Pseudoqolus koko is a small, cryptic loricariid from the remote upper Maroni River basin of French Guiana and Suriname — known primarily to science rather than the hobby. What makes it remarkable is its diet: unlike the wood-eating Panaqolus plecos it was once grouped with, P. koko feeds on sponges, making it one of a very small number of spongiovorous freshwater fish documented anywhere on Earth.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudoqolus koko was formally described by Fisch-Muller and Covain in 2012, based on specimens collected from the Marouini River in the vicinity of Antecume Pata, a Wayana Amerindian settlement in the upper Maroni basin of French Guiana. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Pseudoqolus koko as the valid combination; it appears in FishBase under the same name, with an earlier placeholder listing as Panaqolus koko now treated as a synonym.

The genus Pseudoqolus was erected as part of a broader revision of the Panaqolus lineage. Armbruster and colleagues (2015) formally segregated Pseudoqolus from Panaqolus on the basis of gut-content analysis and molecular evidence: Panaqolus species are xylophages (wood-eaters), whereas Pseudoqolus species consume sponge tissue and spicules — a fundamentally different dietary guild. The genus name signals this relationship: Pseudo- (Greek, 'false') + Qolus (an altered form of the Panaqolus lineage name), meaning roughly 'the false Panaqolus'. Both genera remain within subfamily Hypostominae, tribe Ancistrini.

The species epithet koko is taken directly from the Wayana Amerindian name for this catfish — a respectful nod to the indigenous community in whose territory the type specimens were collected and who draw on this fish as a cultural and subsistence resource.

Morphology

Adults reach approximately 3.5 in standard length (SL), placing P. koko among the smaller loricariids. The body plan follows the typical Hypostominae template: a strongly flattened ventral profile, a domed dorsal surface armoured with overlapping bony scutes, a subterminal suctorial mouth, and a heterocercal caudal fin. Specific colour pattern details are not well documented in the available literature, but members of this lineage typically show muted brown or grey ground coloration with irregular darker markings that provide camouflage against rocky or woody substrate.

The dentition of Pseudoqolus is notably different from the spatulate (spoon-shaped) teeth of the sponge-feeding specialists in other families: the precise tooth morphology has not been described in accessible sources to date, though it presumably reflects adaptation to rasping sponge tissue from substrate. Internal gut morphology may also differ from wood-eating relatives, as cellulose digestion and sponge-spicule processing place very different demands on the digestive tract.

Sexual dimorphism has not been characterised in the literature for this species.

Habitat

Pseudoqolus koko is known from the upper Maroni River basin, which forms the border between French Guiana and Suriname. The type locality is the Marouini River, a tributary draining the remote Guiana Shield highlands near the Wayana territory — a region characterised by clear, soft, acidic blackwater and whitewater river systems flowing over ancient Precambrian bedrock.

The Guiana Shield rivers that drain this terrain are typically low in dissolved minerals, with soft to very soft water and pH values ranging from mildly acidic to neutral. Temperatures in these upland equatorial rivers remain warm year-round. The species shares its habitat with other loricariids documented at the same locality, including Hemiancistrus medians, Peckoltia otali, and Pseudancistrus barbatus — a community typical of rocky, cobble-strewn river reaches with submerged woody debris.

Specific water parameter data (temperature, pH, conductivity) for the type locality are not available in the current literature, but the broader upper Maroni system is consistent with tropical Guiana Shield conditions: warm (approximately 75–82 °F), soft (low conductivity), and mildly acidic.

Feeding

The most scientifically significant feature of Pseudoqolus koko is its diet. Gut-content analysis, which formed part of the evidence used to separate Pseudoqolus from Panaqolus, revealed sponge fragments and spicules as the primary stomach contents — placing P. koko among a tiny number of freshwater fish documented as spongiovores.

Freshwater sponges (family Spongillidae) are widespread in Neotropical rivers, encrusting submerged rocks, roots, and wood. Their tissues are defended by sharp siliceous spicules, which deter most would-be predators. That P. koko consumes them regularly implies either a degree of tolerance to spicule ingestion in the digestive tract, or some mechanism for processing or avoiding the spicules — a question that has not yet been investigated in detail.

In the aquarium, if P. koko were ever kept, it would likely require access to freshwater sponge growth, either cultivated or imported on live rock or wood. Standard loricariid foods — algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and driftwood — may provide supplementary nutrition but are unlikely to substitute fully for the spongiovore niche this species occupies.

Mating

No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Pseudoqolus koko, in the wild or in aquaria. The species is virtually absent from the ornamental trade and has not been bred in captivity to any published account.

By analogy with other small Hypostominae in related genera, a cave-spawning strategy with some degree of paternal guarding would be the expected reproductive mode — but this remains speculative for P. koko specifically. The remote and difficult-to-access nature of the type locality means in-situ behavioural observations are likewise absent from the literature.

Breeding

No breeding records exist for Pseudoqolus koko in either scientific literature or hobbyist sources. The species has not been established in the ornamental trade, and captive reproduction has not been reported.

Given the species' specialised diet — freshwater sponges — successful captive breeding would likely require not only replication of appropriate water conditions (soft, warm, acidic water consistent with Guiana Shield rivers) but also a reliable source of live freshwater sponge for conditioning and feeding. These constraints make P. koko one of the more challenging loricariids to contemplate keeping, let alone breeding, and it is unlikely to become a regular aquarium subject without further study of its dietary requirements.

In the aquarium

Pseudoqolus koko is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade. Its remote range in the upper Maroni basin — accessible primarily through Wayana territory with appropriate permits — means it is rarely if ever collected for the hobby. No care accounts or long-term maintenance reports exist in the accessible hobbyist literature.

For keepers who might encounter this species, the Guiana Shield origin suggests soft, slightly acidic, warm water would be appropriate, along with a well-oxygenated aquarium with rocky substrate and minimal current fluctuation. The overriding challenge is diet: without access to live freshwater sponge, it is unclear whether the fish could thrive on standard loricariid fare. This is not a species currently suited to routine aquarium keeping, and trade specimens, if they ever appear, would be wild-caught animals from an already Data Deficient population.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pseudoqolus koko as Data Deficient (DD) on 19 October 2020. This classification reflects not an absence of concern but an absence of information: the species is known from a limited number of collections in a remote area, population size and trends are entirely unknown, and the extent of its distribution beyond the type locality in the Marouini River has not been systematically surveyed.

Collection is logistically challenging: the upper Maroni basin lies within indigenous Wayana territory, and access requires community consent and appropriate research authorisations. The DD listing does not preclude the possibility that future assessment, once data are gathered, could reveal the species to be at genuine risk.

The broader upper Maroni system faces some pressure from small-scale gold mining (garimpagem), which introduces mercury contamination and sediment loading into Guiana Shield rivers. For a species with a specialised diet dependent on freshwater sponge availability — itself sensitive to water quality — chemical and physical degradation of the habitat could have outsized effects. Targeted surveys to establish the true range, abundance, and habitat associations of P. koko are a research priority.
