One of the twig catfishes that first kindled European interest in Farlowella as aquarium subjects, Farlowella schreitmuelleri arrived in Germany in the 1930s and has maintained a quiet presence in specialist collections ever since. Its needle-thin silhouette and unhurried biofilm-grazing habits make it a study in camouflage and calm — a species that rewards patient observation far more than casual glancing.

Taxonomy & naming

Farlowella schreitmuelleri was described by J.P. Arnold in 1936, published in the German aquarium annual Taschenkalender für Aquarien- und Terrarienfreunde, making Arnold the valid authority with 1936 priority. A subsequent description by Ahl in 1937 is a junior synonym. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Farlowella schreitmuelleri Arnold, 1936 as the valid name. An additional synonym, Farlowella latisoma Miranda-Ribeiro, 1939, was formally placed in synonymy following the genus-wide revision by Retzer and Page (1997).

The genus Farlowella Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889 belongs to the subfamily Loricariinae within the armoured catfish family Loricariidae. Loricariinae is characterised by a greatly depressed body, reduced or absent adipose fin, and the extremely elongate rostrum that gives twig catfishes their common name. Farlowella is distinguished within the subfamily by a combination of a very long, slender snout, a series of lateral plates running the length of the body, and the absence of teeth on the premaxillary. The genus currently contains around 25–30 species, distributed across tropical South America.

The species epithet schreitmuelleri honours Wilhelm Schreitmüller (1870–1945), a German aquarist and natural-history illustrator who supplied the holotype specimens to Arnold. Schreitmüller was a prolific contributor to the German aquarium press and an active importer of tropical fish in the early twentieth century.

Morphology

Farlowella schreitmuelleri reaches approximately 7 in standard length (SL) — near the upper end of the genus. The body form is quintessentially twiglike: a rigid, stick-shaped profile produced by a very elongate rostrum (snout), a narrow torpedo-shaped body encased in keeled bony plates, and a gradually tapering caudal peduncle. The overall impression, particularly when the fish is motionless against a woody substrate, is remarkably close to a submerged twig or root fragment.

Colouration is typically pale tan to mid-brown, often with two faint longitudinal dark stripes running from the snout tip to the caudal fin base — one along the mid-lateral row of plates, one below it. The belly is pale and unarmoured. Fin membranes are translucent. Individual variation occurs, and intensity of striping can shift with substrate colour and mood.

The rostrum is long and depressed, tipped with a small inferior mouth bearing fine brush-like teeth suited to scraping biofilm from smooth surfaces. The pectoral fins are large relative to the body and are used to anchor the fish on flat surfaces. Sexual dimorphism in this genus is expressed through differences in the snout: adult males typically develop small odontodes (dermal denticles) on the sides of the snout and, in breeding condition, along the pectoral spine. Females tend to be plumper through the abdomen when gravid.

Habitat

Farlowella schreitmuelleri is recorded from the lower Amazon River basin of Brazil. In this region the fish inhabits slow to moderately flowing lowland rivers, flooded várzea forest margins, and quiet backwaters where submerged wood, roots, and aquatic macrophytes provide both feeding surfaces and cover from predation.

Lower Amazon waters at the altitudes and latitudes occupied by this species are typically warm (75–84 °F), soft to moderately mineralised, and mildly acidic to neutral in pH, consistent with the broad blackwater and clearwater character of Amazon tributaries away from whitewater plumes. Specific water-chemistry data for this species are not available in the published literature, but the lower Amazon lowland environment provides a reasonable envelope. The fish is strongly microhabitat-selective, remaining tightly associated with submerged vegetation, woody debris, and root mats rather than open sandy or gravel substrate.

Feeding

Like all Farlowella, F. schreitmuelleri is a biofilm grazer and aufwuchs feeder. The fine brush-like teeth of the inferior mouth are well suited to rasping the thin layer of algae, bacteria, fungal hyphae, diatoms, and fine detritus — collectively termed biofilm or periphyton — that coats submerged plant stems, wood surfaces, and smooth rocks. The fish moves slowly and methodically across these surfaces, rasping with small rhythmic movements.

