the species accepts a wide variety of prepared foods. Algae wafers, spirulina discs, and sinking catfish pellets form the core diet. Blanched vegetables — courgette (zucchini), cucumber, spinach, peas — are taken readily and should be offered regularly. The species does not need driftwood in the same way as true xylophages (Panaque, Panaqolus), but providing hardwood in the tank does no harm and offers grazing surface and shelter. Small amounts of protein-rich food (frozen bloodworm, Artemia, Daphnia) can be given one or two times per week and are particularly useful when conditioning animals for breeding. As with most loricariids, sustained overfeeding with protein-rich foods is inadvisable.
Mating
Captive breeding of H. tricornis has not been documented on PlanetCatfish as of 2026, and detailed courtship observations are absent from the literature. However, the genus's morphology provides clear inference about reproductive behaviour: the strikingly hypertrophied, recurved snout odontodes of males are almost certainly deployed in male–male competition, acting as weapons during territorial contests over spawning caves. Similar armed disputes have been described in Ancistrus and other cave-spawning Ancistrini.
Male H. tricornis in breeding condition are immediately identifiable by the prominent hooked odontode cluster at the snout corners. Territories around preferred caves are expected to be actively defended, with rival males being physically displaced. The genus-level rarity of captive breeding attempts means that spawning-trigger conditions remain incompletely characterised; by analogy with other clearwater Tapajós plecos (such as Baryancistrus species), a cycle of large, cool water changes followed by a temperature rise to the upper end of the range (81–82 °F) may simulate the dry-to-wet season transition that triggers reproduction in the wild.
Breeding
No confirmed captive breeding of Hopliancistrus tricornis is recorded on PlanetCatfish, and none appears in the scientific literature. The species is rare in captivity — PlanetCatfish lists no registered keepers as of the most recent data — and the combination of its restricted natural range, Endangered status, and limited trade volume means few hobbyists have ever kept conditioned pairs long enough to attempt a breeding programme.
Based on genus biology and the cave-spawning mode universal to Ancistrini, H. tricornis is expected to be a cave-spawner with paternal brood care: the male selects and defends a suitable cavity, spawning occurs inside with eggs deposited on the cave walls, and the male fans and guards the clutch through an incubation period typical of loricariids at tropical temperatures (estimated 6–10 days at 79 °F, with fry free-swimming several days later). Clutch sizes in related Hypostominae typically range from 20–80 eggs, but this has not been confirmed for the species.
Conservation-motivated captive breeding efforts would be valuable. Successful propagation would reduce pressure on wild Tapajós populations and establish a captive population that could withstand continued habitat deterioration in the natural range.
In the aquarium
Hopliancistrus tricornis is a genuinely rare aquarium fish. It is periodically imported — specimens appear occasionally in specialist European and Brazilian markets under the trade code L212 — but it has never been a mainstream species. Its modest adult size (5.5 in SL, roughly 6.5 in total length) is one point in its favour for the dedicated loricariid keeper: a single adult is manageable in a 120-litre aquarium, and a small group can be kept in 55–65 US gal with adequate cave provision.
Water parameters should reflect the Tapajós clearwater origin: temperature 73–82 °F (optimum around 79 °F), pH 6.5–7.5, and moderately soft to slightly hard water. The species is not a soft-water specialist in the way that some Hypancistrus are, but very hard, alkaline water should be avoided. High water quality and excellent filtration are non-negotiable — the Tapajós is a clean, well-oxygenated river, and H. tricornis will not tolerate chronically poor water.
Hide provision is important. The species needs multiple cave options (smooth-bore PVC pipes, ceramic tubes, or carefully stacked flat rocks forming enclosed spaces) both for stress reduction and as potential spawning sites. Males in breeding condition are aggressive around their cave, and two males should not be kept in a small tank. With females or non-rival species, the fish is peaceful.
Suitable tankmates include other clearwater South American fish: smaller caracins, mid-water cichlids of appropriate temperament, and other Tapajós plecos of non-overlapping ecological roles. The Endangered status and rarity of wild imports make responsible husbandry a meaningful act of conservation.
Conservation
Hopliancistrus tricornis is assessed as Endangered (EN, A3c) on the IUCN Red List (November 2018 assessment), reflecting a projected population reduction driven by ongoing and anticipated habitat loss. The A3c criterion indicates a reduction exceeding 50% projected over three generations, based on declining habitat quality.
The species' entire range falls within the Tapajós River drainage in Pará, Brazil — a watershed that has been under sustained pressure from proposals for large-scale hydropower development. Although the São Luiz and Jatobá dam proposals on the Tapajós were shelved following legal and indigenous rights challenges, deforestation in the Tapajós headwaters, agricultural runoff, and artisanal gold mining (garimpo) continue to degrade water quality and alter the sediment dynamics of the clearwater rocky-bed habitats on which this species depends.
The ornamental trade in H. tricornis is modest and likely not a primary threat, but given the species' small natural range, any collection pressure compounds an already precarious situation. There is no confirmed captive breeding programme as of 2026. Conservation actions recommended by the IUCN assessment include habitat protection, reduction of deforestation in the upper Tapajós catchment, and monitoring of trade volumes.
