Loricaria coximensis is a small, paedomorphic whiptail catfish known from a fragment of the Rio Coxim barely 500 metres long — a stretch that lies within the operational zone of the Ponte Alta hydroelectric facility in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Critically Endangered and essentially restricted to a single, heavily modified site, it is one of the most geographically constrained vertebrates in the Rio Paraguay basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Loricaria coximensis was described by Rodriguez, Cavallaro and Thomas in 2012 in Copeia (volume 2012, number 1, pages 49–56), from specimens collected in the Rio Coxim at São Gabriel do Oeste, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) confirms the valid combination as Loricaria coximensis Rodriguez, Cavallaro & Thomas, 2012.

The genus Loricaria comprises the whiptail loricariids — characterised by their flattened, elongated body, reduced squamation on the abdomen, and extended caudal filament — and is placed within the subfamily Loricariinae. The original description identifies L. coximensis as the third described paedomorphic species in the genus, characterised by abdominal plates confined to the pre-anal shield and posterior median abdominal area, typically loosely joined or separated by naked areas, with the pectoral girdle mostly naked except for isolated plates near the pectoral fin base and posterior to the gill opening. This arrangement of reduced abdominal armour, with the pectoral girdle largely unplated, distinguishes L. coximensis from most congeners.

Within the four previously known Loricaria sharing this reduced-plating condition — L. holmbergi, L. lundbergi, L. parnahybae, and L. pumila — L. coximensis is separated by meristic counts and morphometrics, particularly a broader head measuring 19.4–21.3% of standard length (SL), against 14.1–19.1% SL in those species.

The species epithet coximensis is a toponym derived from the type locality, the Rio Coxim (coximensis = of the Coxim).

Morphology

Adults of L. coximensis reach approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL), placing it among the smaller species of the genus. The body plan is that of a typical whiptail loricariid: strongly flattened and depressed, wider anteriorly and tapering to a slender caudal peduncle that is extended into a filament in many Loricaria species. The head is notably broad relative to the body, measuring 19.4–21.3% SL — a proportion that distinguishes L. coximensis from the closely related paedomorphic congeners noted in the original description.

The abdominal plating is the most diagnostic morphological feature. Unlike the majority of Loricaria, which have well-developed, tightly arranged abdominal plates extending across the entire ventral surface including the pectoral girdle, L. coximensis has plates restricted to the pre-anal shield and posterior median abdominal area, and these are loosely joined or separated by naked skin. The pectoral girdle is largely naked, with only isolated plates near the pectoral fin base and posterior to the gill opening — a paedomorphic condition retained into adulthood.

The gut contents of one examined specimen consisted entirely of seeds, indicating granivory at least as a component of the diet, consistent with feeding behaviour reported in other Loricaria species. The trophic level is recorded by FishBase as 2.6 ± 0.2 SE.

Habitat

The known range of Loricaria coximensis is extraordinarily restricted: the species has been collected only from the Rio Coxim and a first-order tributary within approximately 500 metres of the powerhouse of the Ponte Alta hydroelectric facility, in the municipality of São Gabriel do Oeste, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The Rio Coxim is a tributary of the upper Rio Paraguay basin in the Pantanal headwater region.

This is a small, lowland tributary river flowing through Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) landscape. The Rio Coxim and its direct tributaries in this reach are characterised by sandy or fine substrate, moderate current, and riparian vegetation typical of Cerrado gallery forest. Water chemistry in Cerrado streams is typically soft to moderately mineralised, slightly acidic to neutral.

The immediate vicinity of the hydroelectric facility powerhouse represents a highly modified section of river: altered hydraulics, changed sediment transport, and direct infrastructure impacts are all expected within 500 metres of such a structure. Whether the species originally occupied a broader range of the Rio Coxim upstream or downstream of the facility, or was always restricted to this short reach, cannot be determined from the available data.

Feeding

Gut content analysis of a specimen of L. coximensis recorded only seeds, placing this individual's diet in the granivorous category — seed consumption has been noted in other Loricaria species and appears to be an occasional or perhaps regular component of the diet in the genus. Loricaria species more broadly are benthic omnivores and detritivores, using their ventral, protractile mouths to process fine organic material, algal films, and loose substrate.

