Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhina carrancas was formally described by Fábio A. Bockmann and Alexandre C. Ribeiro in 2003, in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 14, number 3, pages 232, Figs. 1–3). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises this as the valid name with no junior synonyms. The species has never received a widely used common name in the trade.
The genus Pareiorhina belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, one of the major subfamilial groupings within Loricariidae. Hypoptopomatines are characterised by their small size, heavily plated bodies, and typically rheophilic habits in fast-flowing upland streams. Pareiorhina as a whole is a small South American genus of armoured suckermouth catfishes associated with the Paraná and Atlantic Forest drainages of southeastern Brazil.
The generic name combines the Greek pareia (jaw or cheek) and rhinos (nose), alluding to features of the snout and cheek armour. The specific epithet carrancas is a toponym, honouring Serra de Carrancas in southern Minas Gerais — the upland range in whose foothill streams the type series was collected.
Morphology
Adults of Pareiorhina carrancas reach approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL), placing this among the smallest members of the already compact Hypoptopomatinae. Like other loricariids, the body is encased in rows of interlocking bony scutes that provide protection against abrasion in fast-flowing rocky streams. The mouth is ventral, adapted for rasping aufwuchs and biofilm from hard substrates.
Detailed external morphology is documented in the original description by Bockmann & Ribeiro (2003); the species belongs to a clade of small, flattened loricariids suited to clinging to rocks in high-gradient streams. No published data on colour pattern in live specimens is available in the sources consulted, and aquarium observations are essentially absent from the literature.
Habitat
The type locality is Córrego Debaixo da Serra, an upper-course tributary of Córrego do Beijinho — itself a left-bank affluent of the Rio Grande above the Reservoir of Camargos, in the piedmont of Serra de Carrancas, Minas Gerais, Brazil (44°36'08.7"W, 21°26'39.7"S, elevation approximately 980–1,0 ft). The Rio Grande is a major right-bank tributary of the Paraná River; the species therefore belongs to the upper Paraná basin.
At these elevations, the streams of Serra de Carrancas are cool, clear, well-oxygenated, and fast-moving, with rocky or gravelly substrates typical of Atlantic Forest upland headwaters. No published water-chemistry measurements for the specific collection sites are available in the sources consulted. Rheophilic Hypoptopomatines generally favour high-oxygen, moderate-to-fast current conditions over rocky substrate at mild subtropical temperatures.
Known distribution is restricted to the upper Paraná basin in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The degree to which the species is more widespread within this drainage is not established in available sources.
Feeding
Pareiorhina carrancas, like other Hypoptopomatinae, is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. The ventral, disc-like mouth is adapted for rasping the thin layer of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine organic matter (periphyton) that coats submerged rocks in its native streams. This mode of feeding requires hard substrate surfaces and sustained current to maintain biofilm growth.
No published aquarium feeding observations exist for this species in the sources consulted. By analogy with well-studied congeners, a diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables would be appropriate for captive individuals, supplemented by biofilm growth on rocks and driftwood.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been reported for Pareiorhina carrancas in the wild or in captivity in the sources consulted. Loricariids in the Hypoptopomatinae broadly tend toward cave or crevice spawning with some degree of paternal care, but this has not been documented for this genus or species. The available record for P. carrancas is limited to the original taxonomic description.
Breeding
No breeding report exists for Pareiorhina carrancas in the aquarium or in the field literature available to this account. The species has not entered the ornamental trade in any meaningful numbers, so hobbyist breeding records do not exist. Loricariid reproductive biology for congeners and related Hypoptopomatines suggests that rheophilic species often require cooler, highly oxygenated, flowing water to condition and spawn — conditions that are challenging to replicate in a standard aquarium.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhina carrancas is essentially absent from the ornamental fish trade and has not been kept by hobbyists in any documented numbers. Its small size (under 2 in SL) would in principle make it suitable for a specialised nano or biotope aquarium designed to replicate Atlantic Forest upland conditions: cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water over rocky substrate, with strong filtration and regular water changes to keep nitrates low.
In the absence of aquarium experience records, specific parameter recommendations cannot be given with confidence beyond the general requirements of rheophilic Hypoptopomatinae. Anyone acquiring this species should prioritise water movement, oxygen saturation, and rock-surface biofilm above other considerations.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhina carrancas as Least Concern in 2018. The species is endemic to the upper Paraná basin in Minas Gerais, Brazil, and its known range is geographically restricted to the upland streams of Serra de Carrancas and adjacent areas.
The Atlantic Forest biome — within which these upland streams lie — is among the most threatened biomes on Earth, having lost over 85% of its original extent to agriculture, urbanisation, and infrastructure. Headwater stream habitats in the Minas Gerais uplands face ongoing pressure from deforestation, sedimentation, and water extraction. The current Least Concern assessment should be viewed in the context of these regional pressures, and continued monitoring of upland stream assemblages in this region is warranted.
