Taxonomy & naming
Loricaria apeltogaster was described by George Albert Boulenger in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1895, part 3, page 528) from Paraguay — no more specific type locality was given in the original description. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Loricaria apeltogaster Boulenger, 1895 as the valid name. No synonyms are recorded in the available sources.
The genus Loricaria, established by Linnaeus in 1758, is the nominotypical genus of the subfamily Loricariinae and of the family Loricariidae. It is separated from the closely related Rineloricaria by its more elaborate, feathered sucker-mouth — a distinction visible in adults and noted by PlanetCatfish as the primary field character distinguishing the two genera. Loricaria species also tend to be larger-bodied on average than Rineloricaria.
The species is referenced in Ringuelet et al. (1967), the classic Argentine freshwater fish catalogue, and treated in the Loricariidae–Loricariinae chapter of the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America (Ferraris, 2003), the primary modern systematic reference for the subfamily.
Morphology
Loricaria apeltogaster reaches approximately 13 in standard length (SL) per FishBase (Ref. 94550); PlanetCatfish records 10 in SL. The discrepancy between sources is noted: the FishBase figure of 13 in SL is used here as the authoritative maximum, likely representing the largest measured adults.
The body is elongated and strongly depressed throughout — the whiptail plan taken to a substantial scale. The head is broad and flat, with the mouth positioned ventrally and bearing the more elaborate, feathered lips that characterise Loricaria relative to Rineloricaria. This difference in oral morphology is visible in mature adults and is the primary external character separating the two genera.
The ventral surface is the feature enshrined in the species name: Boulenger's original diagnosis described the belly and breast as 'naked, or with small stellate shields' — a relatively unarmoured ventral surface compared with the more fully plated congeners. Bony scutes cover the dorsal and lateral surfaces in the typical loricariid fashion.
Sexual dimorphism is consistent with the general loricariin pattern. Adult males develop hypertrophied odontodes on the snout and along the pectoral spines. Females are broader-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Loricaria apeltogaster occurs across the Uruguay, Paraná, and Paraguay river basins — the three major river systems that converge to form the Río de la Plata drainage of southern South America (FishBase; IUCN Red List). This is one of the largest freshwater systems on the continent, ranging from subtropical forests of Misiones province through the Chaco wetlands to the temperate grasslands of Uruguay and northeastern Argentina.
FishBase classifies the species as a temperate freshwater fish and demersal in habit. The genus Loricaria is generally associated with sandy and muddy substrates in slow to moderate current, where whiptail catfishes rest cryptically against the bottom. Population doubling time is estimated at 4.5–14 years (FishBase resilience: low), suggesting relatively slow life-history turnover typical of larger-bodied loricariids.
Facultative air-breathing is recorded for the genus Loricaria (FishBase Ref. 126274), an adaptation that may facilitate survival in the oxygen-variable wetland and floodplain environments that are part of the Paraná–Paraguay floodplain mosaic.
Feeding
FishBase assigns L. apeltogaster a trophic level of 2.3, among the lowest recorded for loricariids, reflecting a diet dominated by fine organic detritus, biofilm, and microalgae scraped from substrate surfaces. The elaborate feathered sucker-mouth of Loricaria relative to Rineloricaria may enhance suction and contact with soft sediment surfaces during feeding.
No species-specific dietary study is available. In the aquarium, diet should centre on sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based pellets, blanched vegetables, and fine organic matter from a mature, biofilm-rich substrate. Given its large adult size, L. apeltogaster will require greater quantities of food than the smaller whiptails, and regular supplementation of the biofilm resource through aged driftwood and leaf litter is beneficial.
Mating
No species-specific mating observations are recorded for L. apeltogaster in the available sources. The reproductive behaviour of large Loricaria species broadly follows the loricariin pattern: males develop conspicuous odontodes and become territorial around cavity or substrate sites during the breeding season, displaying to and competing with rival males.
Females laden with eggs broaden visibly in dorsal profile. The temperate range of the species suggests seasonal temperature cycles — particularly the cooler winters of the Plata system — may be significant in synchronising reproductive readiness.
Breeding
Loricaria apeltogaster is assumed to breed as a cavity or substrate spawner with paternal brood care, consistent with the reproductive mode of Loricariinae broadly and documented in related Loricaria species. PlanetCatfish records no breeding reports for this species specifically.
In the genus Loricaria, breeding involves the male taking up position over or within a chosen site — whether a crevice, cavity, or open sandy hollow — and guarding the adhesive egg mass. The male fans the eggs with his fins for the duration of incubation. Fry are miniature versions of the adults at emergence and begin foraging independently soon after dispersal.
The species' low population resilience (FishBase: doubling time 4.5–14 years) implies relatively slow maturation and reproductive rate, a consideration for any large-scale collection from wild populations.
In the aquarium
Loricaria apeltogaster is a large whiptail catfish with limited recorded aquarium presence — PlanetCatfish notes no images on file and no established hobbyist record for the species. An adult at 30+ cm SL requires a spacious aquarium; a tank of at least 40–55 US gal with ample unobstructed floor area would be necessary to accommodate a single adult comfortably.
Its temperate Plata-system origin means cooler water temperatures than most tropical aquarium fish: 64–75 °F is a reasonable working range. pH near neutral and moderate hardness reflect the mixed-source, large-river conditions of the Paraná–Paraguay–Uruguay system. Well-filtered, well-oxygenated water with moderate to gentle flow suits the benthic lifestyle.
A deep sand substrate is the priority for setup. Large flat stones, smooth driftwood, and modest planting (robust species such as Echinodorus or Sagittaria) can complete the environment. Tankmates should be large enough not to be outcompeted at feeding but should not disturb the substrate-resting fish.
Given limited hobbyist data, this species is best suited to specialists with experience keeping large loricariids in temperate conditions.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Loricaria apeltogaster as Least Concern, with the assessment completed on 16 November 2020. The species' wide distribution across the Uruguay, Paraná, and Paraguay river systems — encompassing parts of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay — underpins this status.
The La Plata drainage faces significant and ongoing pressures: hydroelectric impoundments (including the extensive Itaipu and Yacyretá dams on the upper and lower Paraná), agricultural transformation of floodplains, channel modification, and contamination from agribusiness. The genus Loricaria's low population resilience (doubling time 4.5–14 years per FishBase) means recovery from localised depletion would be slow. At present no evidence of major range decline is documented for this species, but the broad suite of threats across the Plata system warrants continued monitoring.
