Taxonomy & naming
Pseudolithoxus nicoi was originally described by Armbruster and Provenzano in 2000 in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 11, number 3, pages 241–254, Fig. 4) under the combination Lasiancistrus nicoi, from type specimens collected at Río Manipitare, a tributary of the Río Siapa drainage, approximately 3–5 mi upstream from the confluence with the Río Siapa, Departamento Río Negro, Estado Amazonas, Venezuela. Armbruster (2004), in his broad phylogenetic revision of Loricariidae, transferred the species to the newly defined genus Pseudolithoxus, establishing the valid current combination. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pseudolithoxus nicoi (Armbruster & Provenzano, 2000), with Lasiancistrus nicoi as a synonym.
The genus name Pseudolithoxus combines the Greek pseudes (false), lithos (stone), and oxys (sharp) — loosely, 'false stone-sharp', evoking the rock-clinging lifestyle and distinguishing the genus from the superficially similar Lithoxus and Lasiancistrus. The species epithet nicoi is a patronym honouring Dr Leo G. Nico, an American ichthyologist and fish biologist. Distribution encompasses the upper Negro River basin, including the Canal Casiquiare drainage, in Venezuela. The Casiquiare canal, the natural bifurcation connecting the Orinoco and Amazon systems, is one of the most biogeographically significant river features in South America.
Morphology
Adults reach approximately 4.5 in standard length (SL). The body is strongly dorsoventrally flattened — an extreme rheophilic adaptation that reduces lift and drag in fast current and allows the fish to hug rock surfaces at high water velocities. The suctorial mouth, positioned on the underside of the flattened head, provides powerful adhesion to rock.
The colour pattern is striking: a charcoal-grey to black ground colour overlaid with white or pale spots distributed across the body. A white band is present in the caudal fin. Meristic counts include two dorsal spines and seven dorsal soft rays; lateral line plates number 23–25, and dorsal plates 6–7. The scutes on the dorsal surface are keeled, contributing to the textured appearance that is characteristic of rheophilic genera adapted to high-flow environments.
No specific dimorphism data have been published for P. nicoi. In related genera, males typically develop more pronounced odontodes during the breeding season, but this has not been documented for this species specifically.
Habitat
Pseudolithoxus nicoi inhabits the upper Rio Negro basin and Canal Casiquiare drainage in Estado Amazonas, Venezuela — one of the most distinctive blackwater environments on Earth. The Rio Negro and its tributaries carry highly acidic, tannin-stained water with very low conductivity, low mineral content, and characteristically low pH — conditions that arise from the decomposition of organic matter in the surrounding rainforest.
Within this setting, P. nicoi occupies rocky rapids and exposed rock faces where current is strong and dissolved oxygen is high despite the warm temperature. This rheophilic microhabitat is typical for Pseudolithoxus: the flattened body, suctorial mouth, and enlarged pectoral and pelvic fins are all adaptations for clinging to and manoeuvring across rock surfaces under fast water flow. The Casiquiare canal component of the range is ecologically significant — the canal links the Orinoco and Amazon systems, and species occurring there may be distributed across both drainage basins through this natural connection.
Feeding
Pseudolithoxus nicoi is a rheophilic biofilm scraper, using its suctorial mouth to rasp algae, diatoms, and associated fine organic material from exposed rock surfaces in fast-flowing blackwater. This feeding mode is consistent across the genus and with the morphology of the subterminal rasping mouth and the low, flat body posture that keeps the fish pressed against the substrate while feeding.
No gut-content studies specific to P. nicoi have been published. Given the blackwater Rio Negro environment — low nutrient availability, low algal productivity relative to whitewater rivers — the periphyton community on rock surfaces likely forms the primary food source, supplemented by fine detritus. In captivity, high-quality algae wafers and spirulina-based sinking foods are the appropriate dietary foundation, with rocky surfaces on which biofilm can develop naturally.
Mating
No mating behaviour has been documented for Pseudolithoxus nicoi in the published literature. The species is sparsely kept in captivity — PlanetCatfish recorded only four registered keepers at time of caching — and no reproductive observations have been reported. By analogy with the broader subfamily, males would be expected to defend rocky territory and court females at or near suitable spawning crevices. The extreme rheophilic habitat of the species suggests that in the wild, spawning takes place in rock crevices within or adjacent to fast-current zones.
Breeding
No confirmed breeding records for Pseudolithoxus nicoi exist in the aquarium hobby or published literature. Cave spawning with paternal brooding is the standard reproductive mode across Hypostominae, and P. nicoi is presumed to follow this pattern. The highly specialised habitat requirements of the species — fast flow, rocky substrate, very soft acidic water — make captive breeding challenging, and no accounts of successful spawning have been recorded. This species is not established in the breeding hobby.
In the aquarium
Pseudolithoxus nicoi is a specialist that reflects its extreme natural environment in every husbandry requirement. It is very rarely seen in the trade and carries no L-number. The four registered keepers on PlanetCatfish represent a minimal captive presence, and no husbandry write-ups are on record.
The most critical requirement is strong, well-oxygenated water flow. In nature this species clings to rock faces in fast rapids; a tank with powerful circulation — multiple powerheads or a circulation pump producing strong directional flow over a rocky hardscape — is essential. Still or slow-moving aquaria are unsuitable.
Water chemistry should reflect the blackwater Rio Negro origin: very soft (near-zero hardness), acidic (pH 5.0–6.5), warm (77–84 °F), and pristine. High conductivity, alkaline pH, or calcareous substrate are incompatible with this species' natural range. Bare rock, flat stones, and slate provide both cover and grazing surfaces. Standard planted-tank chemistry is not appropriate.
Given the rarity of this species and the absence of captive breeding success, any specimens encountered in the trade should be considered wild-caught and afforded careful quarantine and acclimatisation.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudolithoxus nicoi as Least Concern in August 2020, reflecting its occurrence across the upper Rio Negro basin and Canal Casiquiare in Venezuela without evidence of significant population decline at the time of assessment.
The upper Rio Negro and Casiquiare region remains relatively remote and less impacted by infrastructure development than many other Amazonian drainages, which contributes to the LC status. However, the species' dependence on clear rocky rapids means it is inherently vulnerable to any alteration of water chemistry, flow regime, or rock substrate — whether from hydroelectric development, mining, or catchment-level deforestation affecting the blackwater chemistry that defines its habitat. The Canal Casiquiare is increasingly subject to pressure from navigation improvements and regional development in Venezuela. Monitoring of rheophilic loricariid communities in this system remains limited.
