A small, rock-clinging loricariid from fast-flowing headwater creeks of the rio Tibagi in southern Brazil, Isbrueckerichthys calvus takes its name — Latin for 'bald' — from a smooth, odontode-free patch on its head. It was described in 2006 alongside a congener from the same Paranapanema drainage and remains a little-known stream specialist.

Taxonomy & naming

Isbrueckerichthys calvus was described in 2006 by Fernando C. Jerep, Oscar A. Shibatta, Edson H. L. Pereira and Osvaldo T. Oyakawa, in a paper presenting two new species of Isbrueckerichthys from the rio Paranapanema basin (Zootaxa 1372: 53–68). The Catalog of Fishes recognises the name as valid (species id 69365).

The genus Isbrueckerichthys belongs to the subfamily Neoplecostominae (tribe Neoplecostomini), a group of small armoured catfishes adapted to flowing waters of the Atlantic and upper Paraná drainages of southeastern Brazil. Note that some database records (including FishBase) place the genus under Hypoptopomatinae; the prevailing classification, and the one followed here, treats Isbrueckerichthys as Neoplecostominae.

The species carries no L-number, having entered the literature through formal description rather than the aquarium trade. No synonyms are in circulation.

Morphology

Isbrueckerichthys calvus reaches about 3.5 in in standard length (the largest measured specimen). It has the small, depressed, armour-plated body typical of the Neoplecostominae, suited to clinging to rock in current.

The diagnostic feature reflected in its name is an area on the head that lacks odontodes — the small dermal denticles that stud the body plates of most loricariids. This 'bald' patch gives the species its epithet, calvus (Latin for 'bald'), and distinguishes it from its congeners.

No data on sexual dimorphism has been published for the species. In many small loricariids, breeding males develop hypertrophied odontodes along the snout or pectoral spines, but this has not been documented for I. calvus.

Habitat

The species is known from Córrego Juruba and ribeirão Água dos Oito, both in the rio Tibagi basin, which drains to the rio Paranapanema within the upper rio Paraná system of Brazil. It is a freshwater, demersal fish of tropical headwater streams.

Field notes from the type material describe a small creek with a rocky bottom of small to medium rocks, loose stones, gravel, and small sandy or muddy pools, flowing through a mosaic of open field, riparian vegetation, and forest. The fish were found along the bottom among rocks and stones, just below small waterfalls — a microhabitat of fast, well-oxygenated, turbulent water. No specific temperature, pH, or conductivity values have been published.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Isbrueckerichthys calvus has been published. As a small rock-dwelling member of the Neoplecostominae, it is presumed to graze the aufwuchs — the film of algae, diatoms, biofilm, and associated micro-invertebrates — from the surfaces of rocks and stones in its fast-flowing creek habitat. Specific gut-content data is not available.

Mating

No data on courtship or mating behaviour has been published for Isbrueckerichthys calvus. No observations specific to this species are available, and none should be inferred beyond the general substrate-oriented reproduction typical of small stream loricariids.

Breeding

No breeding records exist for Isbrueckerichthys calvus, in the wild or in captivity. Clutch size, spawning site, and parental-care behaviour are all undocumented. The species is not present in the aquarium hobby, so no captive-spawning reports are available.

In the aquarium

Isbrueckerichthys calvus is not found in the ornamental trade and has no established husbandry record. No species-specific captive parameters or care guidance can be given without fabrication.

By the nature of its habitat — fast, cool, highly oxygenated headwater creeks over rock — fishes of this type are generally demanding of strong flow and high oxygen if kept at all. These are general inferences from the documented habitat, not tested aquarium requirements for this species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Isbrueckerichthys calvus as Least Concern (LC), with the assessment dated 7 November 2018. CITES and CMS list the species as Not Evaluated, and it is considered harmless to humans.

The Least Concern listing indicates no major range-wide threats identified at the time of assessment. As a headwater-stream specialist of the upper Paraná region, however, the species depends on the continued integrity of small forested creeks, which in southeastern Brazil are locally subject to agricultural land use, riparian clearance, and altered flow.
