Taxonomy & naming
Peckoltia otali was formally described by Sonia Fisch-Muller and Raphaël Covain in 2012, in a monograph examining the diversity of Ancistrini from the Guianas: 'Diversity of the Ancistrini (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the Guianas: the Panaque group, a molecular appraisal with descriptions of new species.' The holotype is catalogued as MNHN 2011-0005 and was collected from Saut Tampoc on the Tampoc River — a tributary of the Lawa River within the Maroni drainage — at 3°19'27"N, 53°50'12"W, French Guiana. Paratypes are housed in the MHNG, MNHN, ZMA, and ANSP collections. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Peckoltia otali Fisch-Muller & Covain, 2012 as the valid combination.
The genus Peckoltia is placed within the tribe Ancistrini of subfamily Hypostominae, the largest loricariid subfamily. Peckoltia comprises small- to medium-sized plated catfishes distributed across northern South America, with several species known from the Guiana Shield drainages. The 2012 paper used both morphological comparisons and molecular data to establish P. otali as a distinct species within this complex; the species differs from closely related congeners in body depth (22.5–25.7% SL), body width (33.8–37.1% SL), and the precise arrangement and size of its dark spotting pattern.
No DATZ L-number or other aquarium trade code has been assigned to P. otali.
Morphology
Adults of Peckoltia otali reach a maximum recorded size of 3 in standard length (SL), placing it among the smaller members of its genus. Hobbyist sources note that trade specimens typically reach 3 in in adult size, occasionally approaching 4.5 in total length.
The dorsal fin carries two spines and seven soft rays; the anal fin bears five soft rays — fin-ray counts within the typical range for Peckoltia. The body is notably deeper (22.5–25.7% SL) and wider (33.8–37.1% SL) than related species, giving P. otali a stockier profile than its measurements alone suggest.
Coloration is the species' most ecologically significant characteristic: the base colour is golden-brown to pale olive-tan, overlaid with numerous blackish-brown spots of irregular size. These spots coalesce and align into transverse bands across the fins, breaking the outline of the body in moving water and dappled light. The Wayana-derived name (see Etymology) explicitly references this cryptic quality. Fins display corresponding dark banding or spotting.
Peckoltia otali shows no dimorphism documented in available sources. The interopercular odontodes (cheek spines) present in some loricariid genera as sexual characters are not reported as sexually differentiated in this species. Captive breeding has not been achieved and reported in reviewed sources, leaving dimorphism data limited.
Habitat
Peckoltia otali is known from the upper Maroni River basin in French Guiana and Suriname. The Maroni (also Marowijne) forms the border between the two territories and drains the central Guiana Shield — a geologically ancient, nutrient-poor landscape of hard granite and sandstone overlain by dense Amazonian rainforest. The Lawa River (upper Maroni) and its tributary the Tampoc, where the type series was collected, are classic Guiana Shield blackwater-to-clearwater rivers running over polished boulders and coarse gravel.
Field habitat at the type locality is characterised as rapids: sunny, shallow, swiftly flowing water with a medium-sized rock substrate. This is a high-energy, well-oxygenated environment — a stark contrast to the still-water or slow-river habitats of many aquarium plecos. Guiana Shield rapids are typically oligotrophic (nutrient-poor), acidic, and soft; ambient temperatures in lowland French Guiana typically range from approximately 77–82 °F year-round in such systems.
The species is recorded as a facultative air-breather, capable of supplementing gill respiration — a common adaptation among loricariids that inhabit shallow, potentially hypoxic environments during seasonal low-water periods.
Hobbyist sources additionally report the species in gold-brown coloured water, consistent with the tannin-stained, humic Guiana Shield drainage chemistry.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study has been conducted on Peckoltia otali in the wild. The ventral sucking mouth and fine rasping dentition characteristic of Peckoltia indicate a primary diet of biofilm — the community of algae, cyanobacteria, diatoms, bacteria, and fine detritus that colonises submerged rock surfaces in the rapids biotope. Periphyton on boulder surfaces in well-lit rapids is often dense and nutritious, providing a reliable food source in otherwise oligotrophic Guiana Shield systems.
Small benthic invertebrates — midge larvae, ostracods, and other meiofauna embedded in biofilm or sheltering in rock crevices — are likely consumed opportunistically, as recorded in other Peckoltia species.