For aquarium purposes, species in the whiptail loricariid group are generally maintained on a varied diet of sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched vegetables, and high-quality sinking pellets. Live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm can be offered as supplementary protein. Unlike the wood-eating Panaque and Panaqolus, Loricaria species do not require driftwood as a dietary staple, though wood and leaf litter in the aquarium may provide beneficial foraging substrate.

Mating

Loricaria belongs to a group of loricariids in which paternal brood care is well documented across multiple species. Courtship in whiptail loricariids typically involves the male inspecting and cleaning a spawning surface — a flat rock, a broad leaf, or similar substrate — and attracting the female to deposit eggs on it. The male then takes sole responsibility for guarding and aerating the egg mass.

No specific courtship observations have been published for L. coximensis. Given its critically endangered status and extreme rarity in both the wild and captivity, detailed behavioural data are not available. Inferences from the broader Loricariinae context suggest the male-guarded spawning pattern described for Loricaria is applicable, but this remains unconfirmed for this species specifically.

Breeding

Loricaria species are paternal egg-guarders: the male positions himself over the egg mass after spawning and actively fans and guards the clutch until the fry are free-swimming. This behaviour has been confirmed in captivity for several Loricaria species, where males are observed pressing the ventral surface against the substrate-attached egg mass and performing regular fanning movements with the pectoral fins.

No confirmed breeding records for L. coximensis in captivity are known. The species is not established in the aquarium hobby, and wild-collected individuals are not in trade. Any future captive propagation effort would be of significant conservation value given the species' Critically Endangered status and its apparent restriction to a single, heavily impacted river reach.

In the aquarium

Loricaria coximensis is not in the aquarium hobby. No trade specimens are known, and the species has not been established in captivity. Any information about aquarium care must therefore be drawn cautiously from the biology of congeners and the general requirements of Loricariinae whiptails.

Whiptail loricariids in general thrive in aquaria with a fine sandy substrate for resting and foraging, gentle to moderate water movement, good oxygenation, and adequate biological filtration. Water chemistry for a Cerrado tributary species would logically fall in the soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral range (pH approximately 6.5–7.5, temperature approximately 75–82 °F). Hiding places among leaf litter, root tangles, or flat stones are typical whiptail preferences.

Given the critical conservation status of L. coximensis, any captive holding or breeding programme would need to be undertaken within an institutional or cooperative framework — not as an ornamental hobby acquisition. The species' potential vulnerability to even modest changes in water quality or flow regime, inferred from its habitat within a hydroelectric facility's operational zone, would need to be factored into any husbandry protocol.

Conservation

Loricaria coximensis is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) under criterion B2ab(iii) by the IUCN Red List, assessed 07 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio), Brazil. This is the highest threat category short of extinction in the wild.

The B2 criterion — restricted area of occupancy with continuing decline in habitat quality — applies directly and unambiguously here. The entire known range of the species consists of approximately 500 metres of river within and immediately adjacent to the operational zone of the Ponte Alta hydroelectric facility on the Rio Coxim, municipality of São Gabriel do Oeste, Mato Grosso do Sul. This is not a precautionary delineation of a small range: it is the complete documented distribution of the species. Whether populations persist undetected elsewhere in the Rio Coxim drainage is unknown; no confirmed records have been published beyond the type locality.

The Ponte Alta facility represents a direct and ongoing threat to the habitat within which this species is known to exist. Hydroelectric operations alter hydrology, sediment dynamics, water temperature stratification, and downstream flow seasonality in ways that affect benthic invertebrate communities, substrate character, and riparian shading — all components of the microhabitat on which a small, specialised benthic loricariid depends. The operational powerhouse zone, with its intake infrastructure, discharge flows, and associated bank modification, is among the most severely altered sections of any small river.

The sub-criterion ab(iii) specifies a projected or inferred continuing decline in the area, extent, or quality of habitat — a threshold easily met when the entire known habitat of a species coincides with an active hydroelectric structure and its immediate hydrological influence zone.

No ex situ conservation programme for L. coximensis is known to exist. Without targeted field surveys to determine the full extent of the population, combined with assessment of habitat condition throughout the Rio Coxim, the conservation outlook for this species remains extremely uncertain. It represents a significant priority for the Brazilian ichthyological conservation community.
