Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhaphis cameroni was first described by Franz Steindachner in 1907 in the Anzeiger der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Wien (volume 44, number 6: 82 & 475), under the original combination Psilichthys cameroni, based on material from the Rio Cubatão at Theresiópolis — a locality now corresponding to the city of Gaspar in Santa Catarina state, Brazil. The lectotype (ZSM 4837) was designated by Pereira and Reis in 2002, with paralectotypes held at MNHN, NMW, and SMF.
An alternative spelling, 'calmoni', appeared in a subsequent Steindachner paper of 1908 but is treated as a rejected emendation; the valid epithet is cameroni. The species was later transferred to Hemipsilichthys and ultimately to the genus Pareiorhaphis Miranda Ribeiro, 1918, where it now rests under the valid name Pareiorhaphis cameroni (Steindachner, 1907), as confirmed by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
Pareiorhaphis belongs to the subfamily Neoplecostominae, a clade of predominantly Atlantic-slope armoured catfishes characterised by their rheophilic habits and bony ventral plates that assist attachment to rocky substrates in fast water. The genus comprises 26 valid species, all endemic to Brazil, with the greatest species richness in the Doce River basin and the coastal rivers of Santa Catarina state — making P. cameroni one of the defining members of a distinctively southern Brazilian radiation.
Morphology
Pareiorhaphis cameroni reaches approximately 6.5 in total length, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. The body form is strongly adapted for life in fast water: dorsoventrally depressed, with a broad head and a flat ventral surface armoured with bony plates that allow the fish to press against rocks in strong current without being displaced.
The genus name references the diagnostic feature of the group: pareia (cheek or jaw) and rhaphis (needle), alluding to the elongated, needle-like interopercular odontodes that develop on the cheeks of breeding males. In nuptial condition, males also develop hypertrophied odontodes on the pectoral-fin spines — thickened, straight, and densely ornamented structures that are among the more striking secondary sex characters in the Neoplecostominae. Females and non-breeding males have much-reduced or absent interopercular odontodes.
Coloration in the genus is typically cryptic — a pale brown to dark grey ground with darker spotting or mottling that provides camouflage against rocky stream beds. Specific pattern descriptions for P. cameroni are not available in accessible sources.
Habitat
Pareiorhaphis cameroni is restricted to the coastal river drainages of Santa Catarina state: the Cubatão, Tubarão, and Araranguá rivers and the smaller coastal streams flowing directly to the Atlantic in the same state. These are short, steep rivers descending quickly from the Serra Geral and Serra do Mar escarpments to the coastal plain, generating fast, turbulent water over rocky beds — precisely the habitat occupied by rheophilic neoplecostomine loricariids.
The range is entirely within Santa Catarina state and represents one of the more geographically restricted distributions within Pareiorhaphis, a genus already notable for its endemic, drainage-by-drainage pattern of speciation along Brazil's Atlantic slope. No water chemistry data specific to the Cubatão type locality are recorded in available sources; the streams of the Serra Geral slope in this region are characteristically cool, clear, soft, and well-oxygenated, draining granitic and basaltic substrates.
Feeding
Pareiorhaphis cameroni feeds primarily by scraping algae and detritus from rocky stream surfaces — the standard feeding mode for Neoplecostominae occupying fast-water habitats. The flat ventral surface and subterminal mouth with fine teeth are suited to close contact with the substrate in current. In these conditions, the fish grazes biofilm, diatoms, and attached algae from exposed rock faces.
No specific diet data exist for P. cameroni from the field or captivity. Genus-level sources describe Pareiorhaphis as algae-scrapers and detritivores. By analogy with other neoplecostomine loricariids maintained in aquaria, acceptance of algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and sinking pellets is probable, though the species has no significant aquarium presence from which to draw conclusions.
Mating
The conspicuous sexual dimorphism in Pareiorhaphis — with males developing elaborate interopercular odontodes and hypertrophied pectoral-spine ornaments during the breeding season — points to a system of male–male competition and female choice mediated by these structures. In related neoplecostomine genera, males occupy and defend rocky crevices or areas of stable substrate in fast water, displaying their odontode development to rivals and prospective mates.
No courtship observations specific to P. cameroni are recorded. The pattern inferred from genus-level biology is that males in breeding condition patrol rocky stream sections, and that the elaborate pectoral and cheek odontodes function in both male rivalry and mate assessment. Seasonal hydrological cues — changes in water temperature and flow as Atlantic slope streams respond to rainfall — likely drive the reproductive cycle, but specific timing data for P. cameroni are not available.
Breeding
No captive breeding records or detailed field reproductive data exist for Pareiorhaphis cameroni. The species has not been maintained in aquaria in any documented number, and its breeding biology is unknown beyond the inference that, as a loricariid, it likely deposits adhesive eggs in sheltered rocky crevices with some form of parental attendance, as documented for other members of the family.
The biology of the group is data-sparse in this respect, and asserting clutch size, incubation period, or parental-care details for P. cameroni in the absence of records would be fabrication. Future field work on the Cubatão River or Santa Catarina coastal drainages would be needed to document the reproductive ecology of this endemic species.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhaphis cameroni is not available in the ornamental trade and is not kept by hobbyists in any meaningful number. It has no established aquarium record. Any hypothetical husbandry would need to take into account the cool, fast-flowing, oxygen-rich conditions of the Santa Catarina coastal streams — likely cooler than tropical-standard aquarium temperatures, well below 77 °F, with strong current and rocky substrate.
The species is described here as part of the WaterAquaria encyclopedic coverage of Neoplecostominae. It is not a suitable candidate for general hobbyist acquisition and is not available through normal aquarium supply channels. Specimens encountered in research or specialist settings would require permits consistent with Brazilian biodiversity law governing the collection and transport of native freshwater fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhaphis cameroni as Near Threatened in November 2018. The Near Threatened listing reflects the species' highly restricted range — endemic to Santa Catarina state's coastal drainages — combined with ongoing habitat pressure from urban and agricultural expansion along Brazil's southern Atlantic coast.
Santa Catarina is one of southern Brazil's most economically developed states. The coastal river drainages occupied by P. cameroni are subject to riparian clearing, water abstraction, pollution from agricultural runoff and sewage, and the alteration of stream hydrology by impoundments and channelisation. These threats are real but have not yet reduced the population to the point of qualifying for a threatened category; however, the combination of a naturally small range and intensifying land use makes the species one to watch.
As a stream-specialist endemic with no capacity to recolonise from outside the region, P. cameroni is particularly vulnerable to localised extirpation. Conservation of intact riparian corridors along the Cubatão, Tubarão, and Araranguá rivers, and monitoring of population health in the Quaraí headwaters where the species' range touches the boundary of accessible habitat, would contribute meaningfully to securing the species' long-term status.