In the aquarium, hobbyist sources report acceptance of algae wafers, sinking spirulina discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, cucumber), and detritus scraped from driftwood surfaces. The species is also noted to consume small live or frozen invertebrates, and occasional protein supplementation appears beneficial. Driftwood and smooth rocks in the aquarium encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Mating
No courtship or mating behaviour has been documented for Peckoltia otali in the scientific literature or in hobbyist accounts. Captive breeding has not been reported in any source reviewed.
Across the Peckoltia genus, reproductive biology is poorly characterised compared to the better-studied Ancistrus and Panaqolus. The general loricariid pattern — male cavity defence, female egg deposition, paternal brood care — is assumed but has not been confirmed for this species.
In rapids biotopes, suitable spawning cavities in P. otali's natural habitat would include crevices between boulders, undercut rock surfaces, and spaces beneath submerged rocks in fast-flowing sections of the Tampoc and upper Maroni. The fish's cryptic coloration is as relevant to predator avoidance during spawning as it is during routine foraging.
Breeding
Peckoltia otali has not been bred in captivity according to any source reviewed. Wild-caught imports from French Guiana are uncommon; the species is not established as a regular aquarium fish, and the absence of breeding records reflects its rarity in the hobby rather than any evidence of breeding difficulty under suitable conditions.
The genus Peckoltia is generally understood to follow loricariid cavity-spawning biology, with paternal brood guarding as the expectation based on related genera. Given that A. yanesha and related Ancistrus in overlapping or similar habitats are bred routinely, P. otali's rapids-adapted biology may prove compatible with captive reproduction if stable, oxygen-rich water conditions and appropriate cave structures are provided.
No clutch-size, incubation, or fry-development data are available for this species.
In the aquarium
Peckoltia otali reaches the hobby only through intermittent wild collection from French Guiana and is considered a rarity. Hobbyist sources confirm it is occasionally imported and can adapt to aquarium life once acclimated, but captive breeding has not been achieved and the fish remains a specialist item.
The species' origins in well-oxygenated Guiana Shield rapids mean that aquarium conditions should prioritise water movement and dissolved oxygen above most other parameters. A powerhead or multiple filter outlets creating a directional current, combined with surface agitation, will serve this fish better than still or gently filtered water. Minimum tank volume of approximately 30 US gal is recommended to allow adequate flow and territory.
Water parameters consistent with the Guiana Shield biotope: temperature 77–82 °F, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard and clean. Nitrate accumulation is poorly tolerated by many rapids-adapted loricariids; frequent partial water changes maintaining low nitrate are advisable. Low to moderate lighting reduces stress for a shy, nocturnal species, though natural habitat includes exposed sun-lit rapids during daylight.
Decoration should centre on smooth boulders and slate with crevices or overhangs providing daytime refuges, supplemented with driftwood. Peckoltia otali is described as shy and nocturnal but will become more visible once settled. It is peaceful toward other species; tankmates should be non-aggressive and tolerant of current.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Peckoltia otali as Vulnerable (VU) on 14 January 2021 — a designation indicating that the species faces a high risk of extinction in the wild if the conditions threatening its survival continue.
The Vulnerable assessment reflects the species' restricted and specialised distribution: it is known only from the upper Maroni basin (Lawa and Tampoc rivers) in French Guiana and adjacent Suriname. Within that range it occupies a specific microhabitat — sunlit, swiftly flowing boulder rapids — that is geographically limited and sensitive to disturbance. The Guiana Shield as a whole is among the least disturbed regions of tropical South America in terms of forest cover, which provides some buffer; however, the upper Maroni basin has been subject to significant illegal gold mining (orpaillage) for decades. Artisanal and semi-industrial mercury-based gold extraction causes severe sedimentation, direct mercury contamination of aquatic food webs, and physical destruction of the boulder substrate on which P. otali depends.
French Guiana's legal and regulatory framework has struggled to control illegal mining in the interior, and populations of the Wayana Amerindians living along the upper Maroni — the people for whom the species' name is indirectly connected through the Wayana-language etymology — have documented severe mercury exposure via fish consumption. The same contamination event that affects human communities also affects the rapids-dwelling fish fauna, including P. otali.
No captive population of P. otali is known to exist at breeding scale. The species' IUCN Vulnerable status and its dependence on a biotope under active threat from mining make it one of the more conservation-significant plecos described from the Guiana Shield.
