Jupiaba scologaster is a small, slender characid from the upper Negro and Orinoco river basins of South America, originally described as Astyanax scologaster before being transferred to the genus Jupiaba following Zanata's 1997 revision. Reaching no more than 1.5 in standard length, it is a modest fish by any measure — yet it occupies a noteworthy place in the taxonomy of South American tetras as one of the founding members of a genus defined largely by internal cranial features invisible to the eye. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, it persists in the blackwater and clearwater drainages of the Guiana Shield where it shares its small-tetra niche with dozens of close relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

Jupiaba scologaster was first described by Stanley H. Weitzman and Richard P. Vari in 1986, published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (volume 99, issue 4, pages 709–716), under the name Astyanax scologaster. The type locality is the Río Negro of Venezuela, placing the original specimen in the upper Negro drainage of the Orinoco system. The specific epithet scologaster is derived from Greek, combining skolos (thorn or pointed object) with gaster (belly), likely in reference to a morphological feature of the abdomen noted in the original description.

In 1997, Angela M. Zanata erected the genus Jupiaba to accommodate a group of small characids that share a suite of internal osteological characters — principally features of the cranial and pectoral girdle skeleton — that distinguish them from the catch-all genus Astyanax. Jupiaba scologaster was transferred into this new genus at that time, acquiring the parenthetical authority notation that reflects the change of genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Catalog of Fishes, CAS) records Jupiaba scologaster (Weitzman & Vari, 1986) as the valid name. The family assignment has also been revised: the species now sits within Acestrorhamphidae in some treatments, though the genus Jupiaba and its relatives have been placed in Characidae by various authorities; this profile follows the family designation Characidae per the submitted data.

Jupiaba is a medium-sized genus of small Neotropical characids ranging widely across Amazonian and Orinoco drainages. Species are generally difficult to identify without examination of internal skeletal features, and the group has been subject to ongoing taxonomic revision. J. scologaster is one of the earlier-described members of the genus and contributes to the definition of the clade through its type-series characters.

Morphology

Jupiaba scologaster is a small, slender characid with a maximum recorded standard length of 1.5 in, making it among the smaller members of its genus. Like most Jupiaba, it has the typical compressed-body outline of a small tetra: a moderately deep, laterally flattened body, large eyes relative to head size, and a small, terminal mouth suited to picking small invertebrates from the water column.

As with many small Neotropical characids, the external coloration in life is not elaborately described in the available literature — the species lacks the bold lateral stripe or vivid colour patches that attract hobbyist attention to related genera. Preserved specimens typically show the silvery flanks, dark dorsal surface, and the faint to moderate lateral body stripe common across small Astyanax-complex tetras. The diagnostic characters distinguishing J. scologaster within Jupiaba are primarily osteological: features of the cranial roof, the pectoral girdle, and associated skeletal elements described by Weitzman and Vari in the original description and assessed again by Zanata in the genus revision. Habitat

Breeding

Captive breeding of Jupiaba scologaster is not documented in the hobbyist or scientific literature reviewed. The species is rare in the aquarium trade, and no breeding reports have been located.

For closely related small Neotropical egg-scatterers, the general approach involves a separate conditioning and spawning tank with soft, acidic water replicating the blackwater origin (pH 5.5–6.5, very low hardness, temperature around 79–82 °F), fine-leaved plants or a mesh spawning grid to protect eggs from being eaten, and removal of adults once spawning is observed. Eggs in related species typically hatch within 24–48 hours at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later and accepting micro-foods immediately.

This framework is extrapolated from congeners and related genera rather than direct observation of J. scologaster. Aquarists who obtain this species should treat it as a small, potentially delicate blackwater tetra requiring precise soft-water conditions.

In the aquarium

Jupiaba scologaster is essentially absent from the mainstream aquarium hobby and is not regularly offered in the trade. It may occasionally appear as an incidental import among mixed wild-caught blackwater tetra shipments from Venezuela or Brazil, but is unlikely to be encountered outside specialist Neotropical fish circles.

For aquarists who do obtain it, the species would be treated as a small, delicate blackwater tetra: soft, acidic, tannin-stained water (pH 5.0–6.5, near-zero hardness, temperature 75–82 °F) in a densely planted or heavily botanicalled aquarium with dim lighting and a dark substrate. At 1.5 in maximum, it is well suited to a small aquarium of 10–15 US gal or more, kept in a group of at least six to eight to reduce individual stress. Tankmates should be chosen from similarly sized, soft-water species that will not compete aggressively for food.

Because data on this species in captivity are sparse, all husbandry notes above are inferred from the genus and from comparable small Guiana Shield tetras. Direct observations from aquarists maintaining J. scologaster would substantially improve on this profile.

Conservation

Jupiaba scologaster is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 2021. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across portions of the upper Negro and Orinoco basins — a broad geographic range by the standards of Neotropical fishes — and the absence of evidence of rapid population decline.

The upper Negro basin is one of the best-preserved large river systems in South America, much of it encompassed within indigenous territories and the protected areas of the Guiana Shield. Threats in the region include gold and mineral extraction, which introduces mercury contamination and sediment disturbance into blackwater systems, as well as the broader pressures of climate change on Amazonian hydrology. These are landscape-level threats affecting many species simultaneously rather than pressures specific to J. scologaster.

No targeted conservation actions for this species are recorded, nor are any needed given its current assessment. The IUCN listing provides baseline documentation of the species' status; continued monitoring of the upper Negro basin's water quality and habitat integrity remains the most relevant safeguard for the diverse small-fish community, including J. scologaster, that depends on its blackwater ecosystem.
