Oxyropsis carinata was described by Franz Steindachner in 1879 and is recognised as a valid species by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), where it is listed within the family Loricariidae, subfamily Hypoptopomatinae. The original combination is retained under the genus Oxyropsis, with the author and date conventionally cited in parentheses to reflect a subsequent generic placement.
The subfamily Hypoptopomatinae comprises the small, often miniature suckermouth catfishes of South America, and Oxyropsis was treated in Scott Schaefer's 2003 checklist of the group (CLOFFSCA). Within this assemblage the genus is distinguished by characters of the body armour and head shape rather than by the wood-eating dentition seen in the Hypostominae.
