A slender, torrent-adapted loricariid endemic to the rio Ribeira do Iguape drainage of southeastern Brazil, Isbrueckerichthys duseni occupies fast-flowing rocky streams in the Atlantic Forest — a habitat as threatened as the fish itself is understudied. It almost never appears in the aquarium trade, and the biology of the genus remains poorly known outside the 2002 taxonomic revision that formally separated it from Hemipsilichthys.

Taxonomy & naming

Isbrueckerichthys duseni was first described by Miranda Ribeiro in 1907 as Hemipsilichthys duseni, on the basis of material from the rio Ribeira do Iguape drainage in Paraná State, Brazil. The species remained in Hemipsilichthys for nearly nine decades until Derijst (1996) erected the genus Isbrueckerichthys to receive the species, placing it in its current combination.

The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS; spid=55147) recognises Isbrueckerichthys duseni as the valid name. A further synonym, Pareiorhaphis duseni, appears in some older literature, reflecting a period when the species was shifted into Pareiorhaphis before the Derijst arrangement was consolidated. The definitive modern treatment is the revision by Pereira and Reis (2002), which reviewed both Hemipsilichthys and Isbrueckerichthys, confirmed the two genera as distinct, and restricted the type locality of this species to the rio Ribeira do Iguape drainage in Paraná.

FishBase places Isbrueckerichthys in subfamily Hypoptopomatinae of Loricariidae. Morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses have sometimes recovered the genus near Neoplecostominae, and its precise subfamilial position remains a point of discussion in the literature — the 2002 revision itself notes the uncertainty. Morphology

Adults reach a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in (SL), making this one of the slightly larger representatives of the genus. The body is elongated and strongly dorso-ventrally compressed in the loricariid fashion, covered with the characteristic overlapping bony scutes that give armoured catfishes their common name. The ventral surface is naked or only partially plated, as is typical in Hypoptopomatinae.

A key diagnostic character noted in the Pereira and Reis (2002) revision is the structure of the teeth: in I. duseni the teeth are bifid, bearing a small but distinct lateral cusp, distinguishing this species from the otherwise similar I. alipionis, whose teeth are simple and lack a lateral cusp. The pectoral-fin spine is proportionally moderate, measuring 17.3–21.4% of standard length — noticeably smaller relative to body length than in I. alipionis (27.4–32.0% SL). Dorsal soft rays number 7; anal soft rays 6, consistent with the genus.

Coloration in life is not well documented in the literature. Body shape and scutation follow the general stream-adapted loricariid plan, presumably with cryptic brown or grey tones suited to rocky torrent substrates. Detailed osteological characters distinguishing the genus from Hemipsilichthys and Pareiorhaphis are given in Pereira and Reis (2002).

Habitat

Isbrueckerichthys duseni is restricted to the rio Ribeira do Iguape drainage in Paraná State, southeastern Brazil — a system that drains the Serra do Mar escarpment and empties into the Atlantic south of São Paulo. The drainage falls within the Atlantic Forest biome, one of the world's most biodiverse and most threatened hotspots.

Within this drainage the species is associated with torrents and fast-flowing rocky runs, habitat described in FishBase as streams with rocky substrate. This rheophilic lifestyle is characteristic of the Neoplecostominae-grade hypoptopomatines that radiated across the Atlantic Forest streams — fish adapted to high dissolved oxygen, strong current, and exposed stone surfaces. Exact water chemistry data for the collection localities of I. duseni have not been recorded in the sources available, but the Ribeira do Iguape system is generally cool, clear, and moderately soft relative to larger lowland rivers.

The upper Ribeira de Iguape and its tributaries support a notably high level of ichthyological endemism, including several loricariid genera found nowhere else. Habitat fragmentation by roads, agricultural clearance, and dam projects has reduced connectivity across this fauna in many parts of its range.

Feeding

The feeding biology of Isbrueckerichthys duseni has not been studied in detail. The ventrally positioned mouth with bifid teeth and the rocky-torrent habitat indicate an aufwuchs and periphyton grazer: the fish almost certainly scrapes algae, diatoms, and associated organic matter from stone surfaces, a foraging mode shared by most loricariids occupying similar fast-water niches in Atlantic Forest drainages.

In the aquarium, if the species were ever kept, the appropriate base diet would be algae-based foods — spirulina wafers, blanched courgette (zucchini), and cucumber — supplemented with biofilm encouraged to grow on smooth stones in well-lit areas of the tank. Protein supplementation is likely not a major dietary need. Specific prey or dietary observations from the wild have not been published.

Mating

No observations of courtship behaviour in Isbrueckerichthys duseni have been published. Across Loricariidae, rheophilic genera typically display some degree of male territorial behaviour around spawning sites — crevices beneath boulders or under rock slabs in the streambed — and it is probable that the genus follows this broad pattern. Morphological dimorphism that would allow reliable sexing in live specimens has not been described in the literature for this species.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Isbrueckerichthys duseni has not been reported in the scientific or hobbyist literature. The species is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, and no clutch size, incubation period, or parental care data are available. By analogy with other small rheophilic loricariids, cavity spawning with some form of paternal egg-guarding is a reasonable expectation, but this remains unverified for the genus.

In the aquarium

Isbrueckerichthys duseni is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it virtually never enters the trade, and there are no established husbandry records. Were specimens to become available, the rheophilic habitat demands strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, and cool temperatures consistent with Atlantic Forest streams. A species-appropriate setup would prioritise smooth and rough stones providing multiple crevices, minimal substrate disturbance, clean water with very low nitrates, and a diet of algae-based foods.

The species' apparent sensitivity to habitat quality and the absence of captive-breeding records mean it is not suitable for the general aquarium hobby at present, and collection from the wild would add additional pressure to an already restricted population in a threatened biome.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Isbrueckerichthys duseni as Least Concern in 2018, with no major threats identified at the time of assessment. The species is restricted to the rio Ribeira do Iguape drainage in Paraná State — a naturally limited range that makes it inherently more vulnerable to localised threats than widespread species.

The Atlantic Forest biome, which encompasses this drainage, has been reduced to roughly 12–15% of its original extent through centuries of deforestation, agriculture, and urbanisation. The Ribeira de Iguape valley retains more forest cover than much of the Atlantic Forest due to its rugged terrain, but road construction, eucalyptus plantations, and small hydroelectric projects continue to fragment stream habitats. Monitoring of small-range Atlantic Forest loricariids remains limited, and any future reassessment should account for ongoing catchment-level degradation even where populations currently appear stable.
