Taxonomy & naming
Pareiorhina brachyrhyncha was formally described by Cláudio César Chamon, Augusto Oderich Aranda, and Paulo Andreas Buckup in 2005, in Copeia (issue 3, page 551, Fig. 1). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises this as the valid name. FishBase assigns it the identifier 62516. No junior synonyms are recorded, and the species has not received a widely used common or trade name.
The genus Pareiorhina belongs to subfamily Hypoptopomatinae within the family Loricariidae. This subfamily encompasses a diverse assemblage of small, heavily armoured, rheophilic suckermouth catfishes distributed across South American upland drainages. Pareiorhina itself is a small genus endemic to southeastern Brazil, with species associated with the Paraná and coastal Atlantic Forest drainages.
The generic name combines the Greek pareia (cheek or jaw) and rhinos (nose). The specific epithet brachyrhyncha is compound Greek: brachys (short) and rhynchos (snout), directly describing the notably shorter snout that distinguishes this species from its congeners — a morphological character highlighted in the original diagnosis.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 1.5 in standard length (SL), consistent with the general compactness of Hypoptopomatinae. The body is encased in interlocking bony scutes in the loricariid manner, and the ventral mouth is adapted for clinging to and rasping hard substrates in fast-flowing water.
The species is distinguished from congeners within Pareiorhina principally by the reduction or absence of azygous (unpaired) plates in front of the nuchal plate, and by a lower total vertebral count (30 vertebrae) relative to related species — diagnostic characters established in the original description. As its epithet signals, the snout is noticeably shorter than in related Pareiorhina. FishBase records the type locality as the left bank of the Rio Paraíba do Sul, southeastern Brazil.
No detailed colour description from live specimens is available in the sources consulted, and aquarium records are absent.
Habitat
The type locality is the Vera Cruz farm (22°46'14.1"S, 45°26'42.5"W), Bairro Ribeirão Grande, municipality of Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo State, Brazil — a stony piedmont tributary within the Paraíba do Sul drainage. The species is additionally recorded from drainages in Rio de Janeiro State within the same Paraíba do Sul system, and from Santa Catarina State rivers belonging to the Paranaguá drainage on the Atlantic coast.
This distribution is characteristic of Atlantic Forest upland streams: cool, clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing headwaters with rocky or gravelly substrates and strong current. The Paraíba do Sul basin drains the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar mountain ranges through densely settled southeastern Brazil — a landscape that has suffered severe deforestation. No published water-chemistry parameters for the occupied sites are available in the sources consulted.
The range is geographically fragmented across at least two separate Atlantic coast drainage systems (Paraíba do Sul and Paranaguá), with the intervening coastal ridges acting as barriers between populations.
Feeding
Pareiorhina brachyrhyncha is, like other Hypoptopomatinae, an aufwuchs and periphyton grazer. The ventrally positioned suckermouth is suited to rasping biofilm — the thin community of algae, diatoms, bacteria, and fine organic matter — from submerged rock and gravel surfaces in flowing water. Maintained current and hard substrate are therefore prerequisites for natural feeding behaviour.
No aquarium feeding observations are available for this species in the sources consulted. General Hypoptopomatinae husbandry suggests algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, and blanched vegetables as appropriate captive diet, alongside natural biofilm development on inert décor.
Mating
No mating or courtship behaviour has been documented for Pareiorhina brachyrhyncha in the wild or in captivity in the sources consulted. The species has not entered the ornamental trade and aquarium observations are essentially non-existent. Reproductive behaviour can only be inferred from the general biology of related Hypoptopomatinae.
Breeding
No breeding report exists for Pareiorhina brachyrhyncha in any available source. The species has not been propagated in captivity in any documented account. Loricariids in related Hypoptopomatine lineages are generally cave or crevice spawners with paternal brood care, but this has not been confirmed for Pareiorhina. The rheophilic habitat requirements of the species suggest that replicating suitable conditions — cool, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water — would be a prerequisite for any captive breeding attempt.
In the aquarium
Pareiorhina brachyrhyncha is not established in the ornamental fish trade and has not been documented in hobbyist collections in any meaningful way. Its small adult size (approximately 1.5 in SL) would in principle make it a candidate for a specialised nano biotope aquarium recreating cool Atlantic Forest piedmont stream conditions: strong water movement, high oxygen saturation, rocky substrate providing grazing surfaces, and stable cool temperatures.
Given its Near Threatened conservation status and restricted geographic range, collection of wild specimens for the trade would raise concern. Should tank-raised individuals ever become available, husbandry guidance would necessarily be extrapolated from the general Hypoptopomatinae literature rather than from species-specific experience.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pareiorhina brachyrhyncha as Near Threatened in 2018 — a significant distinction within its genus and within the broader Hypoptopomatinae, where most species have not been evaluated or are listed as Least Concern. The Near Threatened designation reflects the species' restricted distribution across highly degraded Atlantic Forest drainages of southeastern Brazil.
The Paraíba do Sul basin is one of the most heavily deforested and urbanised river systems in Brazil, crossing the densely populated São Paulo–Rio de Janeiro corridor. Sedimentation, urban runoff, domestic sewage discharge, and channel modification have degraded stream habitats substantially. The Paranaguá drainage population in Santa Catarina faces analogous pressures from agricultural expansion. The combination of a small range, habitat fragmentation, and ongoing land-use change places continued downward pressure on populations; a future uplisting to Vulnerable cannot be excluded if current trends continue.
