Neoplecostomus bandeirante was formally described by Fábio Foresti Roxo, Cláudio Oliveira, and Cláudio Henrique Zawadzki in 2012 in Zootaxa (volume 1757), along with two other new Neoplecostomus species from the upper Rio Paraná basin of southeastern Brazil. The type locality is the Rio Paraitinguinha, a tributary of the Rio Tietê, within the municipality of Salesópolis, São Paulo state, Brazil. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Neoplecostomus bandeirante Roxo, Oliveira & Zawadzki, 2012 as a valid species.
Neoplecostomus is a genus of small armoured loricariids endemic to Atlantic-slope river systems of southeastern Brazil, spanning the states of Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Minas Gerais. Molecular and morphological phylogenetic analyses position Neoplecostomus within the subfamily Neoplecostominae (the site facet for this species uses the literature subfamily designation; FishBase lists Hypoptopomatinae per Ferraris 2003). The genus comprises roughly a dozen valid species, most with restricted ranges tied to individual river drainages or small tributary systems — a pattern reflecting the fragmented biogeographic history of Atlantic Forest headwater streams.
The species epithet bandeirante honours the bandeirantes, the Portuguese and mestizo explorers and slavers of the 16th through 18th centuries who undertook bandeiras — extended expeditions deep into the unmapped Brazilian interior — setting out predominantly from the São Paulo highlands and using the Rio Tietê as their principal westward highway. The Rio Paraitinguinha, rising in the Serra do Mar escarpment near Salesópolis (the uppermost Tietê), lies at the symbolic headwaters of that historic route.

Morphology
Neoplecostomus bandeirante reaches approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL) — notably large for the genus, where most species are smaller. The body follows the typical neoplecostomine loricariid form: strongly flattened ventrally, fully armoured with bony scutes arranged in lateral and mid-ventral series, and equipped with a ventral sucker mouth adapted for substrate adherence in fast current.
The published description distinguishes N. bandeirante from its congeners by the configuration of the lateral plate keels: the species bears moderate, consistently developed keels along the lateral plate series. Additionally, the first plates in the mid-ventral series are characteristically smaller in length relative to the surrounding plate area — a feature cited in the original description as diagnostic. FishBase notes that males exhibit more pronounced keels and swollen integument — suggesting that plate keel expression is sexually dimorphic or age-variable.
General coloration in the genus is cryptic: dark to medium brown dorsally, paler ventrally, patterned to match algae-covered cobble and basalt substrates. No live coloration data have been published specifically for N. bandeirante.
Habitat
The type locality — Rio Paraitinguinha, Salesópolis municipality — sits within the Serra do Mar escarpment zone of eastern São Paulo state, at the headwaters of the Rio Tietê drainage. This region lies at the southeastern margin of the upper Paraná basin, where streams descend steeply from the Atlantic Forest-clad escarpment onto the interior plateau.
Headwater streams of the upper Tietê and its tributaries in this part of São Paulo are characteristically clear, fast-flowing, rocky, and seasonally variable in discharge. The Atlantic Forest of the Serra do Mar provides dense riparian cover in the upper catchment, modulating temperature and contributing leaf litter and coarse wood to the stream channel. Neoplecostomus species are generally considered rheophilic benthic specialists — dependent on rocky substrates with strong current and high dissolved oxygen.
The IUCN assessed N. bandeirante as Least Concern in 2022, noting conditions stable enough in the upper Paraitinguinha headwaters at the time of evaluation. The Serra do Mar escarpment zone retains relatively high forest cover compared to the broader São Paulo interior, which has been extensively cleared for agriculture and urbanisation. No specific physicochemical field measurements are published for the type locality of this species.
Feeding
Neoplecostomus bandeirante is inferred to be an epilithic biofilm grazer and periphyton scraper consistent with the ecology and oral morphology of the genus. The ventral sucker mouth, fleshy papillose lips, and rasping dentition of Neoplecostomus are adapted for processing the thin algal and diatom biofilm that accumulates on smooth cobble and bedrock in clear, fast highland streams.
No gut content data or dietary analyses have been published specifically for N. bandeirante. The broader Neoplecostominae are benthic grazers with digestive systems adapted to processing hard substrate epilithic material; some detritivory and incidental invertebrate consumption is likely but unquantified for this species.
Mating
Mating behaviour in Neoplecostomus bandeirante is entirely undocumented. The species has not been kept in aquaria or studied in the field beyond the original taxonomic description. FishBase notes that males have more pronounced lateral plate keels and swollen integument — these secondary sexual characters suggest that males signal condition and compete for female attention or spawning territories via visual and tactile cues, as in other armoured catfish genera.
Suitable spawning microhabitats in the Rio Paraitinguinha — sheltered rock faces, undersides of flat stones, root crevices in fast current — are likely the focal points of male territorial behaviour during the reproductive season.
Breeding
No breeding observations exist for Neoplecostomus bandeirante in captivity or in the field. The reproductive biology of the species is entirely unknown beyond the inference that, like other loricariids of comparable ecology and body size, it likely deposits adhesive eggs on a hard substrate within a sheltered cavity, with some form of parental egg guarding.
Neoplecostomus species broadly are not established in the ornamental hobby, and no captive propagation data for the genus have been published in accessible aquaristic literature. The restricted headwater distribution of N. bandeirante means collection opportunities are limited and the species would require export permits under Brazilian biodiversity law (IBAMA/ICMBIO) for any research collection.

The species' ecological profile — a small-to-moderate-sized, fast-water, rocky-substrate benthic loricariid from a clear, cool, well-oxygenated Atlantic Forest headwater stream — suggests that any aquarium maintenance would require high dissolved oxygen, vigorous water circulation, a rocky substrate base, and clean water. The complete absence of captive experience means no specific parameters, feeding responses, or compatibility notes can be honestly documented for this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Neoplecostomus bandeirante as Least Concern (LC) in May 2022. The assessment notes stable conditions in the Rio Paraitinguinha headwater system, where the upper Tietê catchment retains significant Atlantic Forest cover along the Serra do Mar escarpment. The Salesópolis area includes portions of the Serra do Mar State Park system, which offers some degree of watershed protection.
Despite the LC rating, the species is known from a single river — an inherently precarious biogeographic situation. The broader Rio Tietê has been one of the most heavily polluted rivers in South America through much of the 20th century, largely as a result of São Paulo city's industrial and domestic effluent. While pollution abatement has improved the main stem, the headwater tributaries in the Serra do Mar remain vulnerable to infrastructure development and land-cover change as the São Paulo metropolitan region expands eastward. A phylogenetic study of Neoplecostominae (PMC3492771) underscores the high endemism and biogeographic fragility of Atlantic slope Neoplecostomus species generally: each species tracks a small watershed, and inter-drainage dispersal is not possible for these resident specialists. The current LC assessment should be revisited if surveys document contraction of the species' already narrow range.