In the aquarium, F. schreitmuelleri should be supplied with biofilm-rich surfaces: aged driftwood, smooth rocks with established algae films, broad-leaved plants such as Echinodorus or Anubias, and the walls of a mature tank with visible algal growth. Supplementary foods that sit flat and dissolve slowly are accepted — algae wafers placed directly on a flat surface, blanched courgette (zucchini), spinach leaves, and spirulina-based wafers. The fish is a slow and meticulous feeder; it should not be kept with fast, competitive feeders that will consume supplemental food before Farlowella can access it.

Mating

Courtship in Farlowella species — documented in the more frequently bred F. acus and closely related twig catfishes — involves the male closely following a receptive female along surfaces, maintaining contact with his snout near her flanks. Males in breeding condition display more prominent snout odontodes and may be observed pursuing females persistently for extended periods.

Males are loosely territorial around preferred spawning sites, typically broad flat surfaces such as the glass walls of the aquarium, large smooth leaves, or flat pieces of wood. Interspecific competition for these surfaces is low given the peaceful nature of Farlowella, but congeners or similar species sharing flat-surface territories may cause interference. Conditioning is best achieved through a varied diet, clean water, and a slight drop in water temperature or increase in water-change frequency to mimic seasonal cues.

Breeding

Farlowella schreitmuelleri, like other members of the genus, is believed to practice paternal brood care following the Farlowella pattern well documented in captivity for related species. The male selects a flat, clean surface — aquarium glass, a broad leaf, a smooth flat stone — and after spawning guards and tends the adhesive egg mass. He fans the eggs regularly with his pectoral fins to maintain oxygenation and removes infertile or fungused eggs.

Egg clutches in the genus typically number several dozen eggs, laid in a compact cluster. Incubation at warm temperatures (around 79–82 °F) takes approximately one week, after which fry emerge already able to cling to surfaces using the sucker mouth. The fry are miniature replicas of the adults and begin grazing biofilm almost immediately. No documented breeding accounts specific to F. schreitmuelleri are present in the available literature, but the biology of the genus is sufficiently consistent that the above pattern is the most likely scenario. Detailed records remain sparse.

In the aquarium

Farlowella schreitmuelleri is a delicate species demanding careful attention to water quality and tank design. The elongate body, while elegant, is fragile — the rostrum and caudal peduncle are vulnerable to damage in cramped conditions or aggressive tankmates. A 20–25 US gal tank is a reasonable minimum for a pair, longer rather than taller in footprint to allow the fish to move horizontally.

Water should be clean, warm (75–82 °F), soft to moderately hard, and neutral to slightly acidic (pH 6.5–7.4). Dissolved oxygen is important; Farlowella is susceptible to low oxygen levels. Gentle filtration with good surface movement but without strong turbulent currents is ideal. Nitrates should be kept low through regular partial water changes — the fish does not tolerate deteriorating water conditions well.

Tank decoration should mimic the fish's natural microhabitat: driftwood, smooth flat-surfaced stones, broad-leaved plants, and areas of established algal growth on the glass. Farlowella spend most of their time motionless on these surfaces; a bare, sterile tank will stress them. The species is entirely peaceful and must not be housed with boisterous, nippy, or fast-moving fish. Small, calm tetras, Corydoras, and similar peaceful community fish are suitable companions.

Availability in the hobby is intermittent; the species is not frequently bred in captivity, and specimens are usually wild-caught imports. Newly imported specimens can be delicate and require a stable, mature tank for acclimatisation.

Conservation

Farlowella schreitmuelleri is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 7 November 2018). Its distribution across the lower Amazon basin of Brazil encompasses a large area with no evidence of significant range-wide population decline. The lower Amazon, while not exempt from deforestation and sedimentation pressures affecting river systems throughout the Amazon basin, remains one of the largest and most biodiverse freshwater systems on Earth, providing extensive habitat for lowland loricariids.

At present no specific conservation concerns have been identified for this species, though all twig catfishes share a biological vulnerability to habitat disturbance given their dependence on biofilm-rich submerged surfaces and clean, well-oxygenated water. Removal of riparian vegetation that shades and structures the shallow habitats used by Farlowella could affect local populations. The species is occasionally collected for the ornamental trade but is not a high-volume commercial species.
