Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhaphis garapia was formally described by Pereira, Lehmann A., Schvambach and Reis in 2015 in Zootaxa (volume 4034, number 3, pages 556–564). The holotype (MCP 48861, 2 in SL, male) was collected from Arroio Garapiá, upstream of the Garapiá waterfall at 1342 ft elevation, within the Rio Tramandaí coastal drainage of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Additional paratypes are deposited at AMNH, MCP, and MNRJ.
The genus Pareiorhaphis was resurrected by Pereira and Reis in 2002 to accommodate a group of small neoplecostomine loricariids from eastern Brazilian coastal drainages, previously scattered across genera such as Hemipsilichthys. Pareiorhaphis is characterised by the presence of odontodes on the pectoral-fin spine, a distinctive type of lateral sensory canal arrangement, and a suite of cranial and pectoral-girdle characters.
The species' identity among congeners rests on three diagnostic characters noted in the original description: the nuchal plate is covered by thick skin and not exposed; the posterior process of the cleithrum is narrow and elongate; and the last segment of the preopercular ramus of the latero-sensory canal is limited to a small ossified tubule rather than a full canal segment. These details separate P. garapia from sympatric P. nudulus and from other coastal Pareiorhaphis.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) accepts Pareiorhaphis garapia as the valid name for this taxon, with no junior synonyms recognised.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 2.5 in standard length — on the small end for the genus, and compact relative to most loricariids in the hobby. The body follows the classic neoplecostomine plan: dorsoventrally flattened, with the entire upper surface protected by keeled bony scutes and the ventral surface largely unplated and fleshy, consistent with a rheophilic, substrate-clinging lifestyle.
Field notes from the original description record males bearing short, slightly curved pectoral-fin spines that extend toward the pelvic-fin origin. This is a significant dimorphic character in Pareiorhaphis and is well-developed in breeding-condition males of the genus generally — the hypertrophied pectoral odontodes and recurved spines are used in male-male agonistic interactions and possibly mate attraction. Females and immature individuals lack this elaboration.
The mouth is ventral and adapted for strong adhesion to hard substrates in fast current; the lips are wide, fleshy, and papillose. Teeth are fine and bicuspid, suited to scraping periphyton and biofilm from rock surfaces. Coloration in life is not described in detail in the original description; related species in the genus are typically cryptically patterned in brown and tan to match their rocky, forested-stream substrate.
Habitat
The entire known range of P. garapia is the headwaters of Arroio Garapiá, a small coastal stream in Maquiné municipality, Rio Grande do Sul, specifically in the reach upstream of a 12-metre waterfall at approximately 29°30'05"S, 50°13'16"W and 1342 ft elevation. This natural barrier effectively isolates the headwater population from the lower drainage.
At the time of collection (12 October 2013), the water was crystal clear, shallow (depth up to 2 ft), and moderate in width (10–13 ft), with strong current over a basaltic substrate of rocks and pebbles. The stream ran through dense riparian Atlantic Forest. Measured conditions were pH 7.6 and water temperature 62 °F — markedly cool, consistent with a montane headwater habitat in the subtropical south of Brazil.
Sympatric species recorded at the same site include another congeneric loricariid (Pareiorhaphis nudulus), the pimelodid catfish Rhamdia sp., the loricariid Rineloricaria aequalicuspis, and an undetermined Astyanax characid. This assemblage is consistent with intact Atlantic Forest headwater stream communities, which are among the most threatened freshwater habitats in South America.
Feeding
No feeding studies have been conducted specifically on P. garapia. Based on its morphology — broad adhesive lips, fine bicuspid teeth, and rheophilic habitat — it is reasonable to infer that the species feeds primarily on periphyton (the algal and microbial biofilm that coats submerged rocks in well-lit, fast-flowing streams) and fine organic detritus trapped among pebbles. This feeding guild is typical of Neoplecostominae generally.
In a captive setting, analogous small neoplecostomine loricariids accept wafer-type algae foods, spirulina-enriched sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables. However, as P. garapia is not known to have been kept in aquaria, all husbandry inferences are extrapolated from the genus.
Mating
No direct observations of mating behaviour exist for this species. In Pareiorhaphis generally, the pronounced sexual dimorphism of the pectoral fin — large, recurved, odontode-covered spines in males — is assumed to function in male-male competition for nest sites or access to females, following the pattern documented in related neoplecostomine and loricariine genera.
The isolated, headwater nature of the Arroio Garapiá population implies that P. garapia operates within a restricted gene pool; population size and intraspecific density dynamics at the type locality are unknown.
Breeding
The breeding biology of P. garapia has not been described in the scientific literature, and the species has not been maintained in captivity to the knowledge of the published record. Given the general loricariid pattern for small rheophilic species, clutch deposition under rock shelters or in crevices, with some form of male-guarded parental care, would be the expected strategy — but this remains unconfirmed for this species specifically.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhaphis garapia is not known to be present in the ornamental fish trade. No hobbyist literature, import records, or forum accounts for this species have been located. Its restricted range (a single headwater stream in southern Brazil), small size, and likely sensitivity to the conditions of its high-elevation, cool, fast-flowing type locality make it both logistically difficult to collect and poorly suited to typical tropical aquarium conditions.
Aquarists with an interest in neoplecostomine loricariids from Atlantic Forest streams would find the broader genus better represented by more studied congeners. If specimens were ever to become available, the water conditions of the type locality — cool (around 61–64 °F), clear, well-oxygenated, moderately alkaline, fast-flowing — would serve as the appropriate baseline.
Conservation
Pareiorhaphis garapia has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List. Its confirmed distribution is limited to the headwaters of a single small stream (Arroio Garapiá) above a 12-metre waterfall — an extremely restricted range that would place it at inherent vulnerability to any localised disturbance.
The Atlantic Forest of Rio Grande do Sul is among the most fragmented biomes in Brazil, with less than 12% of original forest cover remaining across the broader Atlantic Forest domain. Headwater streams in this region are sensitive to forest clearance, cattle grazing at stream banks, sedimentation, and water abstraction. A 12-metre waterfall as the lower range limit of the species means that colonisation or recolonisation from downstream populations is effectively impossible. A formal IUCN assessment that accounts for range size and habitat fragmentation would likely find grounds for a threatened category, but no such assessment has been published as of the date of this article.
