A small, fast-water loricariid restricted to a handful of Atlantic Forest streams in Espírito Santo state, Brazil, Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis is assessed as Near Threatened — its narrow endemic range, dependence on cold clear water with intact riparian cover, and the combined pressures of poultry farming, agricultural pesticides, and planned hydroelectric works leave it with very limited margin for error.

Taxonomy & naming

Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis was described by Francisco Langeani in 1990, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 1, number 2, pages 113–120). The type locality is the Rio Jucu, braço sul, locality Vitor Hugo, município de Domingos Martins, Espírito Santo, Brazil. Langeani placed the species explicitly in subfamily Neoplecostominae, and that placement is followed in the primary systematic literature including Ferraris (2003, Checklist of the freshwater fishes of South and Central America). Some classification databases list the genus under Hypoptopomatinae, reflecting an alternative higher-level arrangement; the Neoplecostominae treatment is the one underpinning the original description.

The genus Neoplecostomus Miranda Ribeiro, 1908 is a small, phylogenetically coherent group of rheophilic loricariids endemic to south-eastern Atlantic coastal drainages of Brazil. Within this genus, N. espiritosantensis is distinguished by a combination of morphological characters detailed in the original description. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis Langeani, 1990 as the valid name.

The IUCN assessment (2018) notes that specimens from the Rio Doce drainage provisionally attributed to this species may represent a distinct, undescribed taxon — a taxonomic uncertainty that has potential implications for the species' defined range and conservation status.

Morphology

Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis reaches a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in, as reported in Ferraris (2003) from material associated with Langeani's original description. The body plan is typical of small neoplecostomines: depressed, heavily armoured with overlapping bony scutes, and with a ventral, adhesive mouth adapted for attaching to hard substrate in fast current.

Detailed morphological characters distinguishing N. espiritosantensis from congeners are provided in Langeani (1990) and are not fully restated in secondary sources available for this account. The genus as a whole is characterised by the presence of a complete lateral plate series, well-developed dorsal fin, and the absence of features associated with the more derived loricariine lineages. No adipose fin spine has been noted as a distinguishing character.

No data on external sexual dimorphism are available in the published or accessible secondary literature. The species has not been maintained in captivity, and any dimorphism in odontode development or body shape has not been characterised.

Habitat

Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis inhabits fast-flowing, well-oxygenated, cold, clear streams with rocky substrates and intact riparian vegetation, on the eastern slope of the Serra do Mar in Espírito Santo state. Confirmed records come from the Rio Jucu (type locality and subsequent collections), the headwaters of the Rio Timbuí, and the Rio Reis Magos basin — all small to medium-sized tributaries on the Atlantic slope.

The IUCN assessment (2018) calculated an extent of occurrence of approximately 4,502 mi², reflecting a genuinely restricted geographic range. The species appears to be confined to smaller tributary streams rather than main river channels, favouring upper and middle reaches where gradient, substrate quality, and water clarity are highest. Its dependence on preserved riparian forest for shading, bank stability, and leaf-litter inputs makes it sensitive to catchment-scale land-use change.

The municipality of Santa Maria de Jetibá, within the species' range, is one of Brazil's major centres of poultry production — an industry associated with nutrient loading, antibiotic-contaminated runoff, and ammonia inputs that can severely degrade small stream systems. Deforestation and pasture expansion in the Serra do Mar foothills have increased sedimentation loads in streams where the species is known to occur.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis has been published. By microhabitat and oral morphology, the species is presumed to graze periphyton, diatoms, and fine biofilm from the surfaces of exposed rocks and boulders in riffle habitats — the dietary mode typical of small Atlantic Forest neoplecostomines. The ventral adhesive mouth, combined with a rheophilic lifestyle, is well-suited to rasping biofilm from hard substrates under turbulent flow conditions.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis. The species has not been held in captivity, and no field observations of courtship or territorial behaviour have been published. General patterns in related neoplecostomines suggest that males may defend substrate sites, but this is not confirmed for this species.

Breeding

Reproductive data for Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis are not available. No captive breeding has been reported, and the original species description does not include reproductive information. The species is entirely absent from the aquarium hobby, and no field work targeting its breeding biology has been published.

In the aquarium

Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis is absent from the aquarium hobby and has no record of captive maintenance. The species' restricted endemic range in Espírito Santo state, its dependence on cold, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated clear streams, and its Near Threatened conservation status all make it unsuitable as a subject for collection. No husbandry guidance exists, and no water chemistry, dietary, or tank-size data have been established through captive experience.

Conservation

Neoplecostomus espiritosantensis is assessed as Near Threatened (NT, criterion B1b(iii)) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2021. The Near Threatened category indicates that the species is approaching the threshold for Vulnerable under criterion B (restricted range with continuing habitat decline), though it does not yet qualify as threatened.

The IUCN assessment identifies several converging threats. Agricultural pesticide pollution from intensive farming — particularly the large-scale poultry industry centred on Santa Maria de Jetibá — poses a chemical risk to the clear, cold streams the species requires. Deforestation and cattle pasture on the Serra do Mar slopes increase sedimentation, raising turbidity and smothering the rocky substrates on which the species depends. Small hydroelectric projects have been proposed or studied for the Rio Jucu, and any impoundment of this river would directly affect the type locality and core range.

The taxonomic uncertainty regarding Rio Doce specimens (which may represent a separate species) means the effective range of N. espiritosantensis could be even smaller than current assessments assume. No conservation measures were in place at the time of the IUCN assessment, and the assessment explicitly identifies the need for population surveys, distribution clarification, taxonomic resolution of the Rio Doce population, and monitoring of hydroelectric proposals as research priorities.

Given its endemism to a small, heavily modified region and the breadth of unmitigated threats, N. espiritosantensis warrants close monitoring and may be a candidate for upward reassessment if habitat degradation continues.
